What If...?

We have exclusively learned that Marvel Studios will be producing a new television series for the Disney+ streaming service based on the popular What If comic book series. The new animated show will be overseen by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios, but the stories will not be canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Like the comics, this animated anthology series will provide stories that explore how the Marvel Cinematic Universe might have unfolded if key moments in its history had not occurred as they did in recognized canon. For example, one of the episodes will adapt What If? Vol.1 #47, which explored the idea of “What if Loki had found the hammer of Thor?”

The idea is that they could potentially have some of the main actors from the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe movies reprise their roles in the animated series, which would imagine alternate possibilities from another dimension. The time commitment for voice acting is a whole lot less than for live-action productions, which could accommodate some of the biggest Marvel talent. The series would function as an anthology, just like the comic book series, with each episode tackling a different premise.

I have confirmed the information above with three separate sources. Currently, it’s unclear if they will use any other storylines from the comics for inspiration other than the one mentioned above. It’s possible that many of the scenarios will be entirely new, and we know that they will be based on what we have seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and not the comic canon.

Love the idea. And I wouldn't mind if it was handdrawn and had an animation style close to the comic, or cartoons from the 80s.

The article says Squeeze is animating on 5 episodes. There are 10 episodes in total, so we will probably see different styles being used.

Maybe only those five episodes that Squeeze Studio is animating will be motion captured? Parts of some of the other episodes have already been animated and I don't think those were motion captured (they might have been, but I can't remember hearing anything about that).

I wonder if the overall look will be the same across all the episodes or if we'll get totally different looking animation styles across the season.

With a raft of new service projects and a recent animated film release, the team at Australia’s Flying Bark Productions has been busier than ever. The Sydney-based outfit is producing the animation for three episodes of Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated What If…? The anthology series is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and features stories that present alternate realities in the Marvel universe. The show is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2021.

My husband compared the animation style to Into the Spiderverse...is it the same? It looked different to me...? I am looking forward to this, though.

I know that it's based on a series of comic books about "What If;" my husband was disappointed that Star Lord and Captain America were the only "swapped" characters.

It is different. Spider-Verse was key-framed whereas this was mo-capped which explains the stiffness. Both use non-photorealistic rendering though which is probably why your husband thought they looked similar.
