Another Prestigious DAC Film Line

Post by Disney's Divinity »

I know it's sort of irrelevant these days with physical media dying, but if they did another prestigious release line (say through Criterion Collection or something in-depth like that), what films do you think deserve to be included? And feel free to give ideas on how you would do them. :)

Personally, I would like them to include all the films that are deserving. I know they tried to keep the list down around 10 in the past to keep the cycles short, but since recurring physical releases are no longer something to plan, I'd rather have it done complete for once.

The films I'd include would be:

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Pinocchio
Fantasia
Dumbo
Bambi
Cinderella
Peter Pan
Alice in Wonderland
Lady and the Tramp
Sleeping Beauty
The Jungle Book
One Hundred and One Dalmatians
The Aristocats
Robin Hood
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
The Little Mermaid
Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin
The Lion King
Pocahontas
Hercules
Mulan
Tarzan
Lilo & Stitch
The Princess and the Frog
Tangled
Frozen
Moana
Zootopia
Frozen II
Encanto

The only one I'm wondering about is Zootopia. Massively successful, so I'd say yes overall--same thing with Frozen II--but I still wonder if the film and characters have that much recognition? Whereas on the other end things like Aristocats, Hercules, Robin Hood, Encanto, TP&TF, Pooh, etc. weren't huge at the box office, but have developed varying amounts of general recognition. After all, Bambi and Fantasia were never big hits at the box office, but still ubiquitous with Disney.

All of them with the best restorations and all the bonus features...! :shifty:

I would love some whose previous releases were lacking in bonus features. I doubt these would happen, but: The package features (although I doubt they'd get fancy releases), The Sword in the Stone, The Aristocrats, Robin Hood, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, The Rescuers, The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective, Oliver & Company, The Rescuers Down Under, Hercules all had pretty lackluster previous releases.

The Emperor's New Groove and Tangled if they could include bonus features about the previous versions. It wouldn't happen, but even Home on the Range, Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, and Bolt if we're talking about movies that went through extensive changes.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, and Frozen I think would be shoo-ins. I'd love Pocahontas and The Princess and the Frog too.

Really I think all the films in the canon are worth getting an amazing (possible final) deluxe edition on home video.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Pinocchio
Bambi
Cinderella
Peter Pan
Sleeping Beauty
The Jungle Book
The Little Mermaid
Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin
The Lion King
The Princess and the Frog
Tangled
Wreck-it Ralph
Frozen + Frozen II
Zootopia
Moana
Encanto

There are lots of movies that I like that didn't make this cut. I'm just zeroing in on the movies that I think are the best made and/or represent significant turning points within the Disney canon. I'm bolding the essentials, the ones I'd keep around if we HAD to whittle it down to keep the numbers small. I might be willing to promote Encanto to that group seeing as it was the first (and arguably only, at present) movie to become a real hit after Disney+ changed the game, but I feel like it needs a little more mileage before it can qualify.

I'm kind of cheating by bundling the Frozens together, but I also think double features are perfectly in the question.

I definitely miss the cycle of Disney home media releases. I think it did a lot to keep these movies fresh to the rising generations, and I wonder how Disney hopes to approximate that effect now that all films are made equal under the algorithm.

Yeah, I assume the Frozen films would simply be bundled the way the Fantasia films are. Same thing when Moana 2 does big numbers.

@blackcauldron85: I definitely would love if all the DACs got a special release, but at least hopefully they might get the same restorations Snow White and Cinderella got recently (I believe Sleeping Beauty is next up in that line).
