Coming To DVD In 2004

Post by disneyfella »

Alright, I know there were threads on this stuff, and Luke is awesome at keeping all this up but just to get it all in one place (well, that and I have a ton of time on my hands before I go see Pirates) Here's all the info I could drag up off the internet and put into one place on the up and coming direct-to-video things disney is coming out with. Again, if you all know something I don't feel free to add.

Unknown 2003

Mulan II

Starring: Believe it or not, the only voice I could find out that was for sure in this was Michelle Kwan. I'm assuming the original Mulan and Shang will return, but I doubt Disney would've footed the bill to get Eddie Murphy back. What a shame.

Storyline: Preparing for their wedding Shang and Mulan are suddenly sent off on a secret mission Mushu starts to meddle and a surprise attack by Mongolians doesn't help either.

NOTE: Figure skating champion Michelle Kwan, who once skated to scenes from Mulan on TV, gets her own character—a shopkeeper named Michelle—for which she recently recorded three lines of dialog. Mulan 2 will feature two of the female characters that had a cameo during the "Honor to Us All" segment. Mushu now has his own big chair in the middle of the ancesters' tombs, and two of them are fanning him with leaves.

Unknown 2004

The Lion King 1 1/2

Starring: ( the voices of) Matthew Broderick (yes, it's confirmed he IS coming back), Shaun Fleming (as young Simba), Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella (they are also confirmed as returning).

Storyline: This sequel will tell the story of how Timon and Pumbaa got together. However, the Hollywood Reporter says that it will be more of a back story to the original told from Timon and Pumbaa's perspective. I'll continue looking further on this one though.

NOTE: Elton John and Tim Rice have written a new song for this one called, "Meerkat Rhapsody". Perhaps it was a misprint, or they just changed the idea of Warthog Rhapsody. The rest of the music is written by Martin Erskine and the lyrics by Seth Friedman. Also a song called "Digga Tunnah" was written for the movie.

NOTE: Disney's site should have the specs up for this DVD, and if not let me know and I'll post them here. (If I'm not mistaken they've already been posted in one of our threads.)

Unknwon 2004

Lilo and Stitch 2

Starring: believe it or not, Daveigh Chase (the original Lilo) will NOT be returning to provide Lilo's voice. Apparently the animators thought her voice had changed so much as apparent in the Spirited Away dubbed version. Tia Carrere, however, loves the character and lives in LA so she's pretty much a shoe-in to reprise her role (heck, she's doing it for the TV series, I wouldn't be suprised if she show up on The House Of Mouse soon). Jason Scott Lee has reportedly turned down the TV voice, but no news as to this sequel or not.

Storyline: This is NOT to be confused with a direct-to-video sequel Stitch! The Movie. Stitch! is a prequel for the television series. It sort of sets everything up for where to go. I have absolutely no clue as to the premise of this one, but I'll keep looking and report back if I find anything else.

NOTE: Billy Martin is scoring the film right now.

August 3rd, 2004

The Three Musketeers

Starring: This will be the current voices for the characters today. I don't remember them all but Bill Farmer does Goofy. Donald and Mickey play the other Musketeer's (i'm not sure which one is which though). Minnie will play the Princess and (get this 2099net  ) Black Pete will play the villainous Captain of the Guard.

Storyline: I haven't read anything specific, but this is the disney twist on the Three Musketeers.

NOTE: The writer is David Mickey Evans. (yes his middle name IS Mickey)

NOTE: Rumor has it that is will use watercolor backgrounds.

Unknown 2004

The Heffalump Movie

Starring: Nothing confirmed, but you can bet the voices from Piglet's Big movie are going to be the same here.

Storyline: I couldn't find one, but it IS confirmed to be in production now.

NOTE: Carly Simon is writing original songs and resprising "Deep In The Hundred Acre Wood" for this one.

Unknown 2004

Mickey's Twice Upon A Christmas

Starring: The same voices from Three Musketeer's.

Storyline: I'm not sure if this is going to be a package feature again, or what, but it IS a sequel to Mickey's Once Upon A Christmas (so probably).

NOTE: Yes, for at least one segement Mickey WILL be CGI. Calm down everybody, catch your breath. Disney promises he'll look better than he did at the Oscar's.

Unknown 2004

Tarzan II

Starring: I really couldn't find a single name on this one.

Storyline: Tarzan II is actually going to be a 'mid'quel. It deals with Tarzan as a kid and is supposed to occur during his growing up period. Apparently there was a teaser on Tarzan and Jane, but I'm not too sure of that.

NOTE: This project is 'Nearing Completion' according to Disney reps.

That's all that I can find that has been confirmed. Now, this doesn't mean that's all Disney is working on right now. You wouldn't believe the stuff I found on the net. Here's a list of some of the stuff Disney is working on (either storywise, or animation, or even filming!).

The Big Break

Hercules 2: The Trojan War

Clerks: Sell Out (Miramax Film)

Pete's Dragon 2

Gnomeo & Juliet (Rocket Pictures) [with Elton John]

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 2: The Sequel

Oliver & Company 2

Mulan 3

Treasure Planet 2

NOTE: Bambi The Great Prince and Dumbo 2 have been slowed down immensely due to horrible CGI tests that were done with them. I have no clue as to the current status of them, but it seems to be up in the air as to whether these are on hold, or currently in production. Only time will tell. I'll keep looking for info on some of those things, but if you have any specific questions on them, feel free to email me. I love looking up disney stuff on the net.

Here's a link to an earlier thread discussing DTV stuff from Disney.

There's more on DTV sequels in this earlier posting:
http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=124

As you can see the information I have been given on the Tarzan sequel is different to Disneyfella's (its from DVD Exclusive). Nothing wrong with that as Disney seems to flip-flop on all their decisions, but somewhat worrying if it is to be released next year!

I believe I did see an interview with Ming Na where she said she was contracted to do the voices for Mulan II and Mulan III, but hadn't yet done so. DVD Exclusive lists:
Voices: Ming Na, Donny Osmond, Lea Salonga, B.D. Wong
No sign of Eddie Murphy.

Another "In Production" is "The Emperor's Newer Groove" which Animated Movies (I think it was) reported has had the soundtrack recorded.

Treasure Planet II is under review - last I heard work hadn't stopped but it seem likely it has - especially with Disney closing another of their animation studios earlier this week (France). Work on the Treasure Planet TV series was stopped before it got anywhere near the animation stage of development. I wouldn't look for this anytime soon.

Gnomeo and Juliet is of course CGI  But a decent telling of a strong, traditional story (Romeo and Juliet) could just be what Disney needs at this time. Sad that what is perhaps Disney's strongest title up in the list (I think it has potential) is not really a Disney film but like Pixar is only Disney distributing another studios product. I was unaware that this was to be a DTV product, but thinking about it, being as it is Rocket Picture's start up film this could be correct as it us unlikely to have the high budget of a cinematic release.

Good news on Gnomeo and juliet!! It actually is an inside production produced at walt disney feature animation,(I stress feature) rocket pictures is elton John's company and it is a co production with disney. Gary trousdale is directing :) It was Elton who approached disney with the story etc.. However It is CGI production... Valiant however will be distributed by disney, and is being made in England.

Insiders at the studio were told something rather interesting though, that Disney is considering ONLY distributing in the future if it fails. It is way too early to elaborate yet as things do change daily. Our best hope is that MY Peoples and Gnomeo are great and do well. I certainly hope so because traditional will go after "home on the range" (most animators have already gone). In the frenzy of downsizing throwing the whole animation division out and ownly becoming a distributor is a possible reality that executives have openly discussed...

I know-who cares about heffelumps? we want "Eeyore's Tragic Tale" or "Eeyore Tragic Tail". But I'm really excited about "3 Musketeers". Hope it's same quality as "Prince and the Pauper" or "Christmas Carol"!

3 Musketeers excites me, and I look forward to the Heffalump movie, but will it involve Pooh et al? If not, then perhaps it is not quite as exciting.

LK2, Tarzan 2 and Stitch 2 look kind of fun, but Mulan 2 seems pointless and somewhat insulting (and before certain, vocal elements on this board say so, NO I don't think all sequels are pointless and have enjoyed all the others thus far).

The New Groove sequel could be kinda fun too. Love the first one, deserves more adventures...

Just a note on Clerks: Sell Out (as pointed out, a Miramax film). It could be a while before Kevin Smith gets around to it from some reports I've read. His Jersey Girl has been pushed back for some reason, so he may not start work on it until after February (at which time, it has been cryptically suggested that he will work on a "humorous sci-fi flick...of my own design, that I'd probably start in February...". It has been said to be done in Flash animation, but we may not see it until the end of next year now...

Of all the sequels being talked about this is really the only one that intrigues me, but only because I loved the characters in the original so much.

Well, the truth is, it is unfair to say that there is no reason for a Mulan sequel when the truth is, there is no reason, for 99% of Disney's sequels, as the originals end perfectly well. I am hoping Mulan II will be good, but don't hold out much hope, however, I think the 3rd one has potential. Many times in trilogies, and Aladdin is a good example of Disney's first attempt at a trio, The first is the best, second is the worst, and third is pretty good. I have the feeling this is what we should expect of the Mulan trilogy. Also production began on the third one while the second one was still being written, so we will see.

I think doing the story of the Trojan War is a cool idea, as I stated in another thread, I think they should do the Odyssy, but it would either be a very long animated feature, or 2 regular lengths. I just fear that they already butchered the Greek Mythology and made a mockery of it with Hercules, and now to continue the story of Herc in the Illiad, can only mean bad things  .....

I was miffed, though I never saw it, at Tarzan and Jane, because when the movie ended, and this is one Disney movie that was made for sequels, Jane is wearing the pink/red two piece at the end and it looks like it could carry on in to many great adventures, but then in Tarzan and Jane, not only was the animation cheap, but Jane was put back into her old outfit, not very "jungle queen". So I was hoping this TarzanII was going to be the "real sequel" as I read somewhere, and that Jane would be in the right outfit, and there would be some kind of story, but from what I understand TandJ was linked with the TV show, which I can only imagine wasn't up to movie standards, story wise.

I understand they "needed" the $$$ from the sequels or whatever, don't understand why they couldn't be made with a little more thought/effort, but I hope all these (sorry guys you know who you are  ) "cheapquels" are vaulted forever. I dread sequels now, live action or animation, and I believe it is because of Disney. Not to say that all non-disney sequels are bad... and while I am on this sequel rant, can someone please shoot that damn dog! (Air Bud)

...huuuuhhhhhhhhhh... well, enough said, I still plan on seeing most of the sequels coming out next year, but it takes alot out of me just to think about them :( .........

(Although one thing I hate more than cheapquels, are the stupid TV spin- offs, like the Little Mermaid and such  YUCK!)

Oh, I agree. I think I just meant that when you are dealing with another culture's legends and history, you need to be careful with how you treat spinoffs.

The fairytale stuff, despite the happily ever after, has been open to countless retellings in the public domain for centuries.

Mind you, the same could be said for the Mulan story, but I hope you get my point, as I agree with yours - but have liked the sequels anyways.

Ugh, I still don't understand this attitude!
Can someone PLEASE explain to me how a sequel ruins the original? Even a bad one?

It is not like the originals are not available. EVERY one of movies that have had sequels made has been made available on DVD, or a DVD release is pending in the next few years. So, how is a movie you once enjoyed ruined by the release of another movie?

Is Coke any less enjoyable because you don't like diet coke? The new Star Wars movies may suck to some people, but they still love the originals! Temple of Doom was not as good as Raiders (IMO), but Raiders is still one of my fave movies of all time. There are heaps of examples.

If you are going to bash the sequels, bash them becauase you've watched them all and you don't like them. Don't say they "ruin" the original, because that is just plain silly.

Well, I am not opposed to sequels case shut, I just don't like any, I think sequels can be great, but unfortunately if they are not needed, or are terrible I think they can ruin the original a bit.

Take Aladdin for example. I was a major Aladdin fan, when I was a little boy, and when I heard there was going to be a sequel I was so excited, but when the sequel eventually came out, I was thoroughly disappointed. As young as I was, I was able to notice the cheaper quality animation, the things that were just not done right, like the fact that Aladdin anbd Jasmine were suddenly not married, even though they clearly had been at the end of the first, the fact that the Genie now had his cuffs back, the sign of his enslavement, his hat was different ( ok that is not so big, and is in a small part of the film, but I was/am looking for consistancy), and the Saltan wants to make Aladdin royal vesier? I thought he was now the prince!?! Do you see, how it deteriorates from the original story, and yet the way the trilogy was made we are suppose to follow all three movies, to get to the end of the final story.

Little Mermaid 2, triton was against humans and the interaction between the two worlds. Although the merpeople show up for the wedding at the end it is to send them off and say goodbye, now suddenly with the birth of a granddaughter, Triton is ready to unite the 2 worlds and everyone is sing song happy!?! I don't think so. God this oine just had so much potential and it was all thrown away... Hughhhhhhhhhhhh

(Oh and also the show of Little mermaid and Aladdin and even Herc, I believe they all take away from the originals too, some times even more than a sequel.) They seem to make the chacters goofy and this can effect a perception of a certain character even when watching the original.

For example the Genie, even though he is a funny guy in the movie, he also has his serious moments, he is not just a one dimensional clown, as he appears in the rest of the movies and tv series. Yes kids and even adults may get excited at the prospect of a continuation of their favorite stories, but they need to be done and remain faithful to the originals, and there needs to be a reason for them, it can't be lets just make a sequel because we can...

Plus I think the animation, in adition to being good, has to mach up with the original, and while comedies are nice sometimes, it is also nice to see a serious movie...

Well I guess that is all I have to say on this matter, I am not a complete sequel hater, as I did like the Jungle Book 2, but am upset that the stupid bird Lucky and Sher Khan, were miraculously alive at the end as it was not needed...

Phillip -

Yes I agree that sequels can be crap and/or disappointing. That was not the issue.

But can you honestly say that the sequel has RUINED the original for you?
Does the fact that there is another film out make the original not as good for some reason?

If you answer yes to either of these questions, then I would in turn question how much you did actually like the original.

Oh hell no.
Just because LM2 wasn't all that great doesn't mean it'd somehow diminish my love for the original. No way. Each film sits on its own merits and I would never let the crimes of a sequel affect my feelings towards the original.

That's plain loomis...errr...loopy.

I think my name should be synonymous with loopy.

And yeah, that's good. I made my orginal comments in this thread because someone said that 'how many movies must Disney RUIN...', and I just wanted to argue that a sequel should not be able to do that. As you say "Each film sits on its own merits".

All I was saying is, how is it possible for another film to RUIN something one claims to love?

Cheers! :D

I didn’t mean that it makes the original bad, if you see it. But it can ruin your perception … how am I going to explain this… (I had it so beautifully worded before my computer froze  )

You may have seen Beauty and the Beast and loved it(this is just an example), but if you have not seen it in a while or whatever, and suddenly you start seeing stupid stuff, with cartoonish Mrs. Potts, Chip Lumiere, and Cogsworth, then you turn around and see a preview of the movie, that does not reflect the beauty of the movie, but rather a kiddie side of it, and then you turn around and see a terrible sequel, with cheaper animation, a story that is sub par and characters that have become caricatures of themselves and have not remained true to who they were in the originals, you are going to ask yourself, “was it really as good as I thought?” or you may have even by that point convinced yourself that you didn’t like it in the first place.

Is this making any sense?

Often times if I see something that isn’t being marketed well, or being advertised in McDonald’s and Taco Bell, ect, and the previews may look goofy or whatever, I become turned off by the film right away, or even if I’ve already seen it, I don’t remember it as good as it actually was, this does not make it bad, and when I see it again I remember how good it is. (Sadly this can also work in reverse, leading to repeated viewings of a movie you don’t necessarily like). I remember with Hunchback, whether I initially liked it or not so many people complained that it should never have been made by Disney and such and there was such negativity that I was convinced it must have been bad, but glad that I gave it a chance and bought the DVD.

This doesn’t make for a faux fan or whatever, it just is natural, I would assume.

Even if it doesn’t have that effect, it makes a lot of die hard fans angry, because they feel the story they have cherished is being made a mockery of. You may not ever watch the sequels, because you want to block them out, pretend they don’t exist so they don’t “ruin” the originals for you, but if you see a preview for a cheaply done “sequel” you may get mad. Now obviously you Loomis, find the sequels enjoyable to an extent, and that is fine, but I don’t think you could argue that you wish they were better.

Well I don’t know exactly where else I wanted to go with this so…

( Oh, and my computer is going through another freezing spell, so it has taken me close to 2 hours to type, retype, and post this. Hope it was worth it)

edit: added in the emoticons

P.S. Don't know if this was explained very well ,but hopefully you got what I was trying to say :|
