I'm actually pretty excited about Epic. I agree, it looks a lot like FernGully, but I have no love for that movie. I can ignore that part. It also looks like there's going to be cringe-worthy humor. I'm intrigued enough by the storyline to overlook it, though.

Blue Sky's animation is really getting better. I'm a sucker for flora (I love drawing plants and gardening), and all the plant life in the trailer is beautiful! Same with the hummingbirds and the plant people things.

It makes me sad that no one on this forum really discusses non-Disney movies.

Right. Everyone says how much they're fans of animation, but aside from the next Disney or Pixar film, they don't get really excited.

I for one think "Epic" had/has the best trailer by far compared to all the other animated films that have released their trailers. Cringe-worthy humor aside, it truly feels/looks epic. The animation looks incredibly gorgeous. The only down side I find this movies has is that it is going to be plagued by Blue Sky's humor. While sometimes it's good, it's mostly really childish and lack sophistication found in Pixar or Dreamworks movies. I really hope this film is more on the lines of "Robots," which I think is their best film to date. It has that potential. I too hate "Ferngully" and think this movie has a lot more to offer than that movie. But regardless, I am pretty excited for this film as it is my 3rd most anticipated animated film of the year right behind "The Croods"(#2) and "Frozen"(#1).

I too believe this is going to be a really good film. I've often thought that if they made a Robots 2 it would do extremely well, that movie was a marvel, visually and it had a really good story, but seems to be under appreciated (I could be wrong).

Yep, this is my most anticipated animated film of the year. I think Blue Sky is kind of an underdog studio in the animation world as aside from the later Ice Age sequels, they do some great work. My personal favourite of theirs is Rio, though. I just love the energy, characters, animation and music of that film and I'm very excited for the sequel.

And it's interesting you both bring up Robots, since the story and look of both Epic and Robots was conceived by illustrator William Joyce (you may also recall him as the creator of Rollie Pollie Ollie and Rise of the Guardians and Meet the Robinsons were also based on his stories).

Yup, I do like William Joyce's sense of visual style. I think he is brillant and so far I've liked all is adaptions/works. "Rollie Pollie Ollie" was one of my favorite shows growing up and "Rise of the Guardians" was among my top 10 movies of last year. I think you're right about Blue Sky being an underdog studio, but I think if they were more consistent with their work, they could be easily consider part of the "big 4 american animation studios." However, their films do tend to do extremely well abroad.

Well, I absolutely loved Rio, it was probably my favourite animated film of that year. It also had, what I consider, the best use of 3D. They gave the film depth with the use of 3D. The algorithm for converting to 3D must be a really good one. To be honest, it's the only film in which I can remember the 3D being used effectively.

I'd forgotten William Joyce was involved with those other projects, it's quite interesting. And when I say forgotten, I vaguely remember his name in regards to those projects from special features and reading general news about them, but if I heard the name William Joyce (with no reference to any projects) a year or so ago, it probably wouldn't have rung any bells.

You could definitely call Blue Sky an underdog studio. People are always talking about Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks, but they are more exposed and have larger libraries because of heritage and/or output and people often miss out on real gems because of this. It's often perception (I'm sure Ponyo would have done wonders (depends on marketing as well)) and after seeing Robots I would have thought it would have done twice the box office numbers it did.
