Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga 4K Blu-ray

Post by JeanGreyForever »

Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga 4K Blu-ray Box Set is Coming
Image
On March 31, all nine films of The Skywalker Saga will be released in a Best Buy exclusive box set. There will be 27 discs, with each film having one disc on 4K, one disc on Blu-Ray, and one disc on Blu-Ray for bonus features. Rogue One and Solo are NOT included in this set. It costs about $330 in Canadian Dollars so in the US, it should cost about $250.

There'll be a UK regular set as well that doesn't include the special book packaging and I think is just the Blu-Ray discs (so 18 discs). No word yet if the US will receive something similar that isn't a Best Buy exclusive.

And I presume this will feature just the special editions of the OT with even more new alterations and not include the pre-SE versions?

They will be the same as they are on Disney Plus.

Yes, JJ Abrams asked Disney to release the unaltered Original Trilogy but they basically said they can't do that. It's been heavily speculated that George Lucas still has the final say on their release or at least, has some sort of clause or stipulation in his deal with Disney that they can't release them.

While its not going to be the untouched original at all, it at least looks better than it has been looking. Its not as magenta tinted, white balance looks more correct. I have a feeling they can and will release the originals, after they get money for this version first. The movies will be on a bit of a hiatus so they will want to release something to excite fans, this would be it.

I hear George has been doing private screenings recently of the untouched originals, maybe a sign he's ready to sign off on releasing them?

I dont understand why they havent released the 3d versions yet in any capacity. Apparently they are done, that's the master they released on disney plus, just in 2D.

JJ said that Disney can't do anything about the UOT, so probably Lucas still holds the rights.
Disney stopped with 3D in North America, maybe in Europe.

I mean Lucas should just release the unaltered films officially already. They’re too important to film history not to see the light of day again. Plus, it’d make Lucasfilm and Disney huge buckets of money and people wouldn’t have to resort to just downloading fan edits.

Scandinavian releases are up for pre-order on Cdon.no and they reveal the bonus extras all but IX. I say this because this is what can be expected on the Skywalker Saga set:

Episode I:
-Audio Commentary by George Lucas, Rick McCallum, Ben Burtt, Rob Coleman, Dennis Muren and Scott Squires
-Archival Commentary by the Cast & Crew
-Conversations: Doug Chiang Looks Back
-Discoveries From Inside: Models & Miniatures
-George Lucas On The Digital Revolution

Episode II:
-Audio Commentary By George Lucas, Rick McCallum, Ben Burtt, Rob Coleman, Pablo Helman, John Knoll And Ben Snow
-Archival Audio Commentary By The Cast And Crew
-Conversations: Sounds In Space
-Discoveries From Inside: Costumes Revealed
-The Art Of Attack Of The Clones
-Making-of-Collection

Episode III:

-Archival Audio Commentary by the Cast and Crew
-Conversations: The Star Wars That Almost Was
-Discoveries from Inside: Holograms & Bloopers
-Making-of-Collection

Episode IV:
-Audio Commentary by George Lucas, Carrie Fisher, Ben Burtt and Dennis Muren
-Archival Audio Commentary by the Cast and Crew
-Conversations: Creating A Universe
-Discoveries From Inside: Weapons & The First Lightsaber
-Anatomy Of A Dewback
-Making-of-Collection

Episode V:

-Classic Creatures: Return Of The Jedi
-Making-of-Collection

Episode VII:
-Audio Commentary by director J.J. Abrams
-Secrets Of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey
-The Story Awakens: The Table Read
-Building BB-8
-Crafting Creatures
-Blueprint of a Battle: The Snow Fight
-The Visual Magic Of The Force
-John Williams: The Seventh Symphony
-Deleted Scenes
-Force For Change
-Dressing The Galaxy
-Foley: A Sonic Tale
-Inside The Armory
-and much more!

Episode VIII:
-Audio Commentary by Rian Johnson
-Score-Only Version of the movie
-The Director And The Jedi
-Balance Of The Force
-Scene Breakdowns - Lighting The Spark: Creating The Space Battle
-Scene Breakdowns - Snoke And Mirrors
-Scene Breakdowns - Showdown On Crait
-Andy Serkis Live!
-Meet The Porgs
-Deleted Scenes

Now the overview; there's no telling if Episode I will have a Making-of Collection too, but if it's telling us anything, we SHOULD expect all previous material related to each film ported over. One thing's for sure; Episode VII's material will be the same as the Collector's Edition release and VIII will port over the Meet the Porgs extra which was only available exclusively at Target via a DVD bonus disc PLUS, you're gaining a music-only track (which is something awesome!).

Do you know what's in the Making-of-Collection sets? Is it all the previous bonus features from the DVDs and Blu-Rays like you alluded to? I'm sure Episode I will have the Making-of-Collection as well.

Episode VII says "much more" which makes me wonder if there's anything else from the Collector's Edition that wasn't already listed or if this means that we can expect some new features for TFA. I know of several deleted scenes we never got like Han putting up the dice in the Falcon or Leia and Chewie mourning Han's death.

I'm glad that TLJ is porting over the Target bonus exclusive and also that the score-only version of the film is actually on the disc and not just a digital exclusive like it was before. Disney Plus features this as well I think.

As for TROS, Blu-Ray.com listed some of the following features. Really hope we get a commentary and deleted scenes as well at the least.
- The Skywalker Saga (126 minutes)
- Creating Fighter Jet Chase Sequence
- The Aliens in the Desert
- D-O: The Key to the Past
- Warwick and Children
- Creature Assembly

I don't own them on Blu-Ray, only DVD, so 4-6 are a must have for me in the new format. Especially if they include all previous bonus features alongside the new ones.

Also, I really wish they would make Cast and Crew archival commentaries for the ST films as well. Daisy Ridley basically did a commentary of the throne room scene in TLJ which would be perfect to include.

I decided to buy IV - VI after all. I received ANH and RotJ this week from Amazon, but since Amazon doesn't ship to my country because of the virus for now, I had to buy ESB from eBay, hopefully it will arrive next week. Then I'm going to watch them all to see how they turned out.
I'm waiting for TFA to be shipped from Amazon as well, and I'll get TLJ whenever the new release is available.

I won on bidding the exclusive BestBuy Star Wars Saga 4K set at the very good price on eBay. That set interests me a lot and was kind of a must-have, but I finally asked the seller to cancel the transaction, for the seller would have to go the post office to ship it (he/she doesn't have the mail carrier to pick up the packages directly at his/her mailbox or something) and with the situation getting so messed up in the US too (notably because people don't care to fully realize) I don't want to encourage anybody to go outside for a few bucks ^^'... (even if money can sound that appealing ^^)

... I 'll wait a few months before ordering anything else. Looking forward for this plague to end up

Abrams didn't even record a commentary for The Rise of Skywalker, nor are any deleted scenes offered, leading me to suspect there may even be another release of the film in the future. But given the reception to Rise (even though I personally loved it), I don't think Disney plans on revisiting the films on home media again.

But didn't they just release The Last Jedi on 4K? Did that not have new bonus features? I haven't bought TRoS yet; I don't have 4K capabilities, but if there's another better Blu-ray coming out, I'd like to hold out...

The Last Jedi in the Skywalker Saga is a new pressing of the set that now includes the Score-Only version of the film on its movie disc and the "Meet the Porgs" featurette on its bonus disc, both of which were previously digital exclusives.

Likewise, all the standard Blu-Rays for the films are not a recycling from their original Blu-Ray releases in 2011 (Episodes 1 to 6), 2016 (Episode 7), and 2018 (Episode 8 ). Rather, they are all newly-authored from the 4K transfers, and with consistent menus for all 9 films.

Thank you for that exhaustive listing of bonus features which were not included. Luckily, I have the 2004 DVDs for the OT and the PT DVDs so most of the deleted scenes and dropped content is featured on there. I never got the Blu-Ray set and pretty much all the bonus features from the Blu-Ray set were carried over so I'm good on that.

I'd be perfectly happy to double-dip with TROS like I did with TFA for a commentary and deleted scenes. I read the novelization and almost all the deleted scenes were from the first act and involved Leia or Ben. In other words, the heart of the film and the spirit of the film. I cannot believe JJ had the gall to delete Carrie Fisher's content and literally take out Ben's story from his film just to prop up Finn and Poe, two characters who have never taken off and never will. I would kill to see some of that deleted footage and my only hope is that Disney will one day release an extended edition or "special edition" with the "lost" footage since otherwise it truly will be lost. The film needed an extra hour of content imo and if Endgame could pull it off, Star Wars definitely could have as well.
