Philip Seymour Hoffman, Actor, Dies at 46
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/03/movie ... .html?_r=0
Philip Seymour Hoffman, one of the most critically acclaimed actors of his generation, was found dead in New York on Sunday morning of an apparent drug overdose.

Mr. Hoffman, 46, was found in an apartment in the West Village around 11:30 a.m. by a friend who had become concerned at not being able to reach Mr. Hoffman, a law enforcement official said.

Investigators found a syringe in his left forearm, at least two plastic envelopes with what appeared to be heroin nearby, and five empty plastic envelopes in a trash bin, the official said.

“It’s pretty apparent that it was an overdose,” the official said. “The syringe was in his arm.”

ArtsBeat: Philip Seymour Hoffman Is Remembered by Fellow Actors on TwitterFEB. 2, 2014

On Sunday afternoon, Mr. Hoffman’s family released a statement saying: “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers.”

As news of Mr. Hoffman’s death spread, fellow actors as well as fans took to Twitter to express their admiration for his acting and grief over his death. Ellen DeGeneres, who will host the Oscars ceremony in March over which Mr. Hoffman’s death is likely to cast a pall, posted: “Philip Seymour Hoffman was a brilliant, talented man. The news this morning is shocking and sad. My heart goes out to his loved ones.”

Mr. Hoffman won an Academy Award in 2006 for best actor for his role in the film “Capote,” in which he portrayed the author Truman Capote as Mr. Capote researched the book “In Cold Blood.”

Known for his scene-stealing supporting roles, Mr. Hoffman was nominated for the Academy Award for best supporting actor three times: for the 2012 film “The Master,” the 2008 film “Doubt,” and the 2007 film “Charlie Wilson’s War.” He also recently had a role in the hugely popular “The Hunger Games” films.

Last May, Variety reported that Mr. Hoffman had completed a detox program for substance abuse, including snorting heroin. He had struggled with alcohol and drugs as a young man and told the CBS program ‘'60 Minutes” in 2006 that he had been sober since he was 22.

Mr. Hoffman had been acting in films for the last two decades, often transforming physically for each new role. He was prolific as well, sometimes filming several movies in a year and appearing in plays on Broadway.

“I try to live my life in such a way that I don’t have profound regrets,” Mr. Hoffman told The New York Times in 2008. “That’s probably why I work so much. I don’t want to feel I missed something important.”

Mr. Hoffman had three young children, a son and two daughters, with his partner, Mimi O’Donnell, a costume designer.

Outside the apartment building where Mr. Hoffman was found on Bethune Street, more than 100 people had gathered Sunday afternoon to mourn the actor’s death. Near the crowd, two men who identified themselves as friends of Mr. Hoffman embraced and cried.

“He’s a local. He’s a fixture in this neighborhood,” said Christian McCulloch, 39, who said that he lives nearby. “You see him with his kids in the coffee shops. He is so sweet. It’s desperately sad.”

I'm sure I've seen him in several movies that I just can't remember right off, but I know him mostly from Doubt (with Meryl Streep). I didn't know he had been in The Hunger Games, but I haven't seen the second one yet. Very sad.

Rest in peace.

Yeah he's in the second Hunger Games Movie, and Part one of Mocking Jay Has been filmed completely and he's in that too though I'm not sure what's going to go on with Mocking Jay Part Two as right now it's currently filming because both Part 1 and 2 are happening Back to Back. Very Sad news indeed to a very talented actor.

I actually remember the first Movie I saw with him in was Patch Adams. He was actually also in Twister

Here's the trailer that has Philip Seymour Hoffman in it. The Second Hunger Games comes to Blu Ray in March and I suggest you rent it when it comes out. It was an amazing movie

I was so stunned by this news. This is a staggering loss for film fans. Personally, I haven't been this affected by a 'celebrity' death since Roger Ebert... Mr. Hoffman was one of my favorite actors. His roles in Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski, Magnolia, Almost Famous, Red Dragon, Capote, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead and The Master will continue to remain some of my favorites. It's so damned tragic. I think the obit in TIME summed it up best. "Most deaths feel like a great loss. This feels like a robbery." (I'm paraphrasing that. May not have it exactly right, but, you get the gist of it.) RIP.

I was also shocked to learn that the great Peter O'Toole died in December! I had no idea until I read about it in one of the many PSH obituaries... I guess O'Toole's death got overshadowed by Paul Walker and all the hoopla surrounding that. So, a belated RIP to Mr. O'Toole as well. (Another of my favorites!) :(

Apparently for the final Hunger Games film, they only had 7 days worth of shooting and one important pivotal scene to be done, so they are going to digitally put him in the parts that still needed to be filmed.

Also his will has been revealed

Philip Seymour Hoffman will: I want my son to be a New Yorker
Philip Seymour Hoffman had little love for L.A. -- at least as far as his last will and testament indicates.
In his 2004 will, the Oscar-winning actor gave direction on where he wanted son Cooper, then his only child, to be raised in his absence. Missing from the list was the home of Hollywood.

“It is my strong desire ... that my son, Cooper Hoffman, be raised and reside in or near the borough of Manhattan in the state of New York, or Chicago, Illinois, or San Francisco, California,” he wrote in the document, obtained by outlets including TMZ and the New York Post, which has it posted online.

If Cooper's guardian couldn't live in any of those places, for whatever reason, Hoffman requested that the boy visit each for at least two weeks a year.

"The purpose of this request is so that my son will be exposed to the culture, arts and architecture that such cities offer," he wrote.

Ouch, Angelenos, that has to sting a bit.

Hoffman left the bulk of his estate to longtime girlfriend Mimi O'Donnell, the mother of his children, and provided a trust to be given to Cooper, now 10 -- half when he turns 21 and the other half when he turns 30. He also named O'Donnell executrix of the estate.

The "Capote" star had two daughters as well, Tallulah, 7 and Willa, 5.

He was residing separately from O'Donnell when he was found dead Feb. 2 in the bathroom of his New York City apartment of an apparent heroin overdose. The official cause of death is still undetermined pending toxicology results. He was 46.

The will was filed Wednesday morning in Manhattan Surrogate’s Court.
