Since this thread's already on the first page anyway, I thought I'd do another ranking of their films:

1. Kiki's Delivery Service
2. Princess Mononoke
3. Spirited Away
4. My Neighbors the Yamadas
5. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
6. The Castle of Cagliostro
7. When Marnie Was There
8. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
9. Whisper of the Heart
10. Howl's Moving Castle ~ I can't love it as much as the book simply because of how different Howl is (Sophie and Howl's relationship doesn't draw me in the same way with that change), but there are a lot of great things here as its own thing. Their Witch of the Waste is a great character and I love the theme. The ending version is really beautiful.
11. Tales from Earthsea
12. Only Yesterday
13. Castle in the Sky
14. Porco Rosso
15. From Up on Poppy Hill
16. Grave of the Fireflies
17. The Wind Rises
18. Mary and the Witch's Flower
19. My Neighbor Totoro
20. Ponyo
21. The Red Turtle
22. Arrietty
23. The Cat Returns

Ocean Waves and Pom Poko are the only ones I haven't seen. I know Mary and the Witch's Flower and TRT are cheating, but I think of them as Ghibli films. I hope How Do You Live? turns out great... :(

^I'm not going to rank them, because it's been a while since I saw some of the films, but Kiki's Delivery Service is my favorite Ghibli film too. Howl's Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro are also among my favorites. Pom Poko, however, has to be my least favorite one, though I have to admit that I find its songs catchy and I've listened to them several times. I don't remember Ocean Waves much, so I guess it didn't leave a big impression on me, but I think it wasn't bad either.

I agree, that song is beautiful. Though I like the one the same composer wrote for Spirited Away a bit more. I also love the songs from Kiki's Delivery Service, though if I'm not mistaken, they weren't originally written for the film.

Ghibli is releasing its first CG feature film this winter. Really disappointed that the powers at be at Ghibli have allowed this to happen.

This is indeed depressing for the future of traditional animation at Ghibli :(

Hayao Miyazaki's next film is going to be 2D, but it will probably be the last one.

It's going direct to air on NHK, "Japan's national broadcasting organization." And it's a production partnership between Studio Ghibli & NHK. So I wonder what that means as far as no more 2D @ Ghibli, since maybe NHK wanted it in CGI? I guess we'd need to read more about the creative side to see who's idea it was to be in CG...

The director, Goro Miyazaki, seems fascinated by CG animation. He also directed the TV series Ronja: The Robber's Daughter which was CG as well. My guess is Goro asked for it to be CG and Suzuki approved it. But given how the industry is going in Japan with CG constantly gaining more ground in serial and feature filmmaking coupled with Hayao Miyazaki retiring after How Do You Live, I don't see 2D animation having much of a future at the studio (if Ghibli doesn't shut down completely, that is.)

Me as well, actually! I'm sad they're giving up on hand-drawn animation now, but at least the design doesn't look as bland as the majority of Disney's and PIXAR's 3D films do. For some reason the lady with the red hair reminds me of Susan Egan's character in Porco Rosso.

Bit late replying to this, but on Cartoon Brew some commenters (who presumably have experience in CG animation) did write that the modelling and rendering look subpar. Still, I can't say I dislike those images, and would like to see the animation in motion before passing judgement.

Controversial new Studio Ghibli trailer leaves fans unhappy
https://www.creativebloq.com/amp/news/s ... gi-trailer

I watched part of the trailer just now on my phone, and it does look like it's missing something, like it's not fully complete? But a phone is just a tiny screen so I'll have to watch on the computer to get a better look...

I hope they get so much backlash from fans, they never dare make another CG feature again.

Even though the dubbing looks a little off at the moment, I think this trailer allows one to appreciate the animation a lot better as the editing on the Japanese preview was way too fast-paced and hyperactive. Goro Miyazaki is definitely trying to emulate the signature Ghibli style in computer animation and seems to be doing an okay job with that.

I think it's also important to remember this is a made-for-tv movie, so it's not going to have the budget of a Pixar or DreamWorks production or that recent CG Lupin movie that was released in Japan recently.

^ Thanks for posting that! I am interested in the story...the dubbing doesn't seem great, huh? I guess I've never seen a dubbed CGI film, just other Ghibli & Japanese films, so maybe the mouths not being in sync with the words is more jarring for this reason...?
