Your thoughts on.... Bambi: Platinum Edition

If you dig through the forum, you'll see on one of my previous posts that i said i wasn't interested and i wouldn't be buying the Bambi DVD.....so much for that 
i got my DVD last friday from costco (canada) but I was a little disapointed...the only thing inside the case was the 2 discs(of course) and the DVD Guide. I thought for sure there would be more promotions...i'm a collector and thats mainly why I would want them 
. I'd never send them away just to save $2....
anyway i watched the movie and a few features(none of the long ones yet though) and I'm qutie impressed with the movie, but im such a perfectionist...i find it only looks half done. sometimes i noticed the biggest problems with colours...i didnt find the characters had a steady colour scheme and sometimes the colours still looked dirty (even in dark scenes)
it's absoultely a major improvement from even the masterpiece video and im quite content but it just seems that it would ahve come out better if they had a couple more months before the editors deadline. the sounds is also nothing overly special like the newer films but it's very good for a 1942 movie!
overall, i love my Bambi DVD
oh! and mine did have the tabs that snap the slipcover together...not velcro but whatever else they make them with...

This DVD was the first time I have seen Bambi as an adult, and I was amazed at how wonderful the movie is. It's like a painting and symphony rolled into one package! All of the artwork is great, but I have to call attention to that great multiplane opening shot.
Of course, it's the characters that get the bulk of the attention, and they deserve it. The main trio of Bambi, Thumper, and Flower are so endearing and adorable, and the supporting characters all have their special bit of charm.
I liked almost all of the extra features, especially the Story Meetings reenactment and the documentary.
This is a must-own for just about any movie fan. A+

I think they did a pretty good job restoring it however I wish they would of kept the glitches.
It was really interesting how they made the movie in general. For instance using the multiplanner what-cha-majig and what not, it just blew me away how they made that movie. That's how they should make the new midqueal.
It was also interesting to find out that Fred Sheilds the guy who does the voice of the Great Prince of the Forest was the guy who annonced over the radio the crash of the Zeplen(but that wasn't in the DVD). And Cammie King who was in "Gone with the Wind" I thought that was pretty cool too. Also how they just pulled kids from the streets(as a way of saying it) to do the voices.

I know I said “I’m going to post my comments on the DVD” about a month ago, hehe, but better later than never.
Being a Platinum Edition, I thought it was simpler compared to the other titles in the collection. Now, that doesn’t mean it is inferior to the past DVDs. Actually, it is one of the best, if not the most substantial. I wonder if the producers actually had a shorter deadline to work on this title, since the menus don’t show that such a big effort was spent on them as we’re usually used (they’re not even in 5.1, opposed to the other platinums) and the bonus features are more straightforward than usual. Something that may prove my theory is that, if you pay attention to the bonus features, they actually make use restored footage from the movie, while other DVDs always use the unrestored footage – which shows that the extras were produced after the restoration on the film had already been completed.
I could rant that Disney hasn’t researched very deep in the vaults to find other deleted scenes (we know there are many) or more art material and theatrical trailers, but what’s included is so good that it is enough to make leave any Disney fan with a big smile on the face. “Inside Walt’s Story Meetings” is one of the best extras ever included on a Disney DVD, showing us the creative process of the movie not after it’s already been release, but during the production itself, which is quite fascinating. As fantastic as it is, I still think the traditional audio commentary shouldn’t be dropped from the next releases, since they usually give us an up-to-date perspective on the movie and lots of interesting trivia that can’t be found on the “Story Meetings” feature. Here’s hope that the next Platinum editions will include both.

I understand when people say it doesn’t look as “clean” as “Alice” or “Snow White”, but I think that was a creative decision so the movie would look truer to its origins and not something that has come out of the CAPS system.
What has really impressed me is how great the movie sounds. Terry Porter has done a wonderful restoration job on this one, giving us a soundtrack that has great life and fidelity but is absolutely true to its origins. I was really surprised and overjoyed by how good the score sounds, surrounding us from all the channels and really heightening the emotional impact of the movie. And it sounds like a true stereo-recorded score, not an overly-processed mono re-recorded track. Most impressive!

Bambi is an amazing film on its own but now with its new quality video & audio and the hours of bonus features it just go even better. Everything about this movie is great, and now you can enter even more into the erra of Walt Disney and his earlier masterpieces with all the bonus material. This is one of my favorite Disney films! It has great animation and alot of memorable characters I could relate to.
As for the DVD. WOW! I actually thought it was better than The Incredible's DVD. I loved all the great interviews(especially seeing alot of great Disney legends)! Overall along with Monster's Inc. and Snow White this has to be the best Disney DVD ever!
