It sounds like a good idea to me to include a gender line beneath the avatars. I would suggest making it an optional entry for those who like to remain a little mysterious.

Not anytime soon, unfortunately. I think having an image below everyone's name would be more of a pain than the occassional "Oh, you're a girl?" post. That could change, but for now, it's not a high priority.
