Re: Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2025

Finally saw KPOP Demon Hunters. It was fine, I guess. I absolutely understand where it found its widespread appeal. And I guess I'm happy that it's letting KPOP fans have their moment. They're just gonna have to have that party without me. It just kind of felt like a Frankenstein splicing of "T...

Re: Hoppers

Unfortunately, PIXAR don't really make those calls themselves, they and WDAS both answer to larger Disney. I don't think they really see any of the recent originals from WDAS or PIXAR that have been hit hard since the pandemic/streaming took over as "successful" aside from Encanto. The di...

Re: Tangled (Live-Action)

The trouble with modern moviegoing is that audiences tend to prioritize moviegoing based on whether or not it's part of a pre-existing conversation, moreso than whether or not they're even interested in the film. Even if it's a sequel/reboot that we all kind know is going to suck, TikTokers and the ...

Re: Moana (Live-Action)

The intricacies of the legalities around film marketing aren't really my specialty. But I think that displaying the name on a poster is just a matter of preference. Sometimes they do https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.78dc09d2e86514e6e44093d2c54e3e04?rik=5X7n8Igpm1tJMg&riu=http%3a%2f%2fartofthemovies.c...

Re: Hexed

I don't think the success of LA Moana or Tangled are guaranteed at this point. (My investment in those two projects is very convoluted and turbulent, so I don't really even know what I'm rooting for with them.) They have a lot of benefactors backing them up, but after Snow White's walk of shame, I a...

Re: Hexed

Seeing how Disney has sort of burned all of its goodwill surrounding princess fairy-tales (at least for now) after something like the Snow White remake, it sounds like they may be trying a backdoor into Disney nostalgia by invoking literal Disney magic--i.e. Merlin, The 3 Fairies, Tinker Bell. That'...

Re: Moana (Live-Action)

I appreciate that Miss Laga'aia's name is being featured in the promotion, that they're treating this like it has the capacity to be a star-making vehicle, so that she has a chance at being a real movie star after this movie, if she so chooses.

Re: Peter Pan Discussion

The animation is surprisingly elegant. I still prefer hand-drawn animation, even when used for something like a theme-park ride. And either way, I prefer physical animatronics over any kind of digital rendering. That'll be the shadow hanging over this thing for me. But I can absolutely appreciate th...

Re: Most anticipated Disney movie of 2026

"The Mandalorian and Grogu" has actually gone up a little in my estimation. The new trailer this last week looked pretty good.

My default favorites, though, will always go to Pixar and Disney Animation originals.

Re: Hexed

I suppose this is just the other end to the debate with Pixar character designs. "Why do all their characters look the same? It makes their films look cheap" vs. "Why did they change up their character designs? It makes their films look cheap" It may just be the different express...

Re: Frozen III

Ugh! It just kills me that there are people in this world who see the whole picture for this movie, and here we are stuck on the ground just speculating for another year and a half. I've had some cause these last few weeks to reflect back on the timeframe leading up to the first Frozen movie--way be...

A number of films have given their young male protagonists mother characters, but there are few instances of mother and son going on any kind of adventure together.

Re: Hexed

What stands out most to me with the character designs are the bright colors, which I'm a fan of. Casting choices? Also top-notch. I agree that mother-son pairings are regrettably rare in film, and so I'll miss the opportunity this could have been, but I suppose this is also the rare opportunity wher...

Re: Hoppers

I think from Pixar's perspective, the cartoony designs have been a deliberate rebuttal against their signature "Pixar look" that they defaulted to for like the first twenty years of their reign. I know I had seen some discussion about the studio resting on their laurels, basically daring t...

Shame. But it also means it'll be easier to license, meaning I might actually get to see it myself one of these days.

Re: Be Fri (Cancelled Pixar Film)

I think he and Lee were saddled with many of the same roadblocks, and those have done more to impede the success of their films than the actual quality of their leadership, which I think that journalists continue to deliberately overlook in the interest of a tastier news piece. (Mostly. I am still u...

Re: Be Fri (Cancelled Pixar Film)

A different former Pixar staffer tells THR that some employees are disappointed that the studio seems to let concerns about public perception lead its decision-making on movies like Elio and Be Fri. According to the individual, “the joke around Pixar” is that leadership “has no spine at all.” A rep...
