Disney Officially Renames First Star Wars Film (No Joke!)

Post by NeoSuperBlissey »

Gamebyte.com is reporting that Disney, in keeping with the naming scheme of not including episode numbers in the titles of the mainline Star Wars films they have produced, has changed the title of the first Star Wars film. Henceforth, that title has officially been shortened to Star Wars: A New Hope.

I mean the film's title has already been changed before. The original trilogy films were renamed to match the then planned prequels so it's not super shocking that they're being renamed again to match the sequels.

I wasn't saying anything about the renaming being a good or a bad thing. I simply wanted to share this with you.

Sorry to sound antagonistic if I came across that way. Appreciate you sharing this!

I'm curious if the prequels will be renamed as well. It would give me a good laugh if they weren't given the same treatment.

Well, in my view it is. The numbers werent there or needed until they decided to bring in the prequels, but now that we have them, you kinda do need numbers to be able to tell someone new to the franchise which order they take place.

A title change isn't enough to improve that film.

I still find Tangled worthy of the title being changed back!!! Oh, if only Disney would do it!

Have they been really changed (as in the opening scroll) or they're just using shortened titles for marketing purposes? I think it's just the latter because the sequel trilogy films have been marketed without the "Episode XYZ" moniker and yet they retain it in the opening scroll. So, it's kind of a non-issue.

I can only assume that the renaming is purely for marketing purposes.

Sad that this was my first thought last night when I saw this topic. I'm sure it'll happen someday.

The opening crawl is pretty much the only time the sequel films have been referred to by their episode number, besides the brief period that they are untitled.

True. I feel that nowadays most people refer to the films by their subtitles/acronyms (TPM, ANH, TLJ, etc.) rather than episode numbers.
