Ringing Bell

Post by Siren »

Anyone here see Ringing Bell? I know Paka has :D
But Ringing Bell was an old anime by the makers of Unico. It was about a lamb (Chirin) who's mother is killed by a wolf. Chirin wants revenge and set off to kill the wolf. But after observing him, he decides instead, he wants to wolf to train him to be a wolf. The wolf finally agrees and raises the little lamb, Chirin, to become a killer.
Sounds totally bizarre, I know. I love it. :)

I just need to add a few more video clips and the MP3s.

Excellent site, you have done a great job. I also like your Small One site. That is a excellent forgotten classic.

Yeah, who knows what else I'll dig up from the old VHS collection...Dot and the Kangaroo and Dot and the Whale perhaps will be next :D

So far I've done a pretty extensive search of Ringing Bell and all I came up with was the original novel Chirin no Suzu and several reincarnations of the VHS. When I started Small One, it was just the story, pics, and character profiles, then I got the equipment to do the clips, and then I ended up researching it more and found a LOT more then I ever expected. Ringing Bell has not yeilded much results. :(

"Ringing Bell"... A look into my twisted childhood

Post by Siren »

As a child, I watched un-childish things. By the time I was 4, I was hooked on B-horror. My mom allowed me to watch anything that was not full of violence and/or sexually explicit. But silly, stupid rubber monsters and iguanas with glued on horns were fair game.

My mom owned a video store when I was 8 and I found a little video in the kid section that seemed so innocent. A little lamb in a garden of flowers and clover.

Image

I was in the mood for a cute movie. Boy, was I surprised. The first several minutes was showcasing the lamb, Chirin, annoying everyone under the sun. The little sheep needed Ritalin. One day his mother tells him never to leave the pasture, otherwise the "Wolf King" will eat him. Well the Wolf King comes calling one evening, and kills his mother. Up until this point, the movie was reminding me heavily of Bambi (though Bambi was no where near annoying). After Chirin has his mental breakdown, he sets off, to find the wolf and KILL him. Of course, he does not succeed. But he ends up convincing the wolf to train him to be a killer, so one day he can kill the wolf. Chirin grows up into a kickarse monster ram. I won't spoil the ending. But I have most the movie uploaded and a lot of pictures. You can find it all here http://www.sirens-grotto.com/ringingbell.htm

I watched some bizarre things as a kid, this by far was one of the most bizarre. Very close to it was Unico 2...the animators HAD to be tripping on LSD to make that one.

Sanrio made it. Same company who did Unico. Yes, anime. :) It is based on a novel entitled Chirin no Suzu (The Bell of Chirin, I believe is the rough translation)

Yes, the crying lamb. I find it hysterical

Yup, the same :D

This movie has been spotted in just about every section of a video store. Horror, Family, Anime...and several copies that go on Ebay have those stickers to warn parents that just because it's animated, that there may be some images they don't like. Several websites have it listed as an animated horror. I see it more as a drama.

Hi

I saw that movie once when I worked for a rental store, I thought it looked cute so I picked it up to show to my 6 year old niece. It was one of the strangest movies I have ever seen in my whole life.

Wow, that sounds really interesting! I love the obscure; I gotta go check that out!

He Siren, since you grew up around a lot of videos I was wondering if you were familiar with some animated movie that starred either a fox kit or a puppy that loses his mother at a very young age. I believe it was shown on Saturday morning TV in the eary eighties as a two-parter, and it's possible it made it to video. I only saw the first half but it left a deep impression on me.

Oh great; I just realized how vague of a description that was. I wish I could remember some kind of detail! Oh well. But it's obviously not Disney's Fox and the Hound.

Was it The Little Fox?

Image

Movie description
Vic, an orphaned fox, is raised by his wise, good-hearted Uncle Karak and taught how to survive in the forest.

Or perhaps Scruffy

Image
Movie description
The story of a tiny puppy, tragically orphaned. Scruffy is involved in a series of emotional and perilous adventures before she is freed by Butch, a stray dog who fights for her freedom after she is deceived into becoming an accomplice in crime.

Oh shoot, I should have mentioned that. . . for several years I thought it was, and when I stumbled across it at Goodwill a few months ago I snatched it right up. Unfortunately, it wasn't the right movie. Still, it would be awesome to find an unedited, subtitled copy (mine no longer had the case but the label is clearly marked "edited for content"). I also remember reading about it in the Whole Toon Catalog.

But wow, you know your obscure animated films!

Squeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SCRUFFY!!!!! That has to be it!!! I recognize those characters. . . seeing her gives me this weird feeling in the pit of my stomach. . . I can remember that character clearly now.

Either I missed it the first time I saw your post or you added in on quickly after?

Either way, thank you!!! I've so totally been into looking for nostalgic films lately from my childhood. . . All I have to do is get this and the "Free to Be You and Me" DVD and I'll be all set!
