Whoopi Goldberg Retired from Acting

Post by AwallaceUNC »

This is actually a few months old but in my extreme busyness, I somehow missed this:
Comedienne Whoopi Goldberg has announced she is retiring from acting to concentrate on her broadcasting career. The Oscar-winning star, 52, who replaced Rosie O'Donnell on long-running daytime show The View last month, insists there's "no room" for her in Hollywood anymore - because there are younger, more glamorous actresses taking all the jobs. Goldberg, who has made more than 40 films in her career, winning an Oscar for her role in Ghost, claims she has no choice but to retire from movies - because she never gets sent scripts anymore. She tells talk show host Larry King, "You know, there's no room for the very talented Whoopi. There's no room right now in the marketplace of cinema."

This is really sad news. We've talked about Whoopi retiring from radio and making the leap to "The View" on here and many of us were worried that it would keep her away from any potential movie roles that might come along. I guess those roles simply aren't coming and won't be anytime soon. This is a testament to the shortage of black roles in Hollywood, as well as the shortage of roles for older women. It's tragic that one of the most talented, most successful, and most visible actors in the history of movies can't get scripts. The wasted years of potentially fantastic performances sadden me.

Thoughts?

I guess we won't see Sister Act 3 anytime soon.

Whoopi is one of the few actresses out there who I'll adore watching in any role, and Sister Act and Ghost stand out as my two favorite movies from her filmography. Heck, I even enjoy the less-than-stellar Soapdish and Rat Race because she's in them. (Of course, I probably would have enjoyed Soapdish regardless, what with it being a biting parody of the soap opera business...)

Still, it's always sad to hear that a talented actor is choosing to retire, especially when there are scores of not-as-talented actors getting more roles than they deserve.

Very sad news. Always loved "The Whoopster" in Sister Act as well as the infamous The Telephone, one of her lesser movies from the 1980s, which she tried to stop getting released. It's actually quite good, and I recommend it to fans.

this is a travesty! what is happening to Hollywood? why are the talented being pushed aside for the "glamorous"?
Whoopi Goldberg will always be one of my favourite actresses. even with her somewhat small role in the hilarious "soapdish" she stole every scene she was in. not to mention the amazing "Ghost" where she subtley combined comedy and drama in one of her best roles. but by far my favourite Whoopi Goldberg movie is "The Color Purple". she captivated the screen in, in my opinion Steven Spileberg's masterpiece!

I wash my hands of Hollywood now!

This is definitely a sad thing for the movie industry. But for an individual, not such a bad decision. Most Hollywood product right now is crap anyway. In fact, it still rattles my brain that anyone could tell anyone else that going into acting's a smart move anymore. I get an unbelievable sense of claustrophic-vertigo everytime I get to the end of an Inside the Actors Studio and see the audience who are 98% actors who haven't been discovered yet. I can't even imagine that many people fitting into Hollywood right now, let alone that that's just 1 university group.

Her career has always been marked by spotty success stories. Color Purple, Ghost, Sister Act... what else? Girl, Interrupted, but she had a minor role there. The important thing is that those few films still make her a Movie Star. So she'll always be that, but, she's also a fine, talented actress. One whose first passion seems to be comedy. And reaching out to everyday people. Or whoever the audiences were for those Comic Relief specials.

But, she's in a period in her life where she's making a lot of changes. She may want to change back later.

What a shame. I loved Ghost, Sister Act & my personal favorite Whoopi film Jumpin' Jack Flash. Hopefully a great script will be sent her sometime in the near future. 52 is way to young for her to totally quit the big screen.
