In the article below, the technique used in Tom & Jerry is explained, and while their effort to add a 2D aesthetic is appreciated, the end result is quite underwhelming. It boggles the mind the lengths directors and other creatives will go just to avoid using 2D animation.

Well apparently, Space Jam: A New Legacy IS going to use 2D animation again this time. IIRC, Tony Bancroft confirmed it on his Twitter account. I think he said there would be 20 minutes of it in the film (and despite the presence of some CG in the film, they ARE marketing the characters as their 2D counterparts, as they should), but he said he DID do 2D animation on it.

And apparently they used ToonBoom to make the animated sequences. This should be something interesting.

New Trailer will drop on Saturday. This promo uses 2D animation.

I'm sorry to say this but I have no excitement over this. As much as I want 2D to become successful again, I have no desire to watch it in a subpar movie like the Space Jam sequel (just like I didn't care about the 2D looking CGI of Tom and Jerry). Even the first Space Jam wasn't that good and was basically only made to promote Michael Jordan's shoes.

I'm not saying that I think Space Jam: A New Legacy will be a great movie by any means (I myself have little expectations for it), but I thought it would be nice to bring it up here in this thread. I actually might go see it just to show support (and besides, I am fond of Looney Tunes). I only didn't go see TOM AND JERRY because of the terrible reviews, but I'm gonna make an exception for this one.

That said, check this out:

This is a trailer for Mamoru Hosoda's newest film, BELLE. While American studios seem to have lost faith in 2D animation, the Japanese have not. This movie is proof of it. Actually, it looks like a mixture of 2D and 3D. Apparently it's coming this July in Japan.

The movie looks like it's going to be a feature length commercial for HBO Max. But it's fine, even the first one was basically a commercial.

Is that.... is that an extra dressed as Bette Davis as Baby Jane??? lol

I’m kinda curious to see all the classic movie references and stuff. I see there’s a “Wizard of Oz” planet and there was a press release which name dropped Casablanca. Harmless, silly fluff— like the first movie.

Looks quite fun. It seems kind of like WB's own Ralph Breaks the Internet just hopefully not as obnoxious.

I think it is WB’s third Ralph Breaks the Internet-esque film. They started the trend with The Lego Movie and there was also Ready Player One.

Sam gets to shoot his guns because the rule only applies to television.

^Oh, I didn't know that there were different rules for TV and film-- do you know why that is? Is it due to the MPAA or something?

I'm not 100% sure the reason, but its been long theorized by super fans and suggested by those involved that this is the case. I dont think its been outright officially stated or the reasons, but you can look at the patterns that have emerged and come to the same general conclusion. the looney tunes show even had an unaired pilot where elmer shot his gun, with the big caveat being that it had to be a paintball gun. Meanwhile theatrical shorts like Daffy's Rhapsody elmer can shoot to his hearts content.

For more on this though, I'd suggest checking out this video.

I enjoyed the 2D animated bits in the trailer, but my biggest problem is that WB didn't show enough of it. I'll still go see it just to show my love of 2D, but I wish WB had a bit more guts rather than playing it too safe. Nonetheless, a bit of 2D animation is better than none at all. Here's hoping we can build that bridge back to its relevance.

Haha I saw the Baby Jane extra! Hilarious! But did you know The Wicked Witch of the West will be in this film? That's why I wanna see it!

That animation is freaking beautiful! Love the song, too.

That was interesting, thank you. Looney Tunes isn't being entirely consistent with the violence, and I wonder if Elmer would've been allowed to do that gun-canoe gag with Bugs instead of Daffy...would that have mattered?

Ooh, interesting. So veterans from both studios are working on this too? That's pretty neat.
