Post by Jake Lipson »

Oscar nominations are in (and firstly, NO, Finding Nemo is NOT a Best Picture nominee, so Beauty and the Beast still holds the first-and-only record.)

<b>FINDING NEMO</b>

LOST IN TRANSLATION

Good luck, Nemo! I hope you find the deserved Oscar glory! Good luck, Pirates of the Caribbean! Let's hope you loot Johny Depp his first Oscar, and some other awards too!

And of course good luck to everyone else, too. I'm hoping LOTR sweeps all of its categories but am really upset that none of the actors got a nomination (especially Sean Austin.)

All Oscar noms can be seen <a href=http://www.oscar.com/nominees/nomineelist.html target=blank>here</a>.

All right! Go Nemo! Go Nemo! It's your birthday. I hope Nemo wins animated feature film. Kinda disappointed that it's not nominated for Best Picture but oh well. We can't have EVERYTHING we want now can we?

Well, too bad PotC is gonna get knocked around by RotK in every category it's nominated. Hopefully one of those nods will come through.

I can't deny I'm happy becase of that! Long live "Beauty"! :D

I really wish "Brother Bear" would grab the Best Animated Feature award, but it seems the least likely to win. :(

I'm glad "City of God" got all the nominations it did, but I'm still surprised they didn't give it a "Best Foreing Language Picture" nomination.

Unfortunately, ROTK did not recieve any acting nominations (which seems to mean that the Academy STILL only sees it as a CGI spectacle, which is a shame) so I think Johny Depp will win his Oscar for Captain Jack Sparrow. Otherwise, yeah, I'm expecting ROTK to win all of its 11 (!) categories. It really got snubbed though as far as the acting goes. Sean Austin deserved Best Supporting Actor. And BIG FISH got SNUBBED! The score was great, but really, that's its only nomination? It was better than that.

No way Depp will beat Bill Murray, nor should he, in my opinion. Though Depp's performance was entertaining. If Murray doesn't get it, Sean Penn will.

WOW!!!! Cold Mountain got shut out from the Best Picture oscar nom!!

Glad to see Seabiscuit in there - that deserves a nomination.

Also happy to see Depp get an acting nom. Didn't expect that, but its certainly deserved.

Big Fish should've gotten Cinematography for sure. The scene where "time stops" is the most beautiful scene of the year.

It's running before certain theatrical prints of "Calendar Girls" and will be coming to DVD sometime later this year.

I'm absolutely shocked that Cold Mountain didn't get a best picture oscar. I never saw the movie but it has all the ingredients that scream "oscar".

Pretty cool that POTC got all those nominations, though I'll be rooting for LOTR: ROTK over it. :P

Oh, yeah, Big Fish got snubbed big time. Exellent film that mixes the reality the Academy so loves with the fantasy they seem to disregard (which is why I'm guessing it got ignored.) But I would have given it a Best Picture nom myself. Cinematography definately, and also definately Best Editing. The way they successfully balanced the fantasy stories and the grounded reality of it was great. It's the same quality found in Secondhand Lions. Very disappointed to see Big Fish unimportant to the Academy (although I would've rooted for ROTK over it anyway.)

I'm surprised Depp's been nominated. It's not an "Oscar" performance [*] and I'm certain the nomination is more to do with the Academy acknowledging their past indiscretions to Depp in previous ceremonies. (I'm still bitter Depp got no recognition for Edward Scissorhands or Ed Wood).

As for Lord of the Rings, it was obvious from the Fellowship of the Ring that the final "chapter" would get all the acclaim from the Academy. Personally, I'm not sure Peter Jackson deserves best director (!), as now more than ever there's a blur between actual directing and simply technical co-ordination. I'm by no means suggesting Jackson is a 'hack' or anywhere near it (so please don't hate me!), but I'd rather have the best Director award won by a director who has a small budget, small cast and just a couple of cameras. After all, the bigger the film, the bigger the crew and creative staff. It's hard to judge a director on what is obviously a massive collaboration with hundreds (if not thousands) of individual's input. I wonder if the Academy Awards need to categories for directing these days…?

[*] Sorry, but it's not. He doesn't stand a snowball's chance of winning, it's not the performance the Academy looks for.

The category is Best Actor, not "Best Performance in a Drama". Depp was sensational, his performance is probably one of the most indelible and popular star turns since Tom Hanks' work in Forrest Gump. I think the race is between Sean Penn and Bill Murray, with Murray being the sentimental favorite, but if Murray and Penn split the vote, then he *does* have a chance at winning. No one thought Marcia Gay Harden had a chance for Pollack either. "Best Actor" is going to be one of the more suspenseful categories to watch this year.
