Favorite Actors?

Post by Marianne81 »

I was curious 1) Who are everyone’s favorite actors? And 2) What do they have to do in order for you to call them a Favorite. For me to call them a favorite they have to be in at least 2 movies I REALLY LOVE, I must admire their acting skills and ability to play different roles convincingly, and I am consistently moved or impressed by their work. I may be young but don’t expect me to say I love Josh Hartnett and Ben Afflek because they’re so cute. They have to have more than looks to impress me. I have many favs from today and from the past. For right now I’m only listing actors. Maybe in a few days we can do Fav actresses. Here they are in no particular order.
From Today:
Tom Hanks: He plays every role so good in my opinion that I forget it’s him. That is what a good actor is supposed to do. I love so many of his movies-You’ve Got Mail, Apollo 13, That Thing You Do, A League Of Their Own, Sleepless in Seattle. And even though his two Oscar roles are not really movies I necessarily liked a lot, I certainly thought he did a great job in them.

Ewan McGregor: Stars Wars Episode 1&2, Moulin Rouge, Down With Love. Talk about different roles and he did them all well. I think he’s very talented and very underrated.

Harrison Ford: I will always love him because he’s Han Solo and Indiana Jones. He can be very funny and very serious and I like that.

Sean Astin: No other actor has made me cry as much as him. That may sound strange, but he has consistently moved me in his movies. I put on Rudy the other day and it seemed like I was crying every two minutes. Maybe I’m a little over emotional but it’s a Great film a fantastic performance. And there have been scenes in FOTR and TTT with Sam that choked me up. But what I love most about him is can also make me laugh. And who doesn’t love The Goonies. I think he’s very endearing and again very underrated.

Elijah Wood: I have always like him ever since he was Huck Finn. I haven’t seen a lot of his movies, so I think the fact that we are basically the same age (he is 11 months older than I am), and his natural talent that has made me admire him. The Lord of the Rings has made him and many other the other actors in them great fans out of me. I can’t imagine anyone else but Elijah as Frodo. Plus he does have the most beautiful eyes and is able to show a great deal of emotion with them.

Orlando Bloom: I loved in him Pirates and Lord of the Rings. He reminds me of Errol Flynn in that respect. I think he will get better as time goes on and look forward to seeing him grow as an actor. And I hope people will talk about that more than his Heartthrob status.

Hugh Jackman: Ok so I have only seen two movies with him (Kate and Leopold and X-Men) but he was great in two extremely different roles. I also heard that he had been on Broadway in Beauty and the Beast and Oklahoma. Anyone who does that is ok in my book.

Other actors from today I like are Johnny Depp (especially after Pirates), Gary Sinese, Leonardo DeCaprio and Denzel Washington.

From the past:

Gene Kelly: I can’t think of a movie with him I don’t love. Whenever I need to smile I put on Singin’ in the Rain. I love to watch him dance, but he was also a very good actor although that’s not mentioned much.

Jimmy Stewart: He was so natural and could make me cry and laugh. He was good even in movies that were not very good. But I love The Shop Around the Corner, Vertigo, Rear Window, and so many more.

Russ Tamblyn: Played Riff in West Side Story and also Tom Thumb and both convincingly. He is great fun to watch.

Gregory Peck: I love him in Roman Holiday, To Kill A Mockingbird and many others. He had a wonderful presence and great eyes. Again I admire those who a show great emotion with their eyes.

Cary Grant: Well I think everybody loves him. I love Father Goose.

Van Johnson: He was in so many different kinds of movies during his career from musical with Esther Williams to great wars movies like Battleground and I love everyone
I’ve seen.

I also like Humphrey Bogart, Louis Jourdan, Howard Keel, Donald O’Connor, and Dean Jones for his Disney Films.
Sorry for such a long post. I look forward to hearing what are others' favorites.

James Stewart, Tom Hanks, Harrison Ford, Al Pacino, Bruce Willis, to name a few. Simply because I enjoy watching them. Well, Pacino simply because The Godfather is my favorite drama, which brings to mind Marlon Brando as well, and he also did terrific in On The Waterfront. Pretty much all the oldies everyone else thinks of besides the extraordinary Stewart; Grant, Bogart, Welles (Exceptional, even though I've only seen two of his films). I love Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Bill Murray. They were the best of the 20th century, just under the Marx Brothers and Monty Python (John, Terry, Terry, Michael, Graham, and Eric). My, I've named quite a few. Someone should start a post for actresses. I'm too tired to do so.
What would this wretched world be like without Disney?

Some of my favorites.

Bill Murray - He's probably the funniest man alive - he has the best comic timing and delivery of any actor I've seen and he's a GREAT actor, too, not just funny. Over the past 25 years, he's made a number of my favorites.

Robert De Niro - Well he's had a fair number of misfires recently, but he's without a doubt, able to elevate material that in the hands of others would be mediocre to something excellent. And in spite of what you might think, he's got great comedy skills, too. He did a good job in Meet the Parents, but for an even better comedic performance, go back 15 years to "Midnight Run" - it's a classic. Of course, his '70s work is just an amazing opus of work - Mean Streets, Godfather II, Taxi Driver, Bang the Drum Slowly...there's probably a single-digit number of films he's been in that I don't care for, rather remarkable for someone who's been in at least 50 films.

Tom Hanks - Here's another actor who knows how to pick a film - he hasn't been in a truly bad movie in over a decade. My favorite film of his (excluding the Toy Storys) is Big, which is such a wonderful movie, and really shows off both of his skills - the comedy and the drama. I still consider it his best performance, all these years and awards later. I did enjoy some of his other '80s comedies like The Money Pit and Splash, but he's seemed to have moved completely to drama, and with success. He was in two of the best films of last year playing against type, he single-handedly carried "Cast Away". Just a great talent.

Without going into as much detail...
Other Modern Day Actors I Like:
Al Pacino - Like De Niro, he had a hell of a decade in the '70s. Unfortunately, since then, his films have been a mixed bag, with some noteworthy highs in the early '90s.
Robert Duvall

More comedy...
Tim Allen
Adam Sandler
Michael J. Fox
Chevy Chase

From the Past:
Jimmy Stewart
Joseph Cotten
Gregory Peck
Paul Newman (well, he's still acting and was good in Road to Perdition, but it's really his work in the '60s and '70s that I love)

Edit: While I posted, Sulley posted, and I'm now reminded of others - I like Harrison Ford, and Bruce Willis and Steve Martin (even if it's been quite some time since he's done a film I cared for)...and Brando. Actresses, off the top of my head, Sigourney Weaver, Susan Sarandon, Gwenyth Paltrow.

Oh, and Alec Guiness and John Candy.

So you'd be looking forward to Return of the King then, Marianne? :P

Never really had too many "faves" but some I can think of that I always enjoy watching are:

Past:
-Jimmy Stewart: he has cropped up in this thread a bit. Easy to see why. One of the most likeable screen presences ever; Cary Grant; ach!...can't think of any more right now...Have more favourite movies than actors.

More recently Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Michael J Fox (just can't imagine Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly...), Jason Lee, Luis Guzman, Bruce Campbell.

Not saying any of these guys are the best actors in the world or anything, just can watch them in anything.

Tom Hanks and Morgan Freeman when it comes to more serious roles.
If I want to laugh out loud I turn to Adam Sandler, Steve Zahn or the team of Ben Stiller and Owen and Luke Wilson.

ABSOLUTELY! And I have not read the book so I do not know how it all turns out, and I'm looking forward to it. But No one tell me, ok. I don't like to know what happens before I see the movie. I remember when "The Phantom Menace" I told this guy how much I wanted to see it and he proceeded to blurt out what happens to Qui-Jonn at the end of the movie. I was pretty bummed.

Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp has yet to appear in a bad movie. Plus, it's criminal how his performance as Edward Scissorhands was ignored by the Acadamy :(

David Lynch - yes, just to be different, David Lynch. He should do more acting as well as directing. He was of course in Eraserhead, and he always cracks me up in Twin Peaks.

Bill Pullman - very, very, very underrated.

William H. Macy

Geoffrey Rush

Peter MacNicol - this guy needs to be more movies. He's not living upto his potential by mainly being limited to television.

Dan Aykroyd

Kevin Spacey

Brad Pitt - ignore his looks, he can act.

Tim Curry - when on top form. Sadly, he's not been on top form for about 20 years now :(

When you say actor I suppose you mean it in the old fashioned sense of male performers only - but incase you don't here's some actresses too.

Janeane Garofalo - worship her. Liked her ever since I first saw her as a reporter on TV Nation

Cameron Diaz not just the 'airhead' she appears to be. Taken a wide variety of roles and genres.

Catherine Keener

The same thing happened to me as well. It's always a bummer when that happens.

Johnny Depp is just a wonderful actor. I have a new found respect for him and want to see some more of his movies. I thought he was great in Sleepy Hollow too. Chocolat is a great movie and Johnny does a good job, though it's not a huge part. He looks really good too :) But fair warning, you shouldn't watch it when you're hungry.
