The Prince of Egypt on DVD

Post by Disney-Fan »

After a very recent viewing of this movie I have decided to purchase this. Prince of Egypt is one of the better movies I've seen lately, animated and non animated. I would like to have it in my collection. My question is this, what are the main differences between the R1 and R2 versions? The R1 seems to have plenty of bonus feature. Does the R2 version contain the same features?

Any knowledge of differences would be appreciated!
Also, does anyone know of a future better release?

I believe there is a regular and a special edition for R1.
Best Movies of 2009:
1. Moon
2. Inglorious Basterds
3. The Hurt Locker
4. Coraline
5. Ponyo

Overall, the R2 and R1 versions are the same in terms of bonus material. That site says "buy the R1 version!", but the only reason to do so is to get a DTS track.

Getting a DTS track is more important than any bonus feature - get R1. Personally, I thought Joseph was the better movie though.

Of course it's missing the most important special feature. I expect it will be rereleased within the next few years, so I've been holding off on it for awhile.

Eh? What are you getting at Aaron? A Shrek 3 trailer? :?

What special feature is it missing? Did they have a TV making of or something you would like to see?
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

 No- a Shrek 3 trailer would be a detriment! I'm of course referring to the missing "River Lullaby" music video by Amy Grant, which was made to promote the movie and first aired during that 1 hour (or something like that) TV special that was made for the film, which I don't think is included either.

I'd like to see a 2-Disc special edition, maybe packaged with the soundtrack(s), set one day. That would be cool.

Thanks for all the information! You guys are always helpful!
You know, the DVD seems to have quite a few bonus features. I don't really know if I should buy this one or wait for a special edition...

And a bit off topic, you know what I like best about this movie? When some of the songs are played I can understand all the hebrew! It's very cool to see the language you talk being represnted in a international feature! :D

I like this movie, but not enough to buy it. I would definately wait for a 2-Disc re-release. I think this films it the closest any studio has ever come to replicating the magic-esque quality of a Disney or Disney-distributed animated feature. I remember the 1-Hour music television special spoken of. To be quite honest, even then, I thought three soundtracks was a bit much. It was obvious they were going for the Disney musical sensation, but I think three soundtracks, for three different markets, was more poloarizing than it was cohesive. Anyway, you can't say this strategy was a success, because the film did well, but was not a huge phenomenon as expected. I like the film, but Dreamworks really focused on the music rather than the timeless story. In any regards, I think it was a very unique marketing strategy, something that hasn't been replicated since.

Really that's the only difference? That's weird. I was thinking one might be a 2 disc or something. Thanks for helping me out Luke.

AFAIK, the Signature Selection is the original packaging whereas the "DreamWorks Animation" splash logo artwork, is just that new packaging. DW decided to streamline the packaging, so families can recognize the brand more for the Animation line. They even re-packaged El Dorado, and Shrek :D

I would love a two-disc, however the one disc has a wealth of features and an amazing multi-language video clip of "When you Believe".

I never realized there were different covers for the movie! :o

I think it's almost inevitable, it's just a question of when. Even with the "Story So Far" Shrek sets, I'm sure Dreamworks just jealously salivates when they see Disney turn such high numbers on their Platinum reissues of classics and Prince of Egypt is about as close as they have to that.

I also see a two-disc reissue at some point, not sure when. I will certainly purchase it. So many non-Disney animated features that need the red carpet treatment, like Anastasia, FernGully and the Secret of Nimh, etc.
