Re: You can still get that doll.

Post by Cheshire_Cat »

Jackoleen wrote:Dear Cheshire_Cat,

You could either buy the doll online, or you could just buy the doll in the store, anyway, and if anybody gave you a bad time, you could just say, "My little sister/ cousin just had a major surgery, and she wants this doll more than anything in the world!", or "My little sister/ cousin is really sick, and I know that this doll will cheer her up!", or "My cousin in Montana (?) just turned 5, and I know that her mom will not get this doll for her, 'cause she just got Furlowed." If any of THOSE responses don't make the offender feel guilty, I don't know what to tell you to do.

I used to catch flack for buying dolls, and I'm a girl. When I was in college, I had to hide from my cousin's wife whenever we were both in the store, because she didn't agree with the idea of a woman enjoying dolls. I'd have to hide myself, or hide any dolls that I'd chosen, or put them back quickly, or whatever. I was miserable.

I know that if you polled all of the parents who buy toys for their kids, at least half of them would admit that they at least WISH that they could relive their own childhoods, were that option ever to be socially acceptable. Why do you think that so many doll companies always use such phrases as "The doll that's just as lovable to your child as she was to you.", "She's as pretty as you remember, and prettier!", "Creating quality dolls that bring back the memories of yesteryear.", etc.?

The fact that doll enthusiasts (and I don't just mean people who lock NRFB dolls in dark closets, hoping to make their fortunes later, or to keep those dolls in their boxes forever) must somehow force themselves to be a "closeted" group is just sick, but it's nearly always true.

Doll collecting is the 2nd largest hobby in America, and yet adult doll collectors are still being made to feel guilty for loving dolls, even as the hobby is becoming more popular all of the time, and even as the Japanese are inventing the robots who will someday be our companions. Dolls are the wave of the future.

So, I say that you should do whatever you think is right. If you really, really want that Belle doll, you should be able to choose whichever example of her you want, at The Disney Store, if that's what you really want to do.

Thank you in advance for your reply.
Thank you for your well-thought out response, Jackoleen.

I have two problems, though. I still live with my parents, and I don't know if they themselves would approve of my purchasing dolls. I probably would have gotten away with it if I were a lot younger, but now, it'll probably be irksome for them.

Also, the Disney Store at the nearest mall seems to have closed down recently, and I don't know of any others nearby. I can't purchase them online, either.

So sorry ! I stand corrected Disney Villain ! I just youtubed the doll .... and it does sound just like Susan, and obviously they have confirmed its her on her website. Just the one in the UK Disney store sounded so ..... well, different ! Maybe the doll's battery was running down or something, but it sounded AWFUL. Which is sadly how Paige sounds now to me as Belle. That youtube clip of Susan as the doll sounded so much better.

Sorry again for doubting you.

I was in my local Disney Store yesterday and I noticed they have released new dolls for supporting characters from "the princess films", and they are all pretty nice!

They've released The Fairy Godmother (Cinderella), King Triton, The genie, and Charlotte. This past year they also released Ursula, and I'm hoping they plan on releasing more villains but I thought these other characters were a very pleasant surprise!

These dolls aren't available on disneystore.com yet, but I'm making a trip into Chicago this afternoon so I'll check out the Michigan Ave. Store and take some pics with my phone assuming they'll have them! :)

Just for the record, since I suppose people who read this thread are interested in Disney dolls, ha, I have a bunch of mine up for sale at my comic strip's website on the merchandise page:

http://moonlightmotelcomic.com/merchandise.html

It was going to be only a 2 week sale, but since I'm still here at my parents' house, it's still going. I may add a bunch of Disney Store beanies and plushies soon too.

Alright, so I spent last night in Chicago (which was a ton of fun on new year's eve) but I went by the Disney Store on Michigan Ave, which is one of my favorite Disney Stores ever! They had the new dolls and even had them priced down with all the others to $9.50 so I picked up the Fairy Godmother and King Triton because I love their characters and it's hard to find any merch for them. Here are some pictures of them.

Fairy Godmother
<a href="http://s395.photobucket.com/albums/pp31 ... G_2188.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp31 ... G_2188.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

King Triton
<a href="http://s395.photobucket.com/albums/pp31 ... G_2189.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp31 ... G_2189.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Charlotte
<a href="http://s395.photobucket.com/albums/pp31 ... G_2190.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp31 ... G_2190.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Genie
<a href="http://s395.photobucket.com/albums/pp31 ... G_2191.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp31 ... G_2191.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

As wonderful as it is to see them, there are a few things I don't like. After opening the Fairy Godmother I discovered that her entire bottom half is plush. They didn't give her legs! Her arms also don't move from the position they are in. They did give her a full head of hair though (which is freakin adorable lol) and you can pull her hood back if you want.

Triton's upper half is completely plastic and I don't like how his hair and beard are more gray than white. His torso is also small when compared to Eric and Ariel, which is really funny because he's SO much larger than them in the movie. His tail is plush, but that's ok to me. I like that his tail actually looks like a fish tail as opposed to Ariel's tails which are always made of tulle.

I HATE that Genie's arms are frozen in a crossed formation. I mean, really? Why not just make his arms adjustable like Triton's? The same can be said for Fairy Godmother too. Genie's legs are also plush, which seems to be a common trend at this point.

Charlotte is the only one who appears to be a typical doll and seems pretty neat. If I'm going to pick up any more just to have on my Disney shelf, she'll be next!

Yeah, Triton would be better with bigger muscles (like in the film), but it's better than nothing, I guess. I'd really like to have that. :P

Charlotte looks like Tinker Bell thrown in a pink dress.

Haha! I hadn't noticed that! They also have a new Tinkerbell doll that's in a box like these other new dolls. This gives me hope that they'll start doing some other characters too (like Cruella or Alice). Speaking of Cruella, since they made Ursula and seemingly decided to continue making her through this year I would really hope they'd consider making the rest of the villains available. I would seriously pick them all up in a heartbeat, especially Maleficent.

I also forgot to mention that they have started selling 2 versions of Aladdin as well. One of him is the "Street Rat" and the other is as Prince Ali". I wish they'd consider doing this with The Beast too. Making the beast and prince versions of him 2 separate items. The Beast head they stick on the prince doll looks ridiculous.

No problem at all! I just get really excited whenever characters outside of the mainstream franchises get merchandise.

I also got super excited about all the plushes they've made for Lady and the Tramp! They've basically made most of the dogs in the film available as nice sized plushes as well as Si and Am.

They've also started producing small plush side-kicks for all the princesses. Grumpy and Dopey for Snow White, Meeko for Pocahontas, The 3 fairies for Aurora, Flounder and Sebastian for Ariel, and some others but those are the only ones that come to mind.

Gosh, I'd swear that the Charlotte doll was made from the Tinker Bell mould ?? It looks TOO simmilar not to be !

Thank you for sharing the photos ... Shame that Triton was made of foam on his tail though.

That would have been awesome!

I actually got Jafar, Maleficent, Captain Hook and Evil Queen dolls from a line called "Disney Villains". Bought in the Disney Store at Champs-Élysées in Paris back in 2004. They are not sold any longer I think, but I remember to have seen them at a Disney Store in London as well.

Cruella was also a part of the collection, but I don't like her so I did not buy her. Can't remember if there were any more villains... Ursula, perhaps?

Villains that should/could be in a Disney villain line:
Evil Queen
(Lady Tremaine)
(The Queen of Hearts)
Captain Hook
Maleficent
Ursula
(Gaston)
Jafar
Frollo
Hades
(Shan Yu)
(Clayton)
Mother Gothel
Favorite Disney-movies: Snow White, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan, Tarzan, Tangled, Frozen, Pirates, Enchanted, Prince of Persia, Tron, Oz The Great and Powerful

I also saw a line of Disney Dolls that included those villains. I bought a Maleficent doll years ago at the Disney store. It would be cool if they included the villains! I would also add Dr. Facilier to the doll lineup. Maybe Yzma to becasue she seems to be pretty popular.

That Triton doll is actually a repackaged Triton doll from Germany's Simba Toys.

They also made an Ursula doll:

Very interesting!

Did Simba Toys also make any other characters? Are they responsible for Genie, Charlotte, and Fairy Godmother as well? And are there any other character's they've made we have not seen yet?

I ask because The Disney Store started selling that same Ursula last year, and all of the new characters are made similarly with hard plastic torso's and soft plush bottoms.

I also ask because I would really love to see more characters made in general. This is making me want to collect all the princess dolls because of all the characters haha.

Being German, I remember seeing a Ariel and Prince Eric set (Prince Eric used a Steffi Love Kevin head mold not a Disney one, if I remember correctly), and they also I think had a Jasmine (possibly including Aladdin) set. There was also a Ariel/baby Ariel bath time set, years ago. They might have had single boxes of the others but I was paying more mind to the Prince Caspian toys :D

What Judah Ben-Hur said. They also had this really great set of Snow White and all seven dwarfs, as well as standard Disney Princess dolls (which are nowhere to be found on their website at the moment, which makes me wonder if their licensing deal with Disney expired). As for Charlotte, Fairy Godmother and Genie, no, those were not made by Simba Toys.

Re: Disney Dolls

Stumbled upon this, I thought it'd be interesting to fans and/or collectors of Disney dolls:

Image

It's a Mattel's prototype for a Fantasia centaurette that never went into mass production. I believe it originates from the early '90s when Mattel and Disney first started collaborating. The doll uses the 1987 Skipper sculpt.

Other Mattel's unproduced Disney dolls for which prototypes exist:
- the Prince from Snow White - the rest of the cast got their dolls but the Prince was somehow excluded
- Robin Hood from The Story of Robin Hood
- Tiger Lily, the Chief, a mermaid from Peter Pan, and a Nana plush
- Zorro from Zorro
- Ariel that also uses the 1987 Skipper sculpt - I assume this never went into production because Tyco was still making Ariel dolls at the time

Mooky, how neat! And what a missed opportunity! Are these other prototypes available view online anywhere?
