Do you object to religious discussions on this forum?

Post by Wonderlicious »

I've just been taking a little look at past threads on the Off Topic forum, and the most controversial ones or the ones that have the most arguments in them are the religious ones. This got me wondering, should we actually have religious discussions on this board? I'm also talking about topics concerning moral issues in general.

Personally, I tend to disagree with them. My religion is like the weather (My beliefs change day by day from being religious to non religious to religious again) and I'm okay with people hearing about that, as long as they don't attack me for it, thus providing a nice atmosphere as we don't fight. However, a lot of these religious topics end up in fights and seem to provide a negative feeling in this forum. Therefore, I tend to disagree with them. I'm fine with non shouting at people ethical topics like this, but when they lead to noisy arguments, that's when I get annoyed.

Plus, we're on a Disney forum, and we're supposed to be talking about Disney...

I'm not on here all that much but I guess I'll give my opinion anyway. I don't see anything wrong with discussing all different kinds of religons, just so long as it stays civil. I personaly like hearing other peoples beliefs, and telling about mine, but I don't think it's right to put people down for the way they belive even if you don't agree with them. If there was away to have a good discussion on different religions without people hurting other people's feelings, then that's great.

I'd have to say yes and no. But I did vote yes. Being around the message boards a lot, most religious discussions turn to mud-slinging. We all have our passionate beliefs. And nothing is more passionate then religion. I do join in now and then depending if they interest me and if I feel I must defend myself or someone else, but in the end, they usually turn into hate-mongering.

I'm mixed on the situation. Religious debates can be very enlightening and interesting, but they do have the tendency to get rather nasty or just dragged out to the point of weariness. So far I feel the religious debates on this board have been handled very maturely, and my only complaint with them is that they went on way too long (the debate between Aaron and Loomis went on for like a month, didn't it?). Still, I like the peace the board's been having lately with no debating. I guess I'm one of those people who likes debates in small doses just once in a while.

I don't object but I doubt I'll be in very many conversations since I'm not religious. I like to learn about all of the religions but I'm not one for talking about them too much. They can get boring after a while. If people want to start one I say go ahead but I don't run this place. :)

I don't object to religious discussions at all, especially seeing how most of them here in the past have been handled so well. I do agree with Disneykid that sometimes they go on for a bit too long (Loomis-Aaron) but they seem to cause no harm. If we can talk about things like Star Trek and Nickelodeon on this "Disney" forum, then why not religion? Providing that it continues to be handled in a civilized manner of course.

Well Satoshi pretty much summed up my feelings, so nothing to add.

Besides Luke and his fine team of moderators do a great job. Not sure it is really appropriate for us to tell Luke how to run his site.

As Linus would say, I've learned there are three things you don't discuss with people: religion, politics and the Great Pumpkin.

For myself, I'd answer with a resounding yes. Why?

1) The topic is usually inherently poised to offend someone involved.
2) I find it difficult to get across what I'm trying to say concerning my beliefs in a message board setting.
3) I come on the internet to have fun, not to get caught up in debating my personal beliefs.

So over all, I find religous debates to be frustrating messes - and pointless ones, at that, as I'm confident of my beliefs and I would find it kind of ridiculous if I were to defend them from someone over the internet. If other people want to do it, I don't care. But you never see me involved with them.

i think...maybe yes, maybe no..but more on the yes side.
People have different beliefs ya know and sometimes some one can take something out of context and there would be a huge debate and so on and so on...

I'm religious, but I don't feel it's necessary to discuss religion or its issues... especially on a forum like this.

I personally don't mind religious debates and even enjoy joining in from time to time, but I've been involved in a few of them in other forums and someone always ends up getting hurt, personally attacked, heavily offended, etc.

Take that as you will, I guess.
Wherever. Whatever. Have a nice day.

Religious discussion is just as applicable in this "Off-Topic" forum as any other, well, off-topic subjects. If a thread turns into a flame war, close it. That doesn't mean every single one should be outlawed. That's a tad exteme, isn't it? If a thread where people argue whether "Alice in Wonderland" is better than "Cinderella" (I'd be on the 'yes' side, by the way  ), and it turns into a flame war, should we just say that comparison of classic Disney films is taboo? Of course not.

I don't object to religious discussions (I started the infamous Passion of the Christ thread), but as long as they stay discussions, and don't turn into on-line fist-fights.

If sanity would prevail when the topic of religion comes up, I would say its okay, but there are so many people who have so many outlooks on what or who God is, it is hard to have a sane discussion.

I voted against this particular topic. Two things in life I don't discuss are politics, and religion. I am a Christian, and I have my own beliefs and never try to push them off on others. But I will defend my Lord and Savior to the end if I have to.

This is a Disney forum, and I think we should leave Religious beliefs and political stands out of it.

I'm yes and no on this topic. On the one hand, Religion can be a very interesting topic and can spur some great conversations. But on the other, people out there do take things to heart and get offended easily. Then all out virtual war takes place because of one's opinion on a view. Religion is a touchie subject to discuss on.
