Are Slip-covers being used too much?
I know that a lot of big Disney 2 Disc releases in North America (and now in Europe, too) have been getting some form of slip-cover treatment, be it a book-replica, a hologram or perhaps just a straight-forward replica. Don't get me wrong, they look nice, but I think Disney are using them a bit too much. It seems a bit of a cliche if a slip-cover appears on a DVD as almost every Disney DVD is recieving a slipcover. Around twenty Disney DVDs from the past 2.5 years in North America have had slips, and I know over here in England, a similar trend is beginning. Here is a list of DVDs which had a slip-cover at one point (thanks to Jake Lipson's list and Jayden for making a small point-out
):
Monsters Inc (Canadians on this board said that the first Canadian prints had slips)
Beauty and the Beast: Platinum Edition
A Bug's Life: CE (2003 Reissue Version)
Sleeping Beauty: SE
The Lion King: Platinum Edition
Finding Nemo: CE
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
Alice in Wonderland: Masterpiece Edition
The Lion King 1½
The Lion King II: Simba's Pride - Special Edition
Aladdin: Platinum Edition
Mulan: Special Edition
Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas
Mary Poppins: 40th Anniversary Edition
Mulan II
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Porco Rosso
The Cat Returns
Bambi
The Incredibles
If you buy all these DVDs, which some on this board people will do, you've basicly turned your DVD shelf into a slip-swamp. Just with a few slip-covered DVDs on my shelf such as the Region 2 Platinums, the Pixar films and my Region 1 Mary Poppins, I'm losing space. Okay, I know many people on these boards lobster-love slipcovers, but I think that they should have just been reserved to the Platinum Editions and possibly the Pixar films. With some normal special editions beating out the most special releases, I think that a special treat in the form of a book slip-cover would make a decent stand out. Again, I'm okay with seeing slips on some of my Disney DVDs, but I think I can survive if there isn't one. My Region 1 Alice in Wonderland didn't come with a slipcover, but I'm cool.

But you do make a point...they should have only made slipcovers for the Platinum and Pixar! (Pixar has wonderful, glossy slipcovers!

I don't know what my take is on these slipcovers but so far, I like them, and I get disappointed when Disney decides not to make a slipcover on one of their DVDs..

True, they take up space, but it makes everything equal on my shelf especially with the Snow White PE, Tarzan CE, Atlantis CE, TENG CE (You know the double standard case

P.S. Doesn't Alice's DVD feel naked without it's book slipcover?? I think that's one slipcover you should have, Joe!

I think slip covers should of only been reserved for Platinums, Pixar movies, Ghibli movies, and maybe SEs and MEs such as Alice in Wonderland, Mulan, and Pocahontas. Sequels do not need slip covers. So yes they are being overused.
Best Movies of 2009:

2. Inglorious Basterds
3. The Hurt Locker
4. Coraline

i don't think they are overused,i like the slipcovers a lot ! especially R1 ones.they make the DVD so collectible to me.
we have slipcover for every disney dvd released in taiwan, for the chinese version cover, but not all lof them look good
and my favorite with-slipcover-package is R1 Alice!
( but i think R1 Snow White looks good enough even without it !)
i am a bit down when i got my Brother Bear and found disney didn't have a slipcover for it LOL

Well, she still has clothes on like on the slipcover.RJKD23 wrote:P.S. Doesn't Alice's DVD feel naked without it's book slipcover?? I think that's one slipcover you should have, Joe!

I bought Alice on DVD almost a year after it came out on DVD. I was originally waiting for the UK Region 2 version as I thought that it'd come out eventually. It is being released on DVD over in Merrie Olde England as of next Monday, but a while back I discovered it was getting a 1 Disc release instead of 2 Discs, so that (and a few other things) prompted me to go multi-region. The copy I got from Canada was slip-less, but like I said, I'm not really bothered as it would take up too much space.
Plus, I have the Mary Poppins DVD with the cool slip-cover, so I can say I've bought the T-Shirt when it comes to book slip-cover related issues.

I like the slip covers because it gives you more info. on the movie and how to work it. But sometimes it gets anoying because you have to slid the movie out of the cover, but its not that much of a pain. Also when people put stickers on the movie they put them on the slip cover. I hate when they put it on the movie case and you have to try to peel it off but sometimes it doesn't want to. It makes me mad.

Well im also from the UK and i have noticed we have been getting alot more slipcovers lately.....the thing is i love slipcovers!
I think when a dvd has a slipcover it makes them look more special from the rest of the collection. But theres one thing.....most of the time the slipcover is exactly the same as the cover itself. Only the pixar slipcovers are different because they are shiny.
But yeh i love slipcovers!

hiiiii
I love the slipcovers, and I think every 2+ disc set should come with one. Those who only want slipcovers on the most special titles do not have to keep them, so everybody wins when the consumer is given the option.
If the slipcovers caused a major increase in price, my opinion would change, but that has not been the case so far.
I second the opinion that a slipcover is far superior to the double-alpha Amaray cases that they used for the Tarzan-era special editions.

No.
Well slipcovers are great idea to protect the original cover from the DVD.
When I see a slipcover I want to buy the DVD because it looks beautiful.
