Possible platinum and other suggestions

Post by Prince Phillip »

I would think that disney would release Bambi next spring, but they can be pretty dissappionting. :x . I think it would be pretty stupid to rerelease Peter Pan so soon after it's "special edtion" release in the US already, but think it is very possible that Pinocchio could be released. With that in mind here is how I think the Platinum line-up will go:

Pinochio-Spring'04 (Possibly Bambi)
Aladdin-Fall'04
Bambi-S'05
Cinderella-F'05
The Jungle Book-S'06
The Little Mermaid-F'06 (Mermaid and Junglebook possibly switched)
101 Dalmations-S'07
Lady and the Tramp-F'07
Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, And Fantasia- 2008 and beyond.
(but Why? when they already have collectors and special edtions. Although Sleeping Beauty and Fantasia belong in the Platinum collection. I think Peter Pan would just make a nice 2- Disc collectors or special edtion)

That brings me to part 2, movies I think deserve 2 disc treatment.

Alice in Wonderland and The Sword in the Stone are 2 great classics that i don't think get the recognition they deserve.
Also The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Mulan. All great movies.
Actually I guess pretty much all the animated classics through the upcoming brother bear and beyond would be cool, but there are a lot of movies from the late 60's to the mid- late 80's that just were not good. Even though the Lilo and Stitch and Treasure Planet DVD's were packed with stuff I wouldn't mind MORE!!! Also I hope they rerelease the 2 disc Tarzan, because it is one of my favorite disney movies and i diddn't get a chance to purchase it.

Any more suggestions? I'd like to hear them. Also any new news would be greatly appreciated. About plantinum line up, rereleases, whatever.

Also can't wait for more disney treasures sets, already have mm in color and bw, not too impressive i know.

I think you're pretty close to how I think they'll be released. I have a very strong suspicion that Pinocchio will come out in March. You're wrong, though, about 2008 and beyond. Disney plans on releasing ALL the platinum titles by 2007. I dunno how they'll do that, but they plan to.

Oh, and I sooooooooo agree with you on how Alice and Hunchback should both be platinums. :D

That's pretty impossible. The only thing I can take from it is that they'd be releasing all the titles originally in the Platinum Collection by the Spring of 2007. Unless they go to like 3 a year, they'll wind up in 2008 or possibly 2009, depending on what this September release of Sleeping Beauty is.

I heard that Mulan II and Tarzan II were both coming out next year. Does anyone know if the originals will also be (re)released?

In response to Disney kid, I believe they meant that either all the animated movies would be out by 2007, regardless of platinum status, or that all the original platinums, the first 10 would be out by then. There is no way that they could have them all out by 2007 if they're only releasing 2 a year, but then again, you never know.

Also I don't believe Sleeping Beauty in Sept. will be a Platinum release, although I would like that very much. I just checked the dinsey website and they still have the original art work posted. :? what does this mean? I think it would work better if they released two platinum titles this year, otherwise they come up odd, but they did say the 2 a year release would not start until next year  . Oh well we'll see.

All i know is that the most obvious changes will be with bambi and cinderella since those are the only ones (minus aladdin and tlk) which haven't been released yet. IN FACT, i think that if disney moves those two movies back instead of moving them up, then that will be a huge mistake. Lord knows i can't wait to have TLM on platinum dvd, but i'd much rather have cinderella and bambi on dvd AT ALL, than have TLM re-released earlier... That being said, the schedule seems likely but really, who are we kidding, we'll never know the rest of the story....that is until 2007 or so.. :D

I always took that 2007 as a conservative estimate, given the additions to the line-up. I think that press-conference was basically saying they AIM to have all the titles (and more) out sooner than originally planned.
I don't think there is any hard and fast rule yet, even as to release dates beyond the next year or so.
Pinocchio is likely to be given a release soon (given the European & Aussie editions are out). Having said that, look how long we had the Rescuers on DVD before the US got the exact same copy.
I think it is all purely speculation at this point - and besides, I like surprises. :D

Agreed - but that didn't stop Disney France from released a new 2 disc "Peter Pan" set so soon after the French "special edition" release. :)

I think this whole increased Platinum schedule is all about making money (not HD-DVD) and a decision made - like so many of Disney's financial decisions - with little thought as to the immediate concequences.

As such I expect the first "March" Platinum release to be something Disney can pull together reasonably quickly. A quick release of the 2 disc "Peter Pan" (hopefully enchanced for the US market) would not be unreasonable for that very reason IMOHO, especially as the same discs are being released in Japan next week. (If "Aladdin" wasn't still scheduled to play on IMAX I would place all my money on that release being bumped up).

I don't think it will be "Pinocchio" - the single disc "Special Edition" is slowly being rolled out across the world and if Disney US were planning on releasing "Pinocchio" I'm sure the rollout would be halted to make way for a 2 disc release.

On the face of it, it's strange Disney would announce "new additions" to the Platinum line now, if they're not going to appear for the next 3 or 4 years - especially as the "spin" on the announcement was Disney wanted to get all their films out on DVD before HD-DVD took over. Why bother announcing more releases? Another reason I think one of the "new additions" will be appearing sooner rather than later.

I agree with many of the people who are saying that this is an unthought out, poorly planned marketing gimmick, because Disney needs money. Like 2099net said, Disney makes quick decisions without thinking of the consequences. The whole reason The Lion King is coming out this year and Aladdin was pushed back to next year is because Disney though the Lion King would bring in more money, which I think sucks since Aladdin has already been off the shelves for 10 years. They’re desperate need for money is what has also spurred on those, for the most part, unbearable “cheapquels”. While the increased Platinum out put is a great for us, it might also mean cheaper quality, if Disney decides to slap them together very quickly, which I hope will not be the case , but it’s definitely a possibility.

I also think it’s possible Disney will try to push for an early platinum peter pan, ect. Releases, but definitely think Pinocchio will be next years March platinum, simply because they have been revamping it to release next year as “special edition” more than likely they will relable it as platinum.

It pains me to say this, and again I don’t think it’s a good idea but Disney might. I think it is very possible that Disney will spread out the three remaining titles in order to keep the interest of the general public i.e.
Aladdin next fall
Bambi 2005
Cinderella 2006 or something like that, because the average joe who has the already released non platinum versions of the remaining titles might not continue collecting once they have Cindy and Bambi. (Just a thought). Well we’ll see.

Does anyone know if Return of Jafar and King of Theives will follow after Aladdin. Probably since that seems to be the pattern now)

I cant really say much more than whats been said but I still think that Bambi or Cinderella will be the next one released and Aladdin will definately be the fall 2004 release. I think Pinocchio will be released in the US sometime next year as well, Disney will just annouce that its coming and thats when we'll know about that one.

And I also very much agree about Alice and Hunchback getting Special Edtions. I think all the films from the 90's should get 2 disc treatments bar Rescuers Down Under. Sword In The Stone should get a 2 disc as well.

Well, well, well... ha ha ha, it looks as if I was pretty much on the mark! (forget the list up there^^^^) But I said that the additional platinums would most likely not be included this time around (in several other threads) and in that article on DVDfile, there was no mention of them being part of the collection...

it would seem that the line for October releases will continue like this:
Aladdin '04
Mermaid '05
Cinderella '06
Bambi '07
This is what I got from that article. It's funny, because there were all these loose ends that weren't adding up, but they all came together in that article. Here were my questions:

1. All of the titles would be out by 2007, that means either Cinderella or Bambi wouldn't be released until 2007, otherwise all the titles would be out by 2006 or earlier, as C and B are the only 2 titles left to make their DVD debuts... but now it makes sense...

2. How are they going to get all the platinum titles out by 2007, unless it was just the original 10 platinums, but if they start in 2004 then only one will be out in 2007... But since it seems they are only releasing the first 10, and the 2 a year doesn't kick in until 2005, it all works out...

well i don't know if there was any thing else but I cant remember now anyway... so moving on...

The reason I think the list will go that way is because, it has been rumoured that Little Mermaid would be 2005 platinum to coincide with an Imax release as it's 3 predeccessors had done. Also in the article the guy said something like people have said the past few platinums have been worth the one year wait and I think they will same the same about Mermaid and Cinderella and ofcourse Bambi would be the logical choice to follow Cinderella. Disney if their smart will want to drag out the remaining few titles, their last BIG titles for the october releases, while 101 Dalmation, Junglebook, and Lady and the Tramp will get the Spring/March releases 2005-2007...

Anyway, that's how I see it, and it makes the most sense from a marketing view... all the talk of the 4 addition platinums, true as it may or may not have been, was probably someone running their mouth a bit too much, because even if that is their eventual intention, for now it is probably just as I said above...

(oh and incase anyone cares, the first post in this thread was my first post in this forum, or any for that matter... ahhhhhhhhhhh it seems like so long ago... )

I think their "all by 2007" plan must be like this:

Oct '04 - Aladdin
Mar '05 - Bambi or Cinderella
Oct '05 - The Little Mermaid
Mar '06 - Bambi or Cinderella
Oct '06 - one of these: 101 Dalmatians/Jungle Book/Lady and the Tramp
Mar '07 - one of these: 101 Dalmatians/Jungle Book/Lady and the Tramp
Oct '07 - one of these: 101 Dalmatians/Jungle Book/Lady and the Tramp

Assuming that the 4 titles added to the Platinum Collection ARE still in the Platinum collection, I guess since they'll all have already been released, they're not missing. At least maybe...that's what it's like now. Could change tomorrow?

At the Sleeping Beauty/Lion King DVD event it was stated that there would be no platinum release this coming spring
The Digital Bits wrote:(Platinum titles will be released 2 per year starting in 2005 to make this happen).
So by my reckoning that means that - according to Disney - there are 7 slots for Platinum releases. But also according to Disney (ignoring Sleeping Beauty which may or may not be a Platinum) there are 10 future Platinum releases. Namely (in no particular order, other than my recall);

1.Lady and the Tramp
2. Jungle Book
3. Aladdin
4. Bambi
5. 101 Dalmations
6. The Little Mermaid
7. Cinderella
8. Peter Pan
9. Pinocchio
10. Fantasia

Another indication that Disney doesn't have a clue as to what they are doing and this whole Platinum issue wasn't thought through at all. I also think that this indicates that the Platinum banner isn't even that important (I'm sure Disney regards this September's upcoming Sleeping Beauty as a Platinum release).

Really, we're putting more thought into this Platinum release schedule than Disney have - there annocuements are just full of contridictions - 10 (or 11) remaining titles, 7 slots, Disney International sites all still insist the release hasn't been sped-up, Disney International sites release titles before the US, Sleeping Beauty labeled as a Special Edition only (even though all evidence points to it being a Platinum), if Alice in Wonderland and Pocahontas do get 2 disc Special Editions in January how are they different than the 'Platinum status' Sleeping Beauty Special Edition?... the list goes on and on.

I think maybe Disney should sit down again at the end of the year and think up a whole new plan for releasing their animated classics. For one thing the 28(ish) films that are not platinum are just sitting on the shelves with no promotion or anything, at least with their old vault rotation all the films would get a bit of promotion when they were re-released.

As for the Platinum thing, who knows?

I'm still resorting back to my idea of the "Definintive Collection" which will include 2-disc SE's of ALL the animated classics, from Snow White to Brother Bear. It will also include the oft-excluded Pixar movies, "package" features, and CGI Dinonsaur.

It doesn't matter, as long as there are Disney movies to buy! :D I like the "Definitive Collection" as long as the sequels are added (I only want two, so don't freak anyone).
