*dredges up an old thread... by Wonderlicious* How very ironic! ;)

Well, I've been meaning to post my personal list for a while now... and yes, deathie's correct in that we shouldn't derive guilt from our interests, but I think the term "guilty pleasures" may be more of an expression than anything. I think it's a self-awareness thing... we're conscious of the stigma and stereotypes surrounding said interest, but we pursue that interest anyway. If you truly feel ashamed of what you're doing, then that's just plain unhealthy, says I. :headshake:

Anyhoo, so a listing of at least some of my own "guilty pleasures"...

~My Little Pony - People should know this one by now... :D Love them little plastic horsies! Most likely due to nostalgia, but hey. LOL

~astrology - I blame this mostly on my brother's intense interest in it for about a year or two... he wouldn't shut up about it around me, and it kind of... rubbed off? I will say that it's very interesting entering your info into an Astro.com profile to see what comes up... O_o

~McDonald's - Yes, I'll admit it. I love that artery-clogging place. I think I go maybe twice a month...

~Raffi - Another nostalgic luuuurve! I HAVE to play his Christmas album every year still... hehe.

~romance - As much as I hate people, I'm beginning to appreciate some luuuurve stuff; films like Titanic or Cold Mountain - love in spite of itself. :P

~Sarah McLachlan - Not saying she's a bad artist, or anything! In fact, I quite like her stuff. It's just that her music is just so ubiquitous - on radio, on film, etc. - and I think I've been gushing about her too much lately.
Life often leaves us standing bare, naked and dejected with a lost opportunity. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: "Too late."

Hmmm...stuff that I'm embarrassed to admit.

- That I was ever in love

Gosh, wow, short list.

Gulity pleasures? I listen to a huge variety of music. I have a strange love for children's music mostly from kid's TV shows and movies, and I feel a little bashful about that. Light, overly-sweet, cutesy, funny, crazy music that someone pushing 30 should not be listening to in her spare time! Luckily, I can avidly seek out the music with the excuse that it's for my job. And thank god for headphones!

I can also include the Japanese pop music that I used to collect and can only half-understand. One of my favorite songs from all time is "La Soldier" from Sera Myu. I almost hate to admit that I have about 50 Sailor Moon CD's alone, mostly in Japanese, but also in English, Spanish, and German, but that was an avid hobby a few years ago when I was making more money. I'm still looking for the Italian one, though!

Another guilty pleasure? I love being a pack-rat. I have a hard time throwing anything away, so it makes my tiny house more cramped than it needs to be. I also have to fight the urge to hide my extensive DVD collection when certain people come to visit! Some people just don't understand.
My love for Disney is not in any way a guilty pleasure; I gladly defend myself whenever need be! :float:

Let me rephrase that I am the only one who is my age who doesn't like roller coasters. Thank you for pointing out that flaw in my statement.

Hey Miss Paka, just because I once had a bumping-old-thread fetish doesn't mean you have to mock me for it. :p

I'm going to come out of the closet a bit more and admit another of my guilty pleasures...

Old Disney TV Cartoons
Okay, they're not exactly aimed to entertain adults as much as kids like the Disney classics, but I love things like Gummi Bears, Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers and Duck Tales! I really hope that they come to DVD, even if they come as a little compilation of episodes. :)[/b]

guilty pleasures

Post by Joshrzmeup »

I have quite a few...

-Cinnabons
-Starbucks (Grande Gingerbread Latte..they have one in the meijer store 2 miles from my house..)
-Cadbury Creme Eggs
-Romance novels (the clean ones)
-Princess Diaries books + Movies
-Josh Groban music
-Romantic comedies
-Spepding my little paychecks ( I try to save my money..really I do...but saving for tuition only is not enough..i need to reward myself for actually working the few hours that they give me (this week...4 hours)
-McAlister's Deli food (I work at one, their spuds, s huge as they may be, are sooooo good)

TV Shows:
Charmed
Desperate Housewives
The Nanny

A Reality show..(normally, I am against reality shows...I think they are fake and are not 'reality')
But, I watch the show, 'Starting Over' just because a past favorite gymnast of mine, Vanessa Atler, is in the house, and I want to know what she has to say about her experiences as an elite gymnast and how her life was shattered by not making the 2000 olympics team and what she's up to now. Very interesting, I might add.

1. MTV's Spyder Games. If that show was ever put out on DVD, I would buy it in 2 seconds... FLAT!! Yet it's just not a good show.

2. Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. This used to be a guilty pleasure, because I'm more than cured of watching the new episodes. I used to like watching the first episodes that came out, because hey it was spring 2003 and I thought Carson and Ted were secretly in love with each other. I wanted to watch it to see what their personalities would form into (to see if they had any) and to see them interact with each other, make jokes... Well, now the show has all the appeal of a vomiting contest. So, HALLELUJAH I'm cured!

3. Dawson's Creek. I think they stopped showing that show on weekday mornings on TBS. I think. I never liked it for the hollow-fake-drama, in fact that's why I feel guilty about it. But I like it for the guys. And sometimes I like to watch it, just to think about how I would turn it on it's ear and corrupt it if I were ever to satirize it.

4. Step by Step. Bad combination of The Brady Bunch and Full House, but I think the characters are slightly better and the writing is just a tad smarter, for the majority of the show there are no stupid kids to make the show stories watered down. But in the end, I think much of the punchlines were geared toward women who would give in to their dumb husbands' sports or tool fetishes. But I watch it because I still have a bit of a crush on Patrick Duffy.

5. The Anna Nicole Show. Another guilty pleasure I've been cured of. I used to watch this show when it was on, especially since the shows got better in the second season after the stupid first season. But now I just don't watch it anymore.

6. On shows like Third Watch and the Special Victims Unit seasons of Law & Order, I always hope that if a kid is in danger, he/she will die. I mean, on Third Watch, the kid was stuck between the concrete walls of one brick building wall and the wall of a shack/garage trying to get his dog out and he gets to live only after almost 2 minutes of television drama with doctors and police frantically rushing the boy onto a stretcher and with those defibrillators to get his heart going again, while the guy who owns the shack/garage is hastling the police about breaking through the bricks of his building to get the boy out and threatening to sue the police. And this is the set-up for a perfect scene where the boy will actually die! Does he? Of course not. Because he's a little boy and not a girl- because you know on these f-ed up hour-long dramas, it's okay to have 2 hundred stories where girls are killed during rapes and prostitutes and strippers are offed by gang members and mafioso. But to have a little boy child killed is just plain wrong... Who makes up these goddamn rules?

7. Will & Grace. It used to be a guilty pleasure of mine before Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Now I'm a fan of W&G because of the high-quality acting and comedic performances, and I'm not the least bit ashamed to admit it. Plus, since Harvey Birdman decided to lose their backbone when it came to gay jokes, W&G has been the only place to catch a good gay joke.

8. Saturday Night Live. I still actually watch that show sometimes even though all they do now is write sketches around their guests and it's degenerated into a piece of garbage that only makes jokes about Lindsay Lohan's boobs or the fact that the Olsen Twins are now 18... Believe it or not, they actually had a funny segment on Martha Stewart the other day!!

I gamble a lot but it's not my fault because my friend is the one who is addicted to it. He drags me along to the dog track and play poker with him when the opportunity comes up. But gambling is fun anyways unless you lose.
