Yes, the media likes to buy their films in October. If Diseny released The Little MErmaid (the origional) in March on 2-Disc Disney DVD Platium Edition, they (media=people) might be kind of upset and not buy it!!!

I'm absolutely DELIGHTED that this is the next Platinum release!! I bought the limited wide-screen vhs of "Lady and the Tramp" when it came out...this was their very first Cinemascope picture and amazingly, some bright spark there at Mousehouse thought it would be a nice idea to show the folks back home what the film was SUPPOSED to look like ( this was before they'd released any films on DVD)...it even had a nice "Making Of" short film at the"tail" end (no pun intended...woof!) and it was dazzling. Needless to say, this has the potential to be a really nice package for a "nice" little movie...is that what someone called it? Pardon moi, my darling, but this wonderful gem of a film kicks Ariel's arse left right and center when it comes to sheer artistry, storyline and ESPECIALLY music! " The Siamese Cat Song", " He's a Tramp" " La Belle Note"...these songs are so good that any one of them could stand on their own without even being associated with a Disney film! Sorry to say but all these half-baked-musicals-disguised-as-animated films from the "Second Golden Age" don't even come close to that level of excellence. They were an intregal part of the story itself, they moved the plot along seemlessly without feeling that they were just thrown in for the sake of "Wow! Let's stick a catchy song here for the hell of it!" type feeling you get with "Mermaid" as well as "Lion King". Don't get me wrong...I love" Lion King" and think "Mermaid"'s pretty decent, but I could never tolerate the "bustin' out for Broadway" woo-woo feel that always seemed to stop the entire story cold just for the sake of a catchy tune...and not ALL of them were catchy! I hope they go all out for this film...it truly deserves the royal treatment.

Oh, did I mention that all the songs for "Lady" were written AND performed by Peggy Lee? Not too shabby.

Lady & The Tramp as the next platnium. I think I'm having my "Homer Simpson sees donuts" moment. The "mmmmmmmmmmm donuts...." kind of thing. Same thing happens to me when there's DVDs I want.

I am so excited about LatT being released in fall. However i still miss TLM. I am huge fans of both the movies. I do however have a question, Is there a possibility that 101 Dalmatians will be released October 2006, because it would be the movies 45th anniversary, and it's animated sequel would have been oop for 5 years, and it is the anniversary of the live action movie. Is this even a possibility????

I'm quite excited for Lady and the Tramp!! It's one of my childhood favorites; plus I'm just an animal nut. I'm especially looking forward to seeing it in widescreen, as I've never seen it in its original aspect ratio.

I was stunned when I finally saw Sleeping Beauty in widescreen when it came out on DVD, so I hope LatT won't disappoint!

Guess I'll have to make do with the widescreen tape...gee, that's sooo upsetting...NOT! Think next to "Bambi" (champing at bit waiting for dvd!!!) this is my favourite. There's some incredibly beautiful work here..the one scene where Lady's singing to herself "What's a baby anyway?", sitting on the staircase landing with that gorgeous stained glass window above her...the lushness of color and richness of mood it conveys still gives me goosebumps every time I see it. My husband loves it too...he's not a big animation fan, but I finally set him down to watch it and boy, what a convert! He loved it so much that we even had "The Siamese Cat Song" on our answering machine! This film is pure gold.

Hey, what exactly is the rare academy version, anyway?

I'm really excited about this. This movie was the first Disney pre-record I ever owned, and it has some special memories for me. My mom and dad had taken me to it the year before in its last theatrical release back in '86. It was Dad's all-time favorite Disney movie. Dad didn't always show his softer side, but this movie always brought it out. I haven't been able to watch it again since he passed away last year.

I got it on DVD a few years back to have it in widescreen and was a bit disappointed. Some of the soundtrack was missing and one or two scenes were colored wrong. What the heck happened? I hope this will be fixed. I can afford to patient for TLM if this is the film that precedes it.

Hey, what exactly is the rare academy version, anyway?

Someone can go into greater detail, but <i>Lady and the Tramp</i> was shot twice. Once in Cinemascope and once recomposited for 1.37:1 Academy Ratio. Kind of like what Pixar does for their films, only this was the old-fashioned way - no digital worlds created and adjusted, but rephotographing the entire a film.

Unfortunately, almost every 1.33:1 version of the film that has been released on home video has been a pan-and-scan of the 2.35:1 and not the original Academy Ratio version, which one would assume looks a lot better and isn't technically reformatted, but an alternate version of the original film.

I am excited about both releases equally.
However, I think that Mermaid and Lady both suffered from terrible DVD transfers the first time around,
and in my opinion, Mermaid looked worse than Lady.
Therefore, I think it's great that Mermaid is coming out later,
becuase maybe technology will be more advanced, so that the restoration work will be even better than that of Lady's.
By the way...does anyone know where I could get more information about the ACADAMY version of Lady and the Tramp on Laserdisc?

I sure hope they will include it on the DVD...

But then again, they've never had a platinum edition with a fulscreen transfer before! But on the other hand, they've never had one with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio before!

Well, shoot, am I remembering wrong? I pulled my DVD out to get another look at it, and I couldn't find the coloring mistake nor the missing audio. Now that I think about it, I did buy a widescreen VHS back in '98 since I knew it was a cinemascope film and because I didn't get a DVD player for another two years. I'm probably just confusing those two versions. I can't believe I almost forgot about that; I gave it to my neices when I upgraded to the DVD. I did hang on to my 1987 VHS, and it doesn't have either of these problems.

Still, I'm confused as to why the color was off in that sequence in the first place.

On another note, I'm rather surprised that they would bother with making a pan & scan version when the "academy version" was already available!

Acording to this review from DVDLaser, the only bonus feature on the LD was a four-minute clip with composer Peggy Lee, extracted from a Disneyland TV show ("The Story of Dogs", I think).

I'm not that into the dogs/cats films, although "Lady and the Tramp" is a wonderful film. Of-course, my most anticipated release is "The Little Mermaid". I still can't believe we have to wait more than a year and a half for it to be released
