UK Treasure Planet - No commentary?

Post by 2099net »

Germany gets a twin pack of the Treasure Planet DVD and the PC game. And yes, like France (but not Austrilia - so one assumes the UK too) Germany gets a DTS soundtrack on their disc:

Not so crazy over that cover.

Bad news for R2 UK Treasure Planet fans:

It looks like the UK release will not have the commentary track:

See http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=News&id=4519 (and thanks to Whiggles for pointing out what I missed in the PR.

http://www.r2-dvd.org/article.jsp?secti ... cleId=5487 is also missing the commentary listing.

Why do BVUK keep doing this to us? Do they think we wont listen/watch it. There wasn't the commentaries on Dumbo, Tarzan and don't get me started on all the stuff they left off Fantasia. :x

Well, it's possible that the missing commentary track was a PR omission - but as Matty says, the UK has missed out on Disney commentaries in the past. The UK single disc "Roger Rabbit" being the most recent example (but again the commentary for Roger Rabbit is on the French release - go figure!?!)

Looking at Blackstar Listing for the Treasure Planet ( http://www.blackstar.co.uk/video/item/7000000080044 ) it again doesn't list a commentary.

More strange is the fact that the disc is not a copy of the Australian disc, featuring as it does Russian soundtrack and subtitles. (As did the UK release of "Signs" - another Buena Vista title) This makes me think it is more than possible that the commentary could be missing (before I assumed the UK release would be a copy of the Australian release)

Being as the Australian disc is in English, PAL format, is R2 compatible (one would assume from the soundtracks and subtitles listed), out now and cheaper then the proposed UK disc, I would recommend everyone imports the Australian disc, or they could go for the current French disc that fully supports the English language (but omits the trailers)

R4 Listing Here:
http://www.atlanticdvd.com.au/view.cfm?id=5465

R4 Review here:
http://www.allzone4dvd.net/review_details.htm?id=408

both confirming the presence of the commentary track

Ps. I've altered the title heading of this thread, as this could be a big issue for UK readers.

I can also confirm that the Australian release has the Visual commentary, although I haven't actually clicked on it yet.
I find it very strange that the UK copy would be missing the commentary, as the UK and Aussie discs tend to be identical in every way. For that reason, we missed out on the commentary tracks on the other things the UK missed out on.
Perhaps, as 2099 suggested, there has been a PR error on the part of Disney UK, as I can't see any reason they would not use the same transfer we have.
I'd also like to add the following link to the list of Aussie reviews:

This does a comparison with other regions as well, but much of the info is what has been posted here.

From www.michaeldvd.com.au:
The Region 4 DVD misses out on:

An extra, titled Release, which includes trailers and posters for the movie
Up-front commercials
Very strange that the R4 is missing the trailer - the UK press release lists the trailer. It's clear that in this case the the UK disc is different from the Australian release.

The French disc manages to keep the Visual Commentary even though it has an extra soundtrack (2 DD 5.1 tracks plus a 5.1 DTS track against the UK's reported 2 DD 5.1 tracks), but also omits the trailer (although I assumed this was because the disc has an extra music video - "Un Homme Libre", the French language version of "I'm Still Here").

It will be interesting to see how this does play out in the end.
