Bambi named one of top 25 horror films

I was on CNN.com earlier today and discovered that Bambi has been given the honor of being one of the top 25 horror films of all time. Here is a link to the article:

wow, i never really thought of it that way. Then again my generation was tainted somewhat by more horrific films. I wonder what would happen if you took Saw back in time....

bambi is not a horror film in any sense of the word. they killed the mother, big whoop. that doesnt make it a horror film. most of the movie is generally very lighthearted.

Is it a horror film in the sense that it has horrified many, many young children over the years because of Bambi's mothers death? It sad more than anything else I think.

I think Bambi being on this list is rather rediculous. Bambi is one of my favorite Disney films, and though the death of Bambi's mother is sad - it doesn't constitute this film being on a list of horror movies.

There is far more horror in Fantasia and Pinocchio than in Bambi. Bambi's mother dies offscreen. The 'horror' lies of course in the trauma of losing a parent.

The rest of the article says that the earlier Disney films are "terrifying" and "exploit childhood traumas". Yes, I agree that the Disney films of the 30s/40s had a darker tone to them, but I would hardly call them horror films. They were a little eerie at times, but nothing to get scared over, I've been watching these films since I was 3 years old and never got scared.

I think this is just one of those "let's throw in an unexpected film" things to get people interested in the list.

Bambi is a family classic, not a horror movie. In fact far scarier Disney movies were made in later years - just take a look at 1980's Disney! Return to Oz, anyone?

Well, Bambi is one of the most depressing films I've ever seen, I have bad feelings through the entire thing. I also believe "Man" is supposed to be a villain that stays through the whole thing. Are people not foregtting: villains you can't see are more terrifying. You don't where they are, when they're watching, when they'll attack...

Man was on some list of most horrifying Disney villains I think at some point in time at some place in time.

I read "Time Out : Movies that will change your life" and it said the transformation scene from Snow White gave more nightmares to children than any other film, and I agree, Snow White is way more horrifying than Bambi.

It's an era thing. Right now, something like Bambi wouldn't scare us. But back when movies were a whole lot more innocent and World War II was breaking out. The thought of someone you love being ripped away from you because of a force you don't understand or yet comprehend is terrifying.

I think it's also a whole lot more reflective in how it scared smaller children. Back then there weren't any blood and guts movies and the news was censored a whole lot better than today. Death was a much more sensitive subject back then.

Its not just about his mother dying.

The dogs chasing, cornering Faline. The dogs chasing Bambi and him fighting them off. The Ronno/Bambi fight. The pheasant who didn't listen to the other birds. The forest fire and the forest animals fleeing. Bambi being shot on screen.

Scary now? Not, not likely for most people. But a lot of characters are in peril, the movie is more violent then just his mother being shot. When Bambi's mother gets shot, she doesn't come back. When Bambi gets shot, you can obviously tell he is in pain as he struggles to get away from the fire. I don't think it qualifies in in the top 25, but I could see how this would be considered a horror movie. Not the first animated movie I would consider horror. Ringing Bell (Chirin no Suzu) and Plague Dogs could also be considered horror movies.

I agree. I've read that when "Snow White" came out in England, children under 16 had to be accompanied by an adult, since the movie is frightening.

My brother-in-law, when he was a child, was so disturbed by the "Snow White" ride at WDW that he wouldn't come back (but he finally did come back this year).

"Bambi" is by far not the scariest Disney movie- because of Chernabog, "Fantasia" is scary, and we already mentioned SW&t7D. And "Pinocchio" is scarier than "Bambi", in my opinion.

Wow how time has changed the perception of horror. Bambi is most definitely a horror film. The idea of a an unknown force destroying loved ones and then your home is a truly terrifying thing to imagine. The
movie has classic elements of horror films such as tense music just before something terrible happens, a villian who comits senseless attrocities, a hell of a lot of suspense. And to top it all off, Bambi, his mother and the other forest animals are good people, something most victims of "horror" movies these days are not.

It's not gore porn, but it is a work of horror. We've just become so immune to this type of horror that we don't precieve it as such.

Bambi, directed by David Hand, has a primal shock that still haunts oldsters who saw it 40, 50, 65 years ago.

I don't see Bambi as horror at all. Sure, it has some unexpected moments and characters in danger, but that's just making it a bit more real. Bambi is more about coming of age and the "Circle of Life" than the horror of the forest.

It seems to be a well-known fact that lots of kids were "traumatized" because of the death of Bambi's mother - I believe quite some of them seem to remember seeing her getting shot, although that wasn't really depicted on the screen. That undoubtedly made an impact. But horror movie? I find it hard to agree.
