Galavant on Stage

Post by Sotiris »

Disney is considering adapting Galavant for the stage.

The cast talked about a potential stage adaptation.
Q: Is there going to be Galavant the Broadway show?

Timothy Omundson: I'm not going to say they're not talking about it. There's certainly been some conversations about that.

Q: Do you ever see this TV show on Broadway?

Timothy Omundson: Yeah. Actually, I'm pretty sure there's some conversations happening on some big corporate office in Disney. You know, there are conversations, I think, about it.

Karen David: There are. It makes sense. It totally translates to the stage.

Paul Lee, the president of ABC, also talked about a possible stage future for the series.
Lee also spoke of off-beat comedy series Galavant, which beat the odds to return for a second season. “It’s an adorable show,” Lee said. “The execution of the second season is really strong.” He also mentioned a potential Broadway future for the series.

"It's an adorable show," Paul Lee says of Galavant. Apparently schools want to get the rights to perform it. I love it.

Alan Menken finally confirmed a stage adaptation.
Alan Menken: GALAVANT is not continuing at ABC. But it will live on in so many ways. Guaranteed. Love to our cast, our writers, our fans!! Stay tuned...

Q: Can you say stage version? Please?

Alan Menken: YES!!

Q: Can there be a LIVE Galavant show? Have it tour as well!

John Hoberg: Hmmm...that sounds fun. Don't you think?

Alan Menken: Yes!!

The cancellation of ABC’s fairy tale musical comedy “Galavant” after two seasons came as no surprise to composer Alan Menken, who’s still competing for best song Emmy consideration with “A New Season” romp and exploring a potential stage spin-off.

“There are people in theatrical circles who think that young audiences in colleges and community theater will [go for this] over time,” said Menken. “So we have to figure out a way of bringing this to the stage. That’s where it is now.” “I look at my experience on ‘Newsies,'” Menken continued, “which was a hideous flop, and 20 years later it’s beyond a cult classic and that led to it becoming a [Tony Award-winning] Broadway show.”

Karen David reveals there have been talks about it since the first season.
Karen David wrote:I know [composer] Alan Menken was on social media talking about bringing the show to Broadway, and there have been talks about that. Right from season 1 there were talks about doing a Broadway show. Dan was saying to us that right now, that chapter with ABC might be finished, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that it might be finished elsewhere. That’s how we move forward, and we’ll just wait and see.

Joshua Sasse talks about the possibility of a stage adaptation.
Q: I'm hearing there's potential stage plans for it?

Joshua Sasse: Well, when we were in the studio that was definitely something they were always cognizant of. Alan Menken was doing Aladdin at the time. That had just come out. It was something we were always talking about. I don't know how real a possibility that is. I know people love the show and the music's very embedded in it. If that happens, that happens. I'm afraid I'm not privy to that information.

John Hoberg, the series showrunner, talks about the possibility of a stage adaptation.
Q: Alan Menken has been tweeting about a possible Galavant Broadway show. Is there the possibility of new life on stage for the series?

John Hoberg: Kat [Likkel, EP and writer] and I were just in New York hanging out with some people. The best way I can explain it is that this show can get under your skin and just won’t let you quit it. [laughs] I can’t really give specifics but I do know that people just don’t want it to go away. Truthfully, I think it would make an incredible stage play. There is already amazing music that we can expand upon. The hard part would be keeping the show under two hours.

Glenn Slater talks about the potential stage production.
Q: Odds of seeing a Galavant stage musical?

Glenn Slater: Maybe!

Glenn Slater: Had to cut the Annie & Aladdin references from the orphan song. 21 minutes just isn't enough, is it?

Q: Include them in the stage version you license to community theatre #hinthint

Glenn Slater: We might! #hinthint
Source: https://twitter.com/SlaterLyrics/status ... 6647224320
Q: There's been reports recently of plans to adapt GALAVANT to the stage. Is there anything you can tell us on that front?

Glenn Slater: Well, certainly, we're all dying to adapt it to the stage and we have a sort of vision for what the two hour and fifteen minute version of our 20-hour, two seasons worth of television would look like, how we can pull that into as tight a ball as possible and keep as many of the songs as possible. We have some ideas on how to do that. There's still some issues with sorting out the rights and who at ABC and Disney would be in charge of doing this and at what level are we going to do it at, so there's still a lot to look at. But I think it's pretty safe to say that it will happen in some form at some point, and hopefully as quickly as possible.

Glenn Slater wrote:Hopefully, “Galavant” has not yet breathed its last. There’s a huge campaign at the moment to try to get us another season – #moreGalavant. It’s been cancelled on ABC, but we’re hoping that we’ll maybe get a pickup from Hulu or Netflix so that we can continue that story. If not, Alan and I are certainly looking at bringing “Galavant” to the stage at some point.

Glenn Slater wrote:In the event that they decide not to go forward with it, we’re going to look at some other things that we can possibly do with it. Certainly, we’re going to look at if there's a way to get it on stage. Maybe there are other places that it can go as a show. Who knows?
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUDTIoVo_R4
Q: But there are definite plans for Broadway.

Glenn Slater: Can't say "definite" yet. Questions are being asked, avenues explored.
Source: https://twitter.com/SlaterLyrics/status ... 3838510080
Q: Any plans to bring back Galavant on another platform?

Glenn Slater: We’re certainly still talking about Galavant. We’ve already begun talking about how to make it work as a Broadway musical or stage show of some kind. Lots of ideas about that.
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0P3j90NLlY
Q: What about Galavant on Broadway?

Glenn Slater: Still a bunch of stuff to work out before we can start making that happen.
Source: https://twitter.com/SlaterLyrics/status ... 1218433024
Glenn Slater: Still talking about how to do it on stage.
Source: https://twitter.com/SlaterLyrics/status ... 5390322688
Q: Has there been any movement toward bringing GALAVANT to Broadway?

Glenn Slater: It's something we constantly talk about, and there are some rights issues that have to be smoothed out. It's definitely something that Alan and I want to do. We were just talking about it this week again. So there's nothing new to report there yet, but it's definitely something that we hope to move on to sometime soon. Whether or not it's directly to Broadway, I don't know, but definitely a stage version in some form. [...] Some version of GALAVANT - there's definitely room for that. So we're hoping to make that happen.
Source: http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/BW ... e-20170514
Q: There's rumors that [Galavant] might be heading to Broadway at some point. Is there any truth in them?

Glenn Slater: We've been talking to Dan Fogelman, the series creator, about what we can do with this live on stage. We're not sure how we boil nine hours of film into a two-hour musical but we have some ideas. So, we would love to make that happen. I think we're going to start talking to Disney about how to do that this summer, I think is the plan.

Q: So what are the chances & how soon could we expect Galavant the Broadway musical, 'cause that seems like a has-to-be. I'd love a revival of the series too, 'cause it is a beautiful, wondrous event that we need more of.

Glenn Slater: We all talk about it, all the time! The bottleneck is on the Disney end — we can't do it without them, and...apparently it's not a huge priority for them at the moment. We can't even get it onto Disney+, let alone Broadway!

I wouldn't be able to go, but I hope so. The same thing happened with Smash, I think?

This is unexpected news, at least for me. Quite frankly though, I'd prefer to see Enchanted or Pocahontas. Or better yet, Hunchback actually reaching Broadway.

Every Menken stage musical would be worthwhile in some way, but I would prefer Pocahontas, Hercules, Enchanted and Tangled getting the Broadway treatment first. Or Hunchback to get a proper Broadway version.
Favorite Disney-movies: Snow White, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan, Tarzan, Tangled, Frozen, Pirates, Enchanted, Prince of Persia, Tron, Oz The Great and Powerful

I get wanting different musicals more, but Galavant would have to happen now if it's going to happen. It's not like a Disney movie that has a built-in family audience and fans through re-releases. It's a TV show that's most likely just ended for good. If it's going to happen, it would have to happen now because why would Disney or Broadway be interested in it 5-10 years from now.

I always thought Enchanted was in a similar situation. Which is why I'm not surprised it hasn't been made since its relevance is gone, where I think they could've made a (brief) success of it if they'd made a show not long after the movie was put out.

EDIT: Aggravation. Why do I keep putting an unneeded apostrophe in my "its"'s!

Disenchanted, the sequel to Enchanted, was green-lit ever since Idina Menzel's success in Frozen so there's hope yet that Enchanted will be renewed in the public eye.

Oh, wow, I never thought there would be a possibility for a film version of Galavant. But I do hope he can manage to turn it into a reality one day.

I assumed by "theatrical" he meant stage adaptation, not movie adaptation. Now I'm not so sure.
