Disney Hits $1 billion at US box office

Disney becomes first Hollywood studio to hit 1 billon dollars at box office
"Walt Disney Co.'s summer kids blockbusters "Finding Nemo" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" have helped make the Hollywood studio the first to hit the one billion dollar mark at the box office.

Studio officials on Tuesday reported hitting the coveted one billion dollar mark in North American ticket receipts faster than any other year in the entertainment giant's history. "

.... The studio's animated fish flick "Nemo" -- made in conjunction with Pixar -- has become the year's highest-grossing movie overall, with 320 million dollars in ticket sales so far.

It remains in the US and Canadian top 10 after nearly three months in theatres and has seen its grosses drop a mere 12 percent last weekend.

And Johnny Depp (news)'s "Pirates" has become a surprise blockbuster with a shot at surpassing "The Matrix Reloaded" to become the summer's second-highest-grossing film.

It has earned 209.5 million dollars during one month of release and had a marginal drop-off of just 19 percent last weekend.

I'm filled with excitement. Disney is back in the movie Spot Light. My only fear now is that POTC and Nemo are kind of a tough act to have to follow. Brother Bear looks cute as hell but i dont know. I believe Nemo and POTC kinda rekindled the spark for use to be Disney enthusists and it also brought on a whole new band of fans. So now the bar has been raised and fans are gonna expect the same magic from every upcomming movie. Granted Disney will always have us faithfuls, but by taking the chances they did w/ POTC they've open up a flood gate to a new generation of fans. 8)

Well of coarse Brother Bear will be cool for all us Dizzz fanatics. My concern is will the new wave of fan like it. Not that i care what they think anyways. But as far as the profit margin will go for Disney it kinda is a concern. Put it this way the better Diz does the more benifits we reap as collectors and fans.

Oh believe me, I realize that! But what is even more important here is, is that Brother Bear makes a big profit. If it doesn't, the chances of traditional animation surviving at Disney will become even slimmer. All we need is one big hit here and I think it can be saved, but this film HAS to make money. That is why I have been urging everyone at this board to see it opening weekend. Not only that, but we all need to encourage our friends, neighbors, classmates, co-workers, etc to go see it as well. Inform them if they don't an artform WILL die out!

Absolutely. Of coarse this is another concern. I do believe that a lot of animation fans of any sort are not aware of how traditional animation is hanging on only by a thread. We've been totally spoiled by CGI. Its true. Even my 2 yr old favors the Pixar Disney movies over most of the classics. True its a "Whole new World" (yeah that pun was intended)LOL But i hope to encourage others to try to remeber where it all began.

This wasn't worth starting a new thread for, but I thought I'd mention:
Disney's domination of the box-office continues.

According to <a href="http://www.dvdfile.com/news/sales_stati ... index.html"> DVDFile's Box Office Report </a> :
Freaky Friday...fell less than 50 percent, grossing another $13.1 million....with [Freaky Friday] shaping up to be the breakout hit of the summer amid Oscar buzz for the once-scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis. And nipping at the heels of The Matrix Reloaded's place as the top two grosser of the year is Pirates of the Caribbean, which snagged another $8.2 million and now stands just shy of $250 million total. It's gonna be a photo-finish...
This means Freaky Friday (at #4) has made 57.9m so far, and PotC (#6) has made 247.0m.
Spy Kids 3 (#9) also made 5.2 million, bringing it to a total of 96.8m.

Looks like Disney are doing quite well for themselves.

I suspect they will make other movies :P
