http://imdb.com/news/wenn/2007-10-04/ (scroll to bottom)Comedienne Whoopi Goldberg has announced she is retiring from acting to concentrate on her broadcasting career. The Oscar-winning star, 52, who replaced Rosie O'Donnell on long-running daytime show The View last month, insists there's "no room" for her in Hollywood anymore - because there are younger, more glamorous actresses taking all the jobs. Goldberg, who has made more than 40 films in her career, winning an Oscar for her role in Ghost, claims she has no choice but to retire from movies - because she never gets sent scripts anymore. She tells talk show host Larry King, "You know, there's no room for the very talented Whoopi. There's no room right now in the marketplace of cinema."
This is really sad news. We've talked about Whoopi retiring from radio and making the leap to "The View" on here and many of us were worried that it would keep her away from any potential movie roles that might come along. I guess those roles simply aren't coming and won't be anytime soon. This is a testament to the shortage of black roles in Hollywood, as well as the shortage of roles for older women. It's tragic that one of the most talented, most successful, and most visible actors in the history of movies can't get scripts. The wasted years of potentially fantastic performances sadden me.
Thoughts?
