What Would Be a Great Disney Animated Classic?

Just curious... I know which I'd choose, but I'm wondering what everyone else would be most interested in seeing. I know some or most of these have been thought about at Disney before, but have never made it into the schedule.

Have fun, and feel free to suggest other options!

I think The Frog Prince, would be an interesting Disney movie. In a way, instead of the prince saving the princess, she would be saving him instead, like in Beauty and the Beast...

I don't see how any of those could be Disney Classics. Disney should start making their own stories. Does Pixar base their movies on old tales? No, and they have great success in all of their features. Disney is capable of making great classics, and I think that they have done most of the great stories already into animation. I'm still waiting for Disney to bring the great years of achievement: Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and of course the great Lion King.

I had to choose the Bremen Town Musicians, because I lived in Bremen for a while and am more familiar with that story than some of the others. I think it would be a nice foundation for a feature length film. A lot of business would need to be added, but that could also be a lot of fun.

Any of these could easily be Disney films. Sometimes we think that Disney's already turned the best of the classic stories into animated films. What we forget is that the stories were rarely as great as the Disney artists made them. I would guess most of us love the Little Mermaid because of what Disney did with it... not because of the original story that it was based on. The same could probably be said for The Jungle Book, Pinocchio, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and so many other Disney classics. We think Disney chose great stories when in many cases they just made great stories out of good ones.

Also, Pixar has based a film on a classic story... A Bug's Life was clearly inspired by "The Grasshopper and the Ants." Pixar's playing to their own strength. I think that Disney clearly has a knack for fairy tails... I'd like to see them get back to something like their classics.

I have to agree with stlewis75 on this one. Out of all the Disney classics, only about 5 were original stories. There's something to be said for updating the classic tales. They tend to speak to people on a very basic level.

I have no problem creating new content for films, but the titles listed above share space on my dream list.

Even many of the original stories that have been made into films share some elements with tried and true stories. For example, Lion King draws from Shakespeare, and Toy Story explores many of the same issues as The Velveteen Rabbit.

The Frog Prince gets my vote. Personally, I think it would need a bit of expanding (as it's very short and contains no real villain), but if brought to life correctly, I think that it could start a new golden age in Disney Animation (plus it'd make mega-bucks as it's a princess movie and almost every woman/girl would go and see it).

EDIT: By the way, what's East of the Sun, West of the Moon? Is that a sci-fi story?

I agree... Most fairy tales would require more story added to them to make a feature. I'm quite interested with the results of this poll so far.

East of the Sun, West of the Moon is fairy tale. Most versions are a the size of a short book, between 60-100 pages. It's an interesting and unique sort of story. If you like fantasy, you should see if your library has a copy... You may enjoy it.

What about Aladdin? I know Aladdin wasn't technically a prince, but neither was Belle or Cinderella, right?

o yea but Aladdin wasn't a prince.

but he did turn into one..later.
but belle and cinderella are "classified" as Disney Princesses!

I think the prince angle hasn't been explored as much as the princess angle, definitely. I wouldn't worry, though. I'm sure an adaption of "Frog Prince" would have a princess in it, too.

So, to all the people who are voting for Frog Prince, would you want it to be a classic musical style? (Maybe with Alan Menken songs?)

Yep. I wouldn't have the songs in the same way as in Beauty and the Beast, though. I'd make them leaning a bit closer to pop music like in Mulan.

Frog Prince could work. So could Rapunzel, but only if they move away from the stupid Squirrel and Basset Hound thing. What I would really like to see, though, is another action/adventure animated classic in the vein of Mulan. There are so many legends from around the world that haven't been tapped yet. I'd love to see something set in feudal Japan, for instance, or Scandinavia.

Oh absolutely! That would be great. Those two movies really stand out among the stuff they have done recently. I'll never forget the first time I saw Beauty and the Beast on the big screen. I was blown away. I want more of that kinda stuff.

Anyhoo, I think any of those films could be done by Disney, given the right story and characters, I am sure that they couldall be classics.

What I would really love to see would be Disney Toon Studios given a big budget and then they could do one in 2D properly!
