It is, even though I feel a more traditional performance would have elevated it. It would have also made it more commercial. I understand why they chose the singer they did, but I think a more trained or skilled vocalist would have accentuated the song's musicality. They should have at least recorded another version of the song by a different singer.
D82 wrote:By the way, the soundtrack for Ghibli's Earwig and the Witch is already available to listen and it includes two songs performed by Indonesian singer Sherina Munaf: "Don't Disturb Me" and "The World is In My Hands", but I don't know if they're original compositions or not or if they'll be eligible.
Based on a cursory check, it seems they are original works. I didn't care for "Don't Disturb Me", but "The World Is in My Hands" was cute. Neither of them are Oscar material though.

Personally, the way she performs it is one of the things I liked about the song, but I don't know much about singing. I guess you're right that a more traditional performance would've made it more commercial. Recording a second version by a different singer probably would've been a good idea.

Thanks for checking if they were original or not. I much prefer the second one too, but I agree they're not Oscar material. I posted them mainly in case, like me, someone else was curious about what the songs from this movie sounded like. Plus, I don't think any Ghibli song has been nominated at the Oscars, right? In my opinion, some of them have been Oscar worthy, like for instance, the end credits song from Spirited Away. But I guess Western countries don't have the same taste in music, plus it's probably more difficult for a foreign film to be nominated in categories like Best Song.

Oh, I agree. I love that song too. It's so lyrical and haunting. No Ghibli song has ever been nominated for an Oscar. I think it has less to do with Western taste in music and more with the language barrier and the lack of domestic talent to do promotions and networking. Foreign-language songs have been nominated (and won) in the past, but it's a rarity and they usually release an English-language version of the song too. Kacey Musgraves is recording an English version of "Don't Disturb Me", so that might boost the song's chances.

Yes, I'd read on another forum about Kacey recording "Don't Disturb Me" for the Ghibli film. Looking forward to it! I imagine she'll have a new album out in 2021, too, so it will very much be the year of Kacey for me. So excited!

I agree. It's my personal favorite from Ghibli.

Yes, the songs being in a different language and performed by singers who are unknown for domestic audiences must certainly be an important factor of why they haven't been nominated yet.

US distributors of Ghibli films should've done that more in the past to promote the songs. I think some of Joe Hisaishi's scores could've also been nominated if they had been promoted more.

Yes, they should have. Joe Hisaishi's compositions are excellent. My favorite scores of his are for Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, but all of them are great, really.

I'm glad "How Can I Tell You?" was nominated and also both "Seen" and "Free" by Diane Warren (by the way, I've just noticed the two have one-word titles). Although, I'm surprised they put The One and Only Ivan in the Animated Film category. And it seems they really liked Onward and Soul; they both got three nominations.

I'm glad to see "Free" and "Rocket to the Moon" in there. By the way, I've seen on the previous page "Speak Now" has already won several awards. I guess it's the frontrunner right now. And it's a good song, I wouldn't mind if it won the Oscar, even though I'd prefer Diane Warren finally won in the category.

The nominations for the Golden Globes are out. It's disappointing "Rocket to the Moon" wasn't nominated. I would have liked "How Can I Tell You?" getting nominated too, but that was more of a long shot.

Yeah, it's a shame those two songs weren't nominated. It's not surprising, though. None of them had too famous performers and that's a disadvantage when it comes to the Golden Globes.

I hadn't noticed the update until now. I'm glad "Seen" has won at least one award this season. I would've preferred for "How Can I Tell You?" to win in the documentary category, but "Never Break" is a good song too. However, I'm disappointed by "Just Sing"'s victory in the animation category. "Free", "Rocket to the Moon" and even "Carried Me with You" were better, in my opinion.

^Thanks for posting, Sotiris! I'm glad the full list has been revealed. You were right Disney most likely wouldn't submit the songs from Soul and The New Mutants. If I'm not mistaken, the Oscar shortlists will be announced next week. It'll be interesting to see what songs make the cut.

Yeah, it's a real shame. Well, the truth is that it looked like a stronger contender earlier in the season than now, after not being nominated for the Golden Globes or the Critics' Choice, so I wasn't completely sure it would end up being nominated for the Oscar, but I didn't expect it wouldn't even be shortlisted. It's also a shame "How Can I Tell You" from the documentary Nasrin wasn't either, though I know it wasn't one of the favorites. I'm happy for "Free" from The One and Only Ivan, though. Disney has two songs still in contention then: that one and "Loyal, Brave, True" from Mulan. That was also a bit of a surprise; "Carried Me With You" from Onward seemed to have a better chance than that song, but finally it wasn't shortlisted.

"Seen" has won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. This is Diane Warren's second Golden Globe win. Her first one was for "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" from the film "Burlesque".
