Hey Everyone,
So similar to Tarzan, the TENG covers may not have the most interesting layouts or concepts, a lot of elements get recycled, but they are generally very well executed. There is only one exception to that.... I will point it out in my ranking.
D82, I agree with most (if not all) your observations about the covers.
Here we go!
1) Ultimate Groove 2 disc: Great concept, great execution. Looks like engraved gold, it links to the art direction of the film, I LOVE the headpiece on the llama... not loving the placement of the title. Really breaks up the llama figure. Oh well. Still great.
2) DMC tin: I really like this one. All characters on model, well rendered, fun layout. I would buy this cover. This maybe should be my #1.... cause this is a fun, colorful film, and the secondary characters are NOT secondary at all. They should be on the cover...
3) Heroes: I will repeat what others have said. This concept works for this film.... most of the original posters were just human Kuzco. The clip art here is recycled... but it works.
4) VHS: It's a nice cover.... I have some mild layout issues with it... cause that hill on top of Kronk's shoulder... well.... it looks like it's on Kronk's shoulder. The scales don't make much sense... but characters are generally well drawn and rendered. But d82, I think you are right, Kronk isn't 100% on model.
5) New Groove ed: layout is ok... not great. Something about the villains' poses says "saturday morning cartoon"... and it doesn't quite fit. They also forgot to shade Izma's bottle. The background looks like a random haze... why is Kuzco looking in that direction? Characters are mostly well drawn... except: WHAT IS UP WITH IZMA'S LEFT HAND??? Did she get in trouble with the mob and they broke all her fingers???
6) Villains: it's a great drawing of Izma. It's low on the list cause I wouldnt buy this cover. Again, I think a villains-themed line doesnt work for home video releases.
7) UK 2-movie: It's ok... it's a strange layout, and it looks like the right side of Kronk's body is missing. Kuzco looks great, but recycled from the original poster. Kronk looks pretty good. Overall: Meh.

Blu ray: this is where they dropped the ball. The upper half looks good... yes, mostly recycled, but characters are well drawn and rendered, mostly on-model (except Kronk, see comments about the VHS). But the bottom half is a serious mess. The shading is sloppy and doesn't match the top half, Kuzco is VERY off-model, the poses are weak... Izma's coloring is off... the relational scale is off... just a mess.
Pardon my ignorance... but the UK Ultimate Groove... what is the difference with the American release, other than the outline of the title card and the fact that it is placed a little lower???
I'm not going to do all the international covers, but that Brazilian one looks GOD AWFUL.
And yeah... Dinosaur.... probably shouldn't be part of the cannon. It is also one of the very few disney movies I have never seen. And I'm in no rush.
