When it comes to platinums, do people here buy a normal copy for watching and a gift set for decoration? I've looked at a number of DVD lists here and have seen that some people own both a normal edition and gift set edition. What does everyone do?
I have the giftsets for Aladdin and The Lion King....I watch the DVDs,just like any normal release(I only got the boxes because I really like both movies)....I don't see any point in having 2 of the exact same DVD(the only Disney film I have more than one copy of on DVD is Mulan, but that's because it's one of my favorite movies, and they added alot of special features to the new release...)..
"It's the apocalypse all right....I always thought I'd have a hand in it..." -Professor Farnsworth(Futurama)
I have both The Lion King and Aladdin gift sets + our local R2 versions of them, too. I bought first the regular discs and soon after I also wanted to have the gift sets. And they are not exact the same because our local versions we have more language options, slightly different artwork and better picture quality(PAL).
And I love to collect both R1 and R2 discs of the Disney classics.
We bought the Gift Sets of Aladdin and Lion King.
It's a shame not all Platinum Editions had it...it would've been nice since Platinum sounds like the highest and best.
Ok so I'm dying to know- what is included in the gift set??? I tried to look up the upcoming Cinderella one on the "preorder" from amazon.com and it didn't give any details. I am recent to collecting so I haven't seen these.

What are they and are they worth the extra money?
Platinum DVD plus companion book, sketches by
animator Ollie Johnston, numbered film frame; $49.99 SRP

What Lightyear said...and I think they're worth it if you're a fan of the movie! I use EBAY and get it for a lot cheaper than the SRP of 49.99...or I buy it the day it comes out @ Best Buy!
I don't have any Gift Sets because I live in Finland where we don't get any, of course I could import them, but I'm too lazy to bother when it's only the movie what matters to me the most. The Cinderella Gift Srt sounds tempting because it's such an old movie already, the booklets and every other small stuff could be a nice add.
Disney DVD's 2005: Bambi PE, Alice in Wonderland SE, Tarzan SE, Cinderella PE - much much more!
As much as I love the gift sets and think they are extremely cool, I just dont think I would ever use or look at the book or drawings. Too much money and not enough of my interest!

The Lion King DVD in the Gift set has a slipcover. Same thing with Aladdin.
