Yay! WHO coming to Australia after all!

http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common ... 02,00.html

Thankfully, it is the ABC that will be screening it. They currently screen the old series daily. The great thing about the ABC is that they will give it a decent timeslot, and they have no ad breaks. If one of the networks got hold of it, it would be on at midnight and hacked to bit, and periodically pushed aside for the cricket.

Complete season boxset, with extras! (And packaging pictures!)
http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=ti ... g=72&pa=sr

Image
Image

It appears to be six discs. (Plain releases will cover 4 discs, so hopefully we will get six hours of extras or more, plus the commentaries, as they are suggesting a retail price of £70! (about $130!) :o

Also:
Doctor Who continues to dominate Saturday nights.

The figures are in for The End of the World - and are looking good. Doctor Who had an average rating of 7.3m and a peak of 7.9m viewers, against 6m for Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway on ITV1.

"The viewing figures were down overall because of the great weather, but we were incredibly pleased that viewers were continuing to enjoy the series," BBC Publicity told us.

Doctor Who was the highest rated show of the evening, so it proved that the Time Lord was still the master of Saturday nights.

the only thing I don't like is that it's called "The complete first series", its hardly the first doctor who series is it? You can say that it's the NEW doctor who series but its not really all that new is it? The show is particully identitcal to the old one expect we don't get longer running stories each series.

Funny, I don't recognize any of these names. Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon, John Entwistle...........now THAT IS THE WHO!!!!

Ooooppppssss, your talking about a different WHO. Well the only one that deserves a capital WHO is THE WHO. They rock. They can't even keep the same doctor in the Doctor ??? series. What is up with that?

Watch your use of THE WHO...........there are those of us who don't know who the other WHO is.

LOL................................LOL.......................LOL......................LOL

Well, that is true for long time fans, but when a show hasn't been on the air on a regular basis for over 16 years, it really doesn't make much sense just picking up and calling it Season 27 after such a long gap. A whole new generation of potential fans has grown up in that time, and would be confused as all hell if "Doctor Who - The Complete Season 27" appeared on shelves, especially when the complete seasons 1 through 26 aren't, and will never be, available.

If the criteria for calling something new was that the basic concept hadn't been seen before, then no show would ever be able to use that phrase. Once again, from a marketing POV it helps to separate it from the original series.

I mean, Star Trek: The Next Generation was pretty much the same show as the original, but they didn't called that Almost New Star Trek: Season 4!

I know what your saying Loomis but I would have just had them have a title for the series like the way the other DVD's are released. I know these are 13 indiviual (kind of) episodes instead of a big long story like the old series did but there must be something they could call it.

Well, it appears that there is a thread throughout the season relating to a galactic war in which Gallifrey was destroyed (Odds are on by the Daleks). Notice how the war was referenced in the Auton episode (The Doctor told the Nestene consciousness he couldn't stop it) and how Jabe knew about Gallifrey's destruction in a war in last weeks episode. Also, The Moxx of Baldoon (I think that was his name) in the same episode said something to the Doctor about "The Bad Wolf Scenario" and I've seen pictures of the TARDIS with "Bad Wolf" written on the side in graffiti (presumably to be used in a future story). So it would appear, like Babylon 5, this series will have an overall arc.

Yes, I guess that will be the overarching thread, and I am intrigued.

I watched the second episode last night, and I really enjoyed it. Although, I was a little conflicted over the Doctor's actions - or lack there of - at the end of the episode. For those who have seen it, would the Doctor really let that happen to someone, especially given his efforts to save even more vain elements of humanity in the past?

Episode 3 looks really good - my favourite kind of WHO: set in the 1860s :)

As for the name of the season, I really can't see what else they could have called it. I think this is pretty much being prepped for a BIG international release - hence the 45 minute x 13 run time rather than 6 half-hour parts per episode - and as a result, they really want to emphasise that this is NEW, the first of the new, and can we watched by anyone regardless of whether they have watched the show before.

Here's the RealMedia trailer for Saturday's upcoming episode: The Aliens of London. It's a 2 parter, so the famous Who cliffhanger will return!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/ram ... 6x9_bb.ram

Notice the "Bad Wolf" sprayed on the TARDIS side? And The Big Bad Wolf was mentioned in last week's The Unquiet Dead (as was the great War once again).

To keep this on topic, it appears the series boxset will be five discs only. Sites are reporting a fifth disc full of extras. However, I guess the other 4 discs will have to be re-authored in order to add the commentaries. Hopefully a few story specific extras will be added to each too (especially if they remain an average of 3 rather than 4 episodes a disc).

Mr. Toad, first your avatar is awesome, congrats. And then thank you for recognizing The Who as a great group. There are tons of DVD's out there of The Who in concert. The latest if "The Who Live in Boston", and it is an awesome concert. It is available now. There is another The Who coming in June that is their big concert in England last summer. Look for "The Who Live at Royal Albert Hall" featuring Pete and the boys and their special guests including Eddie Vedder, from Pearl Jam, and many others. "The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus" features the only live recording of "A Quick One While He's Away". The Woodstock DVD features among others - The Who.

Feel free to PM me about the availbility of The Who on DVD. I would be happy to chat with you.

I haven't seen him in much - let alone playing the Doctor before - so what makes him such a bad choice?

Well, most complaints seem to be he's too young. But he's actually older than he looks. And people said the same about Davison when he was the Doctor, and he quickly became my second favourite Doctor (after the late great Patrick Troughton).

Davison, when done "right" - an old person trapped in a young body - was fantastic.

I have high-hopes for Tennant, but I must admit, I haven't seen him in anything before. But hey, he's in the next Harry Potter film!

Now to keep this on-topic once again:

The latest Ultimate DVD has a massive Doctor Who section. It reviews the first of the barebones releases (and of course gives it 5/5 for entertainment) and it mentions a few things about the mega-boxset (but sadly nothing we don't already know). It confirms commentaries will be added, so the episode discs will have to be altered from the plain versions, so I'm hopeful for more extras to be slipped on each.

It also exclusively reveals a "Classic Who" boxset for January 2006! "Doctor Who: The Beginning" which will contain the first 3 stories:

* An Unearthly Child/100,000BC
* The Mutants/The Daleks
* Inside The Spaceship/The Edge of Destruction.

(I've used both official story titles for each story as its not clear which BBC Video will use at this point). All will be fully restored by The Doctor Who restoration team link and the set loaded with supplements.

At the very least, let us hope they've signed Tenant to a longer contract than they did with Eccleston.

The chance to view those first three stories on DVD sounds awesome. I have seen "Unearthly Child" but in a dodgy quality copy. The Restoration Team has done excellent work so far, and I expect that we won't be disappointed this time out.

I also look forward to the "New" boxset, but hope there is a local release. As cool as the TARDIS set looks, I don't know if it will survive the trip across the seas to my little Antipodean island.

Why doesn't the BBC sign these guys up for longer contracts? One year is rather short for the new Doctor, I think. Are they counting the American Doctor Who as an official life for the good Doctor? If so, they are going to run out of lives pretty quickly.

The new guy looks very young in that picture, hopefully he's good in the role.

I just got a magazine this weekend called SFX and the entire issue is devoted to Doctor Who and it comes with a bonus CD of exerpts from the various Dr. Who dramas available on CD. Pretty cool stuff.

Well, there's all sorts of theories that Eccleston was always only going to do one year, and the BBC accepted wanting a big "name" to relaunch the series. But that's probably all they are, theories.

I'm sure the BBC will have learnt from the Eccleston affair if it wasn't pre-agreed and made suitable changes to Tennant's contract.

As for his age, it really doesn't bother me. I'm not sure Tennant is the best for the role, but we all have our own ideas. It does bother me slightly that the role only seems to be going to Russel T Davies' "mates" who have worked with the writer on previous productions. But the age doesn't bother me. Like I say, Davison quickly became my second favourite Doctor and he was about the same age when he took the role. (And look at him in Castrovalva or Frontios, where the scripts and acting emphasis his age in contrast to his body's apperence.)

I'm slightly bummed that Eccleston is leaving, but he's not quite "there" for me. If I see him fold his arms and exclaim "Fantastic!" again while grinning like a cheshire cat, I may scream. I know what they are trying to do with his Doctor - give him a genuine love of life and an excitement about the unknown, but its a little to blatant and I don't really see how How that matches him letting Cassandra dry out and explode in The End of the World.

The good news is Bille Piper is staying as Rose. Nothing gives me more pleasure than watching "Who" with my daughter, knowing that she's watching a portrayal of a strong, independent, brave and capable young woman, rather than the skanks and deadbeats that populate most of UK "drama"
