Hi all,
just got back from seeing Holes!!! I actually got my mom to go with me; that was an event in and of itself (she thinks all disney movies are bad because they are animation...uggggg.....she can't stand animation.....uggg). She really enjoyed this one!!!! (i'm slowly changing her over...!!)
I didn't get to stay around to see the end credits (she wanted to leave and, well, that's that) but was glad to see someone give the spoiler.
I throughly enjoyed the movie and now want to read the book. I don't know who the author is...can anyone tell me? It goes by the same title, correct? Is this a series of books or just one? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

The book is titled Holes and is written by Louis Sachar. It is only one book and he has stated several times that there will not be a Holes 2. However, he recently published Stanley Yelnat's Surval Guide to Canp Green Lake.
Earlier this evening I had the pleasure of hearing him speak (and getting my copy of Holes signed!) and, in addition to reading several very funny extracts from "Survival Guide," he talked about the challenges of adapting the book into a screenplay and filming the movie. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, be sure to look out for him as the man that Sam is trying to sell onion juice to, claiming that it can make him grow hair.

I'm working in a library right now!
I think I'll pop downstairs to the kid's library and grab a copy of that...

Just got back from the theater. Which by the way was totally packed. Holes was very entertaining. All of the actors were great. The only thing annoying were the flashbacks. I felt more annoyed during the first half of the movie because the story was choppy. Just as I was getting into a certain scene, here comes a flashback. But by the second half of the movie I was really engrossed in the story & truly enjoyed it.
Kudos to the cast of Holes. Everyone from Jon Voight to all of the younger actors were strong & believable. I highly recommend catching this flick on the big screen. Hopefully Disney is working on an impressive DVD for Holes too

Videotropic is reporting "Holes" is being prepped for a September release.
I have a feeling this will be out in the UK Cinemas round about August (mid way through the school's summer holidays), meaning a short 4 week wait for the DVD. And then people ask why I don't go to the cinema anymore.

the reason I don't go see movies that much in the movie theater is that it costs way too much. After paying a full price adult ticket (either 4 for matinee, or much much much much more for regular) and drinks and popcorn, I could buy the DVD when it comes out for the same price and see it over and over and over and over and over again!!!!!

Right now I've got it pretty good when it comes to cheap theater movies; I work in a really nice first-run cinema with all the trimmings - stadium seating, comfy seats, nice sound system, great picture, etc. - and I can see movies for free. What's nice about this theater is it picks up indie films as well as the big Hollywood stuff, so we always have a good mix. Like right now we're carrying big stuff like Anger Management, Holes, and A Man Apart - and art house films like Bend It Like Beckham, The Good Thief, and Better Luck Tomorrow. What I find funny about Beckham is that it's been out in the UK (and most of Europe) for a year now - and we're just getting it in limited release over here in the States. There's definitely some culture clash - especially since David Beckham is virtually unknown in the U.S. - but I loved it anyway. Very entertaining without being brainless.
Anyways, I also volunteer at the Minnesota Zoo, where the local IMAX theater is. So I can see those spectacular films for free, too. I'm especially looking forward to Horses: The Story of Equus.
Even when I do go to a "pay-for" theater, I only get the ticket. Movie food just isn't worth it for the prices you gotta pay.
And the cool thing is this summer we're getting most of the huge movies - X-Men United, Matrix: Reloaded, Finding Nemo, Hulk, T3 - the list goes on. I hope we get Matrix: Revolutions and Return of the King this fall. *crosses fingers*
Wow - okay, I'm off on a huge tangent! I think I'll wrap this up, then. LOL

Saw it today. Thought it was good. I found the backstory kind of jarring like Robyn. In fact, the backstory wasn't as interesting to me as the contemporary storyline. I understand the need for it, but it weakened the whole thing, IMO. A little less than what I hoped for, but a solid movie nonetheless.

Ditto to everything in Paka's first post. I was really impressed by Holes and went back to see it in theaters three times, and have probably watched it five times on DVD. I'm really glad to see that most people here enjoyed it, and it's surprise success at the box office was a nice surprise, though not too big a surprise as the room was always packed when I went. I've never caught that stinger, though, Jake... hopefully it's on the DVD too.
I started to read the book but never got around to finishing it. The Yelnats Guide sounds awesome too- I didn't know about it until now. I was a big fan of some of Sachar's other books when I was younger.

I liked the movie, too. And I think that Shia LaBeouf or as I like to call him "Louis Stevens"
was great in this movie. I think the part was written for him.
But in the book Stanley is overweight. I haven't read it yet, but that's one of the differences I know.
But anyway, I thought it was really good.

I never made it to theaters to see this movie and I have to be honest it in no way sparked my intreast. However last summer I checked it out from local liebrary just because you know it was free and I figured what the heck lets see what Disney did now. Well the first time I saw it I didn't get it I was confused through most of it. On the 2nd watch I absolutley loved fell in love with it and wanted to purchase it. I was such a good movie I think the guys did a great job in playing thier roles. and though I can't really rememeber the book now since I read it so long ago there were afew things that did click which lead me to believe that for the most part there movie was true to the book.
So for those of you out there who havent seen it I recommend it. Its an awsome movie

Well I just saw the movie for the first time and loved it!
I read the book about 2 years ago and loved that and the film certainly did a fantastic job of putting the complicated story onto film. The story is fantastically intertwined and even though some may be confused at the start due to flashing into different locations and times it all becomes clear in the end and i think was handled superbly. There were a few moments that suffered from "ThePrisonerofAzkabanitis" a new term i have just coined, meaning that some parts were not hammered home enough (like with the map in PoA). Even though it was mentioned at the beginning of the movie that the lizards don't like onions, by the time you get to the end most would probably would have forgotten this. Hence the reason why they are not bitten when they are in the pit! On the whole though I recommend everyone sees this movie.
