Is there a new Music Man DVD coming out soon?

Post by The_Iceflash »

I know right now all that's released is the 1999 DVD and the Blu-ray release that came out a week ago. Is there going to finally be a good DVD release or is it going to get the shaft?

The 1999 DVD is good enough, a/v and supplement-wise. The new Blu-Ray is a new HD transfer, but the same supplements. If there is a new DVD, it'll probably be a re-issue of the 1999 disc in Amaray packaging instead of the old snapper case.

Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for Warner to release that big ole Show Boat box set they've been promising for years.

I've got the Complete Show Boat on Laserdisc... I don't remember what extras it has, other than a CD soundtrack, but it had the 1929, 1936, 1946, and 1951 versions of the film. It may be that those were pretty much the extras.

Since the Blu-Ray Music Man has the same extras, I'm thinking there won't be a new DVD version. If they do come out with a new version, it will be Blu only. Just as well, I'd hate to rebuy the DVD since Blu has taken over. I'll probably get the Blu one of these days, once I get my PS3 working (and the spare cash to rebuy a title). I'll be glad to get rid of the dvd snapper case.

It's funny, I just watched The Music Man a week or two ago, and then I saw Robert Preston in The Last Starfighter!

I've been dying to get the Irene Dunne version of "Show Boat" for years... As for "The Music Man", I doubt Warners would release a new version on DVD, seeing as their current DVD is still a steady seller. Besides, they seem more interested in pushing the Archives series... :roll:

According to LDDB, the supplements were mostly audio tracks:
  • * Sides 1 and 2: Show Boat (1929) B&W, 118 min., Mono silent with orchestral score
    * Sides 3 and 4: Show Boat (1936) B&W, 113 min., Mono
    * Sides 5 and 6: Show Boat (1951) Color, 107 min., Stereo (newly remixed for this release)
    Analog Left contains the Ava Gardner recordings (not used in the final film)
    Analog Right contains commentary from director George Sidney
    * Side 7 (CAV): Supplement includes the Show Boat sequence (15 minutes) from Till the Clouds Roll By (1946), two trailers from the 1951 version, and a still gallery. Also, the analog tracks of Sides 1 - 3 contain audio portion only of the prologue to the 1929 version, and test recordings and the unedited pre-recordings for the 1951 version.
I'd love for these extras to be on the DVD/Blu-Ray, along with some new stuff common for Warner DVDs (vintage shorts/cartoons, newsreels, other trailers) and a comprehensive documentary about all the Show Boat.

Anyway, back on topic of The Music Man, I agree that the DVD likely won't be revisited. And like I said before, if it is, it'll probably just be new packaging.

I've seen quite a few DVDs come out where the laserdiscs had special audio stuff, and thiey don't always put it on the DVD.

I *THINK* Snow White was that way, it seems like there were some audio tracks that didn't get carried over, although I'm not sure what they were now. For that matter, I forget if the Diamond Edition left out something that was on the Platinum Edition (or had other stuff not on the PE.)
