I absolutely loved Prince of Egypt (best animated feature next to the greatest of Disney for me), Eldorado and Sinbad, from all their CGI works i only liked SHREK 2 which was brilliant (far better than the first or Antz or SharkTale). Madagarcar looks gorgeous on the other hand, with a very stylized graphism which prove that CGI can also have an identity just like trad. anim, and that's a great innovation from Dreamworks (compare it to the classical cuty puppy design of Chicken Little).

I despise sharktales and Madagascar looks stupid. Spirit was boring and music sucked. Ants looked cheap. Prince of egypt i liked. road to el dorado was ok the colours were overly bright. sinbad i liked the CGI, chicken run looked overly reacted. toy soldiers looked like a ripoff. Shrek 1 & 2 was ok but overrated!

Shrek was excellent among the best animated movies ever. I realy liked Joseph and Prince of Egypt too. I thought Road to El Dorado was very good as well. Shrek 2 was dissapointing to me, although this may be because of the hype more than actually being a bad movie.
However, Shark's Tale, Sinbad and and Spirit all sucked really really bad. Antz was just a lame copy. Madagascar doesn't look very good either.
So really I find Dreamworks hit and miss.

I hate Dreamworks animation. It seems all that studio does is try to make new ways to either make fun of Disney or other movies and companies make a crappy story to surround those jokes. That's basicly what SharkTale and Shrek 2 were!
The only Dreamworks animated movie I loved was Chicken Run and Dreamworks didn't even make that!
However I guess not all Dreamworks animated movies are bad. I liked Shrek, but wasn't as great as Pixar's movies and gets to much credit sometimes, espiecially when it stole Monster's Inc.'s Oscar. I also thought Spirt was a good movie! It was both funny and exciting movie for the whole family. Road to Eldorado was a pretty good movie too. It was funny and didn't try to copy anything.
However there are of coarse alot of crappy Dreamworks animated movies. I already mentioned Shrek 2 and SharkTale, but I also hated alot of their other movies. Sinbad was a bore-fest, Antz would've been okay if it wasn't so boring for kids, Prince of Egypt shouldn't have been animated, same with Joseph, and Madagascar looks painful! If Eisner and Iger leave soon, then I think Katzenberg should get back with Disney and start making good films again!

I have mixed feelings on Dreamworks, but I generally like them. I feel their best film is far and away The Prince of Egypt, though I was surprised at how much I really liked Shrek 2 (I thought it was much better than the first). I generally like the original Shrek as well as Spirit, think Antz and El Dorado were simply okay, and I have no interest whatsoever in seeing Shark Tale (the trailers looked atrocious) or Madagascar (not as atrocious, but it still doesn't really grab my interest).
I liked their 2D Animation.
As for CGI, the only movie I can think of liking (at the moment) is Shrek, the first&original.
But I might give Madagascar a chance even though it reminds me of SharkTale...the relying on famous actors to voice the characters to make it a famous movie.

Also, Spirit's scenery animation and animation in general reminded me more of the early Disney, the scenery was beautiful, the plot was wonderful and the characters great. A lot of people don't like it because there is not much talking, it's told by a narrator mostly, I think it gives it character. Look at the 80's movie Milo and Otis, anyone remember that, Dudly Moore narrated the whole movie and people to this day love it! It wasn't animated, but still...
One of my favorite non-Disney animted movies is "Spirit". I thought it had great music, great plot, awesome animation and I love how Matt Damon narrated the movie.
As for 3D animation, I really enjoyed Shrek and Shrek 2. It's rare when a sequel is actually as good as/is better than the original. I didn't see Shark Tale because, frankly, I didn't want to. But Madagascar does have potential!

I can't believe you atleast didn't like the music!MickeyMouseboy wrote:I despise sharktales and Madagascar looks stupid. Spirit was boring and music sucked.
I really liked Spirit for the fact that it didn't try to sqeeze in every joke in the book just to satisfy the audience. It was pure art, and kinda reminded me of Bambi with man being evil (in a way) and taking your place in life as a leader.

The weird thing is, their 2D one's are the only ones I really like. Sinbad is probably my fave non-Disney animated movie, and Spirit was really good. I don't really like any of the others. I know how popular Shrek was but I didn't like it that much. I don't really go in for the slap-stick humor much.toonaspie wrote:i loved spirit: stallion of the cimarron, it's a bit upsetting that such a good film edured such terrible marketing which is why few people have seen it
it's even sadder that the 2D animation got killed off because of Sinbad's failure cuz Dreamworks 2D films had so much potential for standing out

Well, my favourite film has to be Antz. I'm sort of torn, because I do hate the character designs. The insects all look so creepy. But it has an amazing script, which is surprisingly adult (there is absolutely no pandering to appeal to young children at all in it) and it touches on so many issues that I can sympahise with. I do not, in any way, think it can be called a copy of A Bug's Life. The two are totally different films going in totally different directions.
I did like Road to El Dorado, but it wasn't quite right. Originally it was to be a sly innuendo filled animation for adults - I can remember one news story saying it was to be the first animated film where the main characters would curse and swear (which wouldn't actually be true, but there you go) and it appears Dreamworks had a change of plan half-way through the production and decided animated films only sell if marketed to children. So what we ended up with was a not-that-engaging mix - a kids film but still starring lovable rouges which were inteded to appeal to adults.
Prince of Egypt I can take or leave. Again, to me, the character designs look wrong and are verging on ugly some of the time. Like Mr Toad, I enjoyed the "cheapquel"
Joseph just as much as PoE. I especially like the song "Miracle Child" in Joseph.
Sinbad, well, Sinbad was a mess. And I would hardly call it 2D - the whole film was filled with CGI effects and creatures. It did have some good animation, but the script was poor and the story was terrible. Here's an idea. Why not actually adapt some of the real Sinbad stories insted of writing a lame new one?
Spirit. Sorry, but I've turned this off numerous times. The wife and daughter have seen it though.
I've not seen Shark Tale, but from what I've read about it, this seems to be more of a copy of A Bugs Life than Finding Nemo.
And now we come to the Shrek films. I hate Shrek. There I've said it. The jokes aren't even half as clever as they think they are. The parodies are not really parodies, the writers simply take an iconic character/sequence/event from already over exposed popular culture and then shoehorn it into the script with a sledgehammer (and when they actually do choose to parody something less well known - such as the iconic beach scene from "From Here to Eternity" it sails over the heads of 95% of the audience - no wonder they don't try harder). But what's much worse to me is the whole "be who you are" moral of the film totally falls apart because, convieniently, Fiona happens to be an ogre too. Looks like animated movies aren't ready for an "interracial" coupling yet.
As for Madagascar, well, I actually like the character designs. Much for the same way I like the ones in Disney's Hercules. Sometimes less is more and style wins over realism. But to me, they are designs intended for handdrawn animation. To put them into CGI shows Dreamworks are making a CGI film for the sake of making a CGI film.
