Disney Educational Shorts

Post by Porce »

Disney seems to divide its educational shorts up into three categories:
-Educational School Films (see other thread) and the 1946 feature film
-Goofy/Donald Featurettes
-Jiminy Cricket

The Goofy/Donald Featurettes (Steel and America, Donald and the Wheel, The Litterbug, Donald in Math Magic Land, Freewayphobia, Goofy's Freeway Trouble) have not seen the light of DVD but would make a great set for collector's as these shorts truly are excellent.

The Jiminy Cricket "I'm No Fool" and "You and Your" shorts should go on the Pinocchio Platinum, since I can't think of any other place to put them. A couple could go on a "Fun and Fancy Free" DVD if Disney ever re-releases it into a better edition.

Rumours are that there will be a special Disney Treasures "A Disney Education" at some point in the future, so it is quite possible most of the educational shorts will be saved for that release.

But on Pinocchio Platinum edition, I'd like to see the addition of one of the "I'm No Fool..." shorts featring Jiminy Cricket and Pinocchio (Pinocchio is drawn as a real boy in the shorts, logical as they take place after the film).
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

I'd like to see some of these educational shorts surface on DVD somewhere. As I said in my other thread... http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=142
... I have been trying to live the golden years of my lost childhood, and some of this involves dodgy Disney toons that were the equivalent of the Simpson's frank guide to sex called 'Fuzzy Bunny's Guide to You-Know-What' :D

The inclusion of two "I'm No Fool..." shorts on the UK/Aussie Pinocchio: SE indicates they are still playing around with these shorts, and will hopefully see the light of day on some collection soon (but probably a collector's only tin, as I imagine their widespread appeal would be limited).

Still, a special Disney Treasures "A Disney Education" tin sounds like a great idea! I'd buy it!

Donald in Mathmagicland is tentatively scheduled to come out as part of the 4th wave of the Treasures in a compilation collection.

I am really looking forward to this "Compilation" release. From what you have told us about it, it sounds very interesting.

I would expect some in the future Donald sets, like Donald and the Wheel. The ones I'd like to come out the most are: Scrooge McDuck and Money, Harold and his Amazing Seed (or Plant, or something), Winnie the Pooh Discovers the Seasons, the What Should I Do series, and all the Jiminy Cricket stuff. I guess because those are the ones I remember from my childhood. I'd also like to see the one that used Alice from Alice in Wonderland, as I seem to have read about such a short (not sure what it was about).

That cartoon was featured on the first episode of WWOC under the title "An Adventure in Color".

Disney Movie Club exclusive - Donald in Mathmagic Land

Post by Calamity 23 »

I'd prefer not to join a movie club but would really like to get Donald in Mathmagic Land on DVD. Do Disney Movie Club exclusive titles typically become available from general retailers after a period of time? Meaning, would I be able to pick up or order DDiML from somewhere else in the near future? Also, is DDiML getting its own release mean that it's not likely to be on an upcoming Treasures set? (I realize that can only be answered with a best guess.) I was hoping it would be on an educational shorts collection or the last Donald compilation but don't want to miss out if it won't be there.

Thanks in advance.

Which of these educational shorts are theatrical cartoons, and which are TV-cartoons?

According to bcdb, both Freeway Phobia No. 1 and Goofy’s Freeway Trouble were classified as Goofy shorts when they were released, even if they are aften seen as educational cartoons. Also Donald in Mathmagic Land was released as a Donald short (according to the same source).

None of these are considered true educational shorts although they may well be grouped this way on a Treasure. Donald in Mathmagic Land is classified as a Donald Duck short as it had a Donald Duck title card. However, the Goofy cartoons did not have a Goofy title card so they were classified as Specials(ie no title card).

Educational cartoons are classified as non theatrically released so none of these fit.

The non theatrical shorts have been prodeced as follows

Educational 157
Armed Forces 75
Sponsor 44
NFBC 5
Theme Park 4
TV 1

The last educational shorts were produced in 1986 - Aids and a Moving Experience. Some of the series of educational shorts include The Challenge of Survival, Fitness and Me, Destinations, Im No Fool, History Alive,

There were a couple of sites that did a better job than the big cartoon database such as the encyclopedia of Disney Animated Shorts but they no longer seem to be around. Okay found one it had just moved.

OK. Looks like someone has done some impressive job on Disney's shorts (but it looks like it hasn't been updated recently, because I can't find The Little Matchgirl anywhere. Neither does it mention Aids and a Moving Experience and some others on your list, this also goes for imdb).
