is this Irony?
No, just a coincidence. ;)

Random thought: It bothers me to not see the studio take advantage of releasing more catalogue shorts with these platinum editions. Its not a big deal but I still think it should be a set standard that all Platinum and SE releases should contain one bonus animated Disney short from the same year of release. Why not..? Theres certainly room on disc. Since Disney likes tomarket these as being so special and only deserving of two releases per year and moratorium and the works... they should put in every bit of effort to round these off.

This set is going to have the 1937 short "The Old Mill" on it. That wasn't included in the original press release, but it will be there. Did you want more in addition to that?

Thanks for the link, Joe. It excites me that I am getting to the point where I can read non-textbook French and understand at least the bulk of it. I have to say that I'm not all that dazzled by the screencaps from the film itself, though, but the menus look great.

As the DVD has been released in England two weeks earlier than in the US, I have the DVD on my hands and can comment on it in case you wanted to know about it before Luke posts his review.

The video of the movie is, as cliched as it sounds, really good. There were little signs of grain, dust etc and the colours looked vivid and fresh. I'm pretty sure that they fixed the vanishing racoon (the one that disappears on the little island after the fire), but apart from that, we don't have a Lion King job here. Oh, and they added restoration credits at the end.

I personally listened to the mono track, not the 5.1 mix, which is a better option for people with non-surround systems (like me :(). In my opinion, it seems a bit better than the 5.1 mix, as the mono track was as the film was meant to be heard.

The extras is something I haven't totally tackled, but I'll give my opinion on the ones that I've seen so far. The Making of Bambi: A Prince is Born is very good. At times, it can seem a bit fluffy with animators saying "Bambi is the greatest movie ever ever ever!", but apart from that, it provides an excellent insight into the making of the movie. The Disney Time Capsule is also very interesting, as it provides a generally entertaining look at life and animation in 1942. The Original Theatrical Trailer is a nice inclusion, although Disney should really have included some more trailers from reissues like they did for Snow White and Alice in Wonderland. The Art of Bambi galleries are nice, although the character design ones past Bambi himself are a bit thin.

Overall, I think that this is going to be a great set, but not as good as Aladdin or Snow White platinums.

Can you please tell us how it sounds? The DEHT sounds promising and I can't wait to try it in my home theater.

I didn't listen to the 5.1 mix, just the mono mix as I don't have a surround sound system yet and didn't want to lose any sounds.

Well, what can I say? Patrick Stewart is as magnificent as always. He has such a distinctive voice his a natural choice for the Great Prince. And it's fun to see Andreas Deja and some of the Australian studio animators discussing how excited they are to be working on Bambi. And what animation and effects you see too. Some of the scenes do look stunning. As for the story, it sounds like it will address the pain of death or disruption in families and end on a postive note, and therefore be a help to children themselves who are going through the same events, either through parent's death or divorce, as Bambi is. Which can only be a good thing right?

Oh, you don't want to know about the sequel? You want to know about Bambi itself. Well, its a film from the early 40's. How can anyone today be interested in that?

Well i live in the UK and got my copy today and theres abit of a story about it really lol!
Ok so i went to Asda to get my copy and they didnt have the slipcover, and i had been told there was one by some and wasnt by others so i thought maybe there isnt one. So anyway i brought it and then strolled into WHSmiths and saw that they had slipcovers :o :o :o
I could of walked back to Asda and got a refund but since i payed with my solo card i guessed it would take a while for the money to go back onto the card and so that would mean i couldnt get Bambi for another week. So i just had to have the slipcover, so i was naughty and found a spare slipcover and slipped it into my bag with my dvd. I know its really really bad....lol!!

But anyway, i have just watched Bambi and loved it!!!! :D I havent seen Bambi for at least 10 years and couldnt remember a single thing. They really did do a great job restoring it all and i was really impressed with how it looks. I havent looked at the bonus stuff yet i'll probably do that when im really bored. The menus are nice. And you also get a preview of Chicken Little which i was chuffed about as you could see the animation alot better than having to watch it on the computer. And when they shown the credits for those that worked on the restoration and they made them fit in perfectly with the credits at the start of the film which were the originals! But theres only one insert which shows the dvds, and is quite boring! What happened to the insert book sort of thing like Aladdin had? and the Discover disney dvd insert? GRRRRR!! Anyway im glad its part of my collection, such an amazing film!!!

I detect a bit of sarcasm. Just a bit, though. ;)

Right. I was joking a bit about the Bambi II sneek preview, but everybody who knocks sequels should watch this preview. Patrick Stewart says had he not thought it lived up to the Bambi legacy, he wouldn't have taken part. And Patrick's OK is good enough for me! (Ignore his OK for Star Trek Nemesis - everyone has their off day).

I've flicked through a few of the second disc's supplements. So here we go.

Restoring Bambi
Introduced by Patrick Stewart (who seems a little uncomfortable in places). I'm not 100% the work comes 100% under restoration, but it shows whats been done. Oh, and Patrick takes particular time to call the release "Platinum Edition" - I'd like to think that this is a special shout out to all of Ultimate Disney's members!

Sneak Peek: Bambi and the Great Prince of the Forest
Well, I've written about this, but it looks like my sequel defence may soon be vindicated in the eyes of more people.

Picture Galleries
The galleries are a little small again, and the layout seem scrappy. Still, its always good to see them. And Renata Bambi's mom does get a gallery (even though she shares it with his pop)

However the auto-slideshow is interesting. You can play it with speech or without. Unlike other art reviews, its not a movie, but the still images automatically flip themselves after a few seconds.

1942 Review
This is quite odd. I was expecting this to be like those found on the Vault Disney discs. But it doesn't really cover Disney and Disney films much at all. It gives a wide ranging overview of 1942 as a year, rather than a Disney year.

I also put the "What season are you" game on, and found out I was Winter. Who would have guessed?

Two new reviews with screen caps!
One from the Netherlands: http://www.dvd.nl//reviews.php?reviewid=1887
And one from Spain: http://www.zonadvd.com/modules.php?name ... +Especial)

It seems that, contrary to what was done to "Mary Poppins", the Enhanced track of "Bambi" is faithful to the original source. The involvement of Terry Porter explains it all, hehe.

I just bought this, the mexican edition has arrived this week too, so this are my thoughts:

It looks like the cover is the same for every country out of the USA, that one with the big bambi head (same as UK)...

the image is beautiful, yes, but the restoration work didn´t get to the Snow White or Alice´s levels. There are moments where the image quality is gorgeous, but some other moments you can easily see grain a dust.

I haven´t seen this movie in ages!!, so it was really great to me, to remember some of the scenes and songs from my little old cassette my aunt gave for my 6th birthday, auuuuhh!!!!

You can tell this is a platinum edition because of the 3D enviroments and that CGI forest of course is here! specially in the games, actually this time I found some of them a little hard :o

The virtual forest is not an adventure ala Timón & Pumba´s virtual safari like a thought, it is more like those vistual aquariums in the Finding Nemo DVD, of course, is not the same to have a really cool CGI watertank in you living room, thatn a prety simple drawing of a tree, with snow fallinf or flowers, but, but is nice anyway...

The Making of documentary is really great, but the walt discussion on disc one is absolutely awesome!!, the best disney dvd feature ever!! ...

Thanks for your remarks on the disc Wonderlicious, PheR, Netty and Andy! You are so lucky for getting this disc earlier... Here in Brazil they've decided to postpone "Bambi" from March to a still-to-be-decided release date, probably to make room for "The Incredibles" and make sure its sales are huge (it was the top grossing animated feature EVER here in Brazil).
I can't stand all the waiting, so I'll be getting the region 1 edition... of course, the nicer booklet and sleepcover are a big bonus :D (hmm, but I still think the American cover is awful... but you can't have everything, can you?)

I'm finishing up with one DVD that's coming out next Tuesday, and then will be devoting all my reviewing powers to <i>Bambi</i>! If all works out right, there should be something cool (besides a review) next week on the site. Fingers crossed!
