Answered my own question about Mel Gibson and Pocahontas II

Post by quiden »

I don't know if anyone else will find this interesting, but when I recently watched Pocahontas II, I was surprised at how much John Smith sounded like Mel Gibson, then when I saw on the credits that the voice was done by Donal Gibson, I thought, "A-ha! It's a secret name! He doesn't want to be recognized as doing a direct to video project!"

So I checked on IMDB.com (one of my most used sites) and found out that Donal Gibson is actually Mel Gibson's younger brother. Hence the similar sounding voice.

So, I was wrong, but I was close! I guess.

Don't worry, you weren't the only one who thought that. I knew that it sounded slightly different, but I was almost sure it was Mel. Then I found out it wasn't. They sure do sound alot alike.

I remember when it first came out they had a promo on the Disney channel and they said how they couldn't get Mel Gibson and they got his brother. I remember thinking that was so cool.

I saw that special too... I think. I knew about it since its release too and I saw it on TV on the Family Channel so it probably was the same special. :)

Don't feel bad. I thought Eddie Murphy did the voice of Mushu in Mulan II. I knew it was some other guy but I kept thinking it was Eddie Murphy. Don't know why. Mel has alot of Brothers. The show Complete Savages was based on him and his family growing up.
Dragon, not lizard. I don't do that tongue thing.

Didn't a similar thing happen with Woody on the Buzz Lightyear movie? Tom Hanks' brother was cheaper to work with, LOL!

I think the guy who played Mushu on Mulan 2 did a good job on sounding like Eddie Murphy

WHAT?!?! I never even noticed! :o Speaking of Lion King II and voice work, I thought Matthew Broderick was singing "We Are One" but it wasn't. The guy who did sing it was really good.

Anyhow, for Mulan II, I knew it wasn't Eddie Murphy but sometimes I forgot it wasn't him and didn't even care. Mark Moseley (I think that's his name) did a great job and really became Mushu. I understand with Genie that it was a little TOO different, but it still seemed like the character Genie, but just a second one. I think it was the same guy in Return of Jafar in the tv series so I got used to a new Genie. Does that make sense? lol.

I thought it was Matthew Broderick too, but it was Cam Clarke, who I know from the old Ninja Turtles cartoon and Snoopy's singing voice. He has also done a lot of other stuff though. Yeah, he did a really good job. That's one of my favorite disney songs.

I never knew about Donal Gibson, though, I barely paid attention to the movie when I saw it on Toon Disney. I don't like it too much. I think it's funny though that they used Mel's brother .

I don't mind the voice change of the Genie but then again I'm not a huge fan of the Genie as moist people seem to be. The Genie's voice in 'Return of Jafar' and the tv series was performed by Dan Castellaneta who is better known as the voice of Homer Simpson! (...and Krusty... and BArney... and so on and so on...) :)

I didn't know about the guy who voices Homer Simpson voicing Genie in Return of Jafar for a looooooooong time. I swear I even thought that he voiced Genie for the TV series! But this is coming from the girl who was completely oblivious to the fact that the street vendor in the beginning of the Aladdin movie was also done by Robin Williams. d:

Naturally, I thought John Smith in Pocahontas II was voiced by Mel Gibson, but then again the last time I saw the dreck-to-video was when it first came out on video... I only saw it once and never saw it again too.

Hm, usually I'm quite good with recognizing voices. I don't know why Disney leaves me floored every time.
Wherever. Whatever. Have a nice day.
