cinderella laserdisc, help me! Also, lion king LD

Post by outoftimejedi »

Should i buy this? The cav SE. Those old disney box sets were pretty amazing. But look at this way, the snow white box set was carried over to the dvd, everything was there, as was the Sleeping beauty, but the lion king, from what i understand, the making of are different, does anyone know if the making of on the laserdisc was a old while we were making it or a look back, bc everyone tells me it blows the making of on the upcoming dvd away. ALso, look at HBOF notre dame, all the laserdiscs extras were not trans ported over to the dvd. Anyway, not to get to off topic, is the cinderella set worth getting? THe only real extra is the making of, which im sure that will be on the dvd when it comes out, i hope anyway. IS it worht getting, can anyone help me?

We have no idea what is going to be on the Cinderella DVD, but the laserdisc set was pretty good. From just a collector standpoint its worth getting, its a nice package and has some goodies. It has:

The Making of Cinderella
the original 1922 silent Laugh-O-Gram of Cinderella,
demos of 8 songs you never got to hear,
Story concepts from 1940,
Abandoned storyboard sequences, art design,
layouts and backgrounds, trailers, posters, lobby cards, 1950 Pressbook, merchandising, etc. Its a nice set. Also has a hardcover book and lithograph.

Here's a good comparison between the LD and DVD for The Lion King (plus the LD has the proper 'original' version)

Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

I own all the setts that you mentioned but I reacently got them so I have had little time to look at them.

The Cinderella Disc contains a lot of extras but I have no idea if all of them will come on the DVD. That question should be delth with those that know what will be on that DVD. But the box does also contain these extras that will not be included in any DVD release are the book that was enclosed. There is also a lot of feautures that I do not belive will return on the DVD because they will try and get a lot of games for children on it instead.

The only box that I have looked at is the Lion King and I was realy impressed. I was sitting for over 2 hours with all the extras and almost everything was as much fun as it could be.

First of all there was a documentary that must have gone on for about an hour. It was realy interesting and had covered all aspects of making a animated movie. You got to meet the voice actors, animators, the people behind the music and much more. This documentary must have been planed alongside the making of the movie because it had so much materiale from the making of it.

Home Theater Forum's not working for me. It hasn't been for the past few days. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Anyway, the Cinderella LD was jam packed. In detail, this is what it had:

* 1922 Laugh-O-Grams: "Cinderella"
* 1933 Silly Symphony Version
* 1940 Story Concept

* Storyboards and Story Development
--Sequence Breakdown- Seq. 1.2-Starting the Day
--Abandoned Sequences
---The Music Lesson
---Cinderlla Work Song
---Dancing on a Cloud

* Influence of World War II

* Return to the Classics

* Music
-- "Cinderella"
-- "I'm in the Middle of a Muddle"
-- "I Lost My Heart at the Ball"
-- "The Mouse Song"
-- "Sing A Little, Dream A Little"
-- "Dancing on a Cloud"
-- "The Dress My Mother Wore"
-- "The Face I See in the Night"

* Voice Talent

* Live-Action Reference Footage
-- Mickey Mouse Club Helene Stanley Clip

* Art Design, Layouts, and Backgrounds
--Character Design
---Cinderella
---Lady Tremaine
---Anastasia and Drizella
---Fairy Godmother
---Prince Charming
---King
---Duke
---Lucifer
---Mice
---Major
---Bruno
---Miscellaneous Animals
---Music Teacher (deleted character)
-- Preliminary Design Concepts
-- Layouts and Backgrounds

* Animation

* Production Photo Gallery

*Radio Excerpts
-- "Village Store"
-- "Gulf Oil Prrsents"
-- "Scouting the Stars"

* Publicity
-- Trailers
-- Radio Spots
-- Posters, Lobby Cards, and 1950 Pressbook
-- Merchandising
-- 1950 Sunday Color Comic Strip

Just add audio commentary to it and you've got a Cinderella DVD that could possibly put even Snow White to shame.

EVERYTHING? Are you sure about this? I believe that there were small variations. I will have to look at both my DVDs and LD Box Sets side-by-side for these two titles to see for myself.

I think so. It is very complete. I wouldn't pay more than $25 for it, though. The Japanese Cinderella Box Set has different extras/goodies than the American one and is for the completists (as I must be! :)).

It's hard to tell whether Cinderella will be treated similarly as Snow White and Sleeping beauty have (putatively) or more along the lines of The Lion King and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. However, considering the time-frame that Cinderella was produced (1950), it was filmed at a time between Snow White (1937) and Sleeping beauty (1959), and NOT near the times that The Lion King (1994) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) were produced. Therefore, if I were a betting man (which I'm not :)), I would bet that most (but not ALL!) of the extras from the Cinderella CAV Box Set will be ported to the Cinderella Platinum DVD like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty have.

Once again... a resounding YES. It is a permanent part of Disney memorabilia and I will not ever sell my set even if it is 100% ported to the DVD (it probably won't be 100%, like I think Snow White and Sleeping Beauty weren't 100% transfered). I'm not giving up either of these CAV LD Box Sets, either!

Snow White's DVD didn't have all of the still frame galleries. I think they got just about everything else though. Good job!
