I haven't seen the Aurora preview in a while- cringe at Aurora's speaking voice! And kind of cringe at her singing voice, too! Would we rather have had Mary Costa provide her voice and Aurora maybe sound a little older than she's supposed to, or Aurora sound her age, which isn't a good thing?

Why exactly did they scrap "A Kingdom of Kindness"? I'm reading some older posts in this thread, and Kelvin mentioned how it could've been to increase sales of Aladdin...And, the Cinderella & Mulan volume was supposed to come out early last year...did the first one not sell that well? And they made books featuring the stories of Cinderella and Mulan; Amazon says that the storybook (Ariel'sprince posted the Disney link on page 44) came out in 2007, but that it's OOP- Limited Quantities. I don't think it ever came out, though? There are no reviews or anything...

lol @ in the trailer, where it says "New Animation"- did they trace Phillip & Aurora's dance from the first movie at all? Because it's similar. (lol because it's "new" but very similar)

And I just spend who knows how long reading all 45 pages of this thread. Sure, some pages I just glanced through (gotta love the UD arguments!), but I have things to do. Ugh, I have no life! :p

I am kind of sick at Disney re-releasing titles that do not deserve it.

Wow, I was not expecting this. I’m glad this will be coming out in a Special Edition.

I haven’t been posting here lately because, in all honesty, I don’t feel like there is much to talk about. Between the never ending DVD Blu-Ray debate (and just so you know, I’ve gone Blu and I’ll never go back), the “Hannah Montana is crap” threads, and the “Pixar Rules” non sense I’ve just decided it was better to keep quiet.

This upcoming special Edition is a sign of Disney finally waking up and saying “sorry Lasseter”. For years the direct to video films have made tons of money for Disney. They were marketed to younger children, and gave kids the chance to have another adventure with their favorite characters. The direct to video films were a gold mine for Disney. Then come Mr. “I am Walt Disney/God” John Lasseter and his decree to cancel and no longer produce any direct to video films. All the fan boys went bonkers and cheered. Well unfortunately Disney said “stop”. Disney Consumer Products was not going to let him cancel all their planned direct to video films, based off of character franchises.

Do you honestly think Lasseter wanted the tinker bell films to continue? He had no choice but to re-work them, as opposed to cancel them. I think Disney met him half way. The Tinker bell films explore a new world, and introduce new characters. Disney Princess Enchanted Tales, takes classic characters and literally assaults them. There’s difference. I believe Lasseter was able to put Enchanted Tales on hold. There is no doubt in my mind that Disney has all of the Enchanted Tales series completed. As stated before these films were made cheap and fast, to return a greater profit. There’s also no doubt in my mind that Lasseter was not pleased with the series. There is a huge difference between creating an entire new brand and world out of one character, and artistically raping another group of characters who already have established worlds, personalities, and experiences.. What I’m trying to say is that such beautiful works of art (the Disney Princesses) deserve better than what we saw in Enchanted Tales.

Having said, it’s also important to remember that Disney is first and foremost a company!! They have a variety of different consumers to appeal to. The people that sit here and complain about things like Hannah Montana and High school musical make me laugh! Hannah Montana is something worth releasing!! It’s a billion dollar franchise adored by millions of families. Just because YOU don’t like it, doesn’t mean it’s un-worthy and it doesn’t mean it’s not Disney. But things like the Mickey Mouse club and Annette are perfectly fine, right? You guys don’t make ANY sense.

Here is something I posted in the Ariel’s Beginning thread. I think it has relevance to the point I’m trying to make:
Who really cares that Ariel’s Beginning doesn’t do the original justice. In all honesty it wasn’t created to. What about the true Disney fans you ask? Well believe it or not Disney actually does do things for us. They actually just went through the pain staking process of restoring some of our classic films to HD, digging in the vault for rare and exclusive footage, recording new interviews, and using a technology to its fullest so that the true fans get what they deserve. Disney is a huge corporation and they have a lot of different audiences to cater to. Like it or not Ariel’s Beginning (or Cinderella III for that matter) was not meant to cater to the true Disney fans. We can like the film, and we can also dislike the film- in the end its our decision. The upcoming Blu-Ray releases of Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Beauty and the Beast do cater to us Disney fans. Do we have every right to be upset over Ariel’s Beginning? Yes we do, but please understand where the company is most likely coming from. I hope this made sense. Obviously I am NOT connected to The Walt Disney Company so I cannot speak for them, but I’m trying to put things into perspective.
The same logic applies to Disney Princes Enchanted tales- it’s a series meant to entertain preschool age girls, so that they can sing and play and immerse themselves with their favorite characters one more time. I don’t agree with Disney on some levels though. The Disney Princesses are not just for little girls. I’m 19, straight, and have a gf, and I’m OBSESSED with the Disney Princesses. Anyone can like them, and that’s where Disney and I disagree.

If Disney is trying to sell expensive Princess merchandise, then of course the princesses are for everyone. But if a fan complains about Aurora’s voice in Enchanted Tales, then Disney goes “well it’s for preschoolers”. I like enchanted Tales because I get to see and experience my favorite characters again and again in a setting and story different from that of the original films. Having said that, however, the amount of disrespect to the character of Aurora in both her new found personality and voice in the series DISGUISTS me to no end. I don’t have a problem with the animation or the not-so-great story lines. Enchanted Tales was produced cheap, and meant for young children.. I understand that and accept that. I will not accept the disrespect to the characters. Even Mary Costa, the original voice of Aurora, was appalled at her characters “update” in Enchanted Tales.

----End of Rant----

Having said all this (and I’m sorry it’s so long. Kudos if you read it!), I think Disney is re-releasing this because they are desperate to fill the void of money they’ve been loosing by not having the direct to video films. Why do you think Disney’s been releasing this like “Timeless Tales” and the “Animation Collection”? Because, they need to make up the money they’re no longer getting from the direct to video films.

This upcoming special edition release is most definitely a test. I think Disney wants to see how well it sells. If it makes a lot of money, there is no doubt in my mind that we will see upcoming volumes of Enchanted Tales. Walt Disney Home Entertainment is desperate, and it’s sad. Believe me, we have NOT seen the end of direct to video films and sequels. It was a stupid move on Lasseter’s part, and now the Home Entertainment Department is feeling the blow.

Disney is a company, and as such seeks to make money. Money talks, and it’s starting to say, I need my direct to video films”. Hopefully when Disney does decide to produce more direct to video sequels and films they will create them with respect and talent. I for one hope Lasseter has a huge part in the creation and development of upcoming direct to video films. I want to see a lot more Cinderella III’s, and a lot less Cinderella II’s.

I agree with you on the more CIII's, less CII's.

Although I like to say that I think that the animation of 'Enchanted Tales' is very good (for me). If I compare it to 'Aladdin the series', 'The Little Mermaid series', any cheap disney sequel (return of jafar, cinderella 2, tarzan and jane...) I think it improved a lot. I think you can compare it to the better animated sequels like Cinderella III and Little Mermaid III.

I don't like the way they portraited Aurora, but then again, it is meant for little kids (especially girls) and it wants to teach them something. They could have done this story easily with any other princess, but the lesson was that you shouldn't go the easy, dangerous way to something, but the sometimes harder, fair way. Aurora learned her lesson, but I think it sucks they used her for this story. I think it would have been better for someone like Jasmine, because she has always been a spoiled princess (she improved in Aladdin and all its sequels, but if you compare her to Aurora, Jasmine is obviously the more spoiled one because she has always been a princess, and Aurora was a pesant maid in her first sixteen years of her life.) If you would have put Cinderella in this story, it wouldn't have worked because she is used to work, just as I think Aurora was in the simple house in the forest, so I think it doesnt justice the character.

I also agree with you on the fact that sequels are created for people who would like to see their favourite characters in other situations ( I love sequels), but if you only like the original movies, I think Disney is trying really hard to please those people. I mean, how many re-releases with new footage etcetera of Snow White don't we have? (with a new one coming, again!)

I would like to conclude with saying that I would love to see more Enchanted Tales, like from Ariels life with Eric before Melody (I don't like her  ) because those are things we don't know a lot from, blanks that I would like to see filled.

Sorry for the broken English 8)

Well, the DTVs reportedly made billions for Disney. If Lasseter's intention of canceling them was to ensure more people went to the theaters for disney, there's no gurantee that will happen.

If my family goes to the movies - there's four of us.

4 x 7.50 = $30 to see one movie once in a theater.

Or, buy the movie on DVD for $19.99 and any number of people can watch it any number of times.

Parents (for the most part, except for a niche group of parents who grew up on Disney) don't care to sit through these films. They keep checking their watch when they take their kids to the movies. So these parents aren't going to care about the quality of the DTV Disney films.

So, why would they spend $30 (or more) rather than $19.99 just because the 'quality is better'? They wouldn't.

There's quite simply no guarantee that stopping DTVs makes families crave Disney animation more and subsequently incites them to go to the theater.

I know "BOLT" had no chance against Twilight, but, even families didn't seem capable of saving it from lower-than-expected numbers.

However, and this is pure conjecture, if "Oliver and Company 2" had been a DTV release last fall, I bet that would have made a lot of money and easily could have balanced out the loss of "BOLT".

And, I can understand 'protecting Walt's classics" - but is there really so much to protect with films like Oliver, "Chicken Little", "Meet the Robinsons"? For all their heart, there was also plenty of silliness that in itself is anti-Walt. So a sequel wouldn't harm anything.

It was clear that DisneyToons was just hitting its stride with 2D. Cinderella III and Ariel's Beginning are standouts of their many films. They were stopped just when the quality momentum got going.

I can admire what Lasseter was trying to do - he was trying to protect the legacy of a man who is dead and cannot protect himself.

At the same time, there are many children who adore these films and do not know the difference between a 'classic' and a 'sequel'. Should they have to? If children are being entertained and can find heart and magic in either film, do they need to know the difference?

Even adult fans, like myself, enjoyed simply seeing our favorite characters in new situations. Re-watching the original movies only suffices for so long.

I hate several of the DTVs, don't get me wrong. I detest "Bambi II". But, there's many I love, such as the Pooh sequels.

The fact of the matter is, there were as many bad DTVs as good. And while canceling them is preserving a legacy, it also hurts all the fans and children who enjoyed seeing their favorite characters in new situations. It's also losing Disney billions. And while re-releasing helps a little, it doesn't help as much if they just made new ones.

Finally, at least Disney made it's 'cheapquels' straight-to-video (excluding a select few).

DreamWorks and other companies sell their cheapquels at full theater ticket prices:

Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, Shrek Forever After, Puss in Boots
Kung Fu Panda 2: The Kaboom of Doom
Madagascar 2, Madagascar 3

...those films aren't any better than Disney's cheapquels, yet they are at full theater prices.

The TinkerBell franchise is off to a good start. If all future DTVs can match that quality, Disney should bring them back. It'd make many fans happy and generate billions in revenue.

As someone else had said (sorry- too lazy to look!), the original DVD was released just 2 years ago. It would still be on the shelves if this new edition weren't coming (is it still on the shelves?). I guess the target market is parents whose kids were babies when the original came out, who are now toddlers and preschoolers who can enjoy the film, or people who have given birth since the original came out. Some people who own the original DVD will double dip (mostly due to the Mulan & Cinderella songs), but most won't, since it's not like any new footage has been added to the film (a la Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Magical World.

I'm saying this because this release might not (probably won't) sell as well as an all-new Enchanted Tales DVD would. So, this might not be the best indicator of how newer DTV films would do. But maybe that's what Lasseter wants- maybe he knows that this won't sell as well as a brand-new title would, so then when the sales are lackluster, he can say, "I told you so!"

All this is, is a cynical cash-in on The Princess and the Frog's release, to heighten the anticipation and recognition of the film and the new characters - especially the Princess.

[sigh]

I wouldn't read too much into its re-release.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

Wait... they're re-releasing this? Ok, extremely odd. I'm guessing it's just to promote PP&TF. Why not just release vol.2...? ugh

You know I've been trying very hard to obtain a copy of this film without actually paying for it... so this is kinda interesting.

I'm looking forward to the new cover.

Unless it changes, it will just be the old color with a Special Edition banner above in the style of the "An Adventure Fit for a Princess" one below. I'll post it and the bonus disc artwork in a few moments.

I'm not sure how you can call these "cheapquels," or what even supposedly defines the term anymore, unless you've got a chip on your shoulder against Dreamworks. Especially when over half of these films you've listed haven't even been released yet. I also felt that Shrek 2 was just as good, if not better than the original.

Many live-action films "cash in" by making sequels, but do animated films fall under a different set of rules just because they're animated? These Dreamworks films listed above are being made by the same studio as the originals and most likely with a similar budget as the originals, plus if anything, the quality of animation has improved over time.

What initially coined the term "cheapquels" was that Disney farmed out the animation outside of their feature animation division on a decidedly smaller budget with a different feel and tone than the originals, making them feel closer to television production than theatrical. They even exploited some of their own characters by pulling them out of character for the sake of making a buck (sounds like they did this with Aurora from what I've read here). Look at their direct to video sequels and then at the handful they've produced in-house and there's really no comparison.

At least the Dreamworks sequels thus far have managed to retain the look and feel of the originals while keeping their characters in character, making them feel much more canon than, say, Ariel's Beginning or Return of Jafar.

But to get back on topic, I'm afraid these Princess-type videos don't capture my attention. Perhaps if I had a little girl that was within the target audience I'd have more incentive to check this out and hope for a volume 2.

Time to play devil's advocate here...

While this re-release is silly and wasteful I think the intentions are good. Yes, they may be marketing Tiana as the newest Disney Princess and push merchandise, but since the release of The Princess and the Frog is very important not just for Disney but for animation in general maybe we should put up with this marketing push if it means that more people will be aware of the movie and go see the movie?

Think about it for a second...

The Princess and the Frog will be an event film. Animation fans will be paying attention to its success. I am sure Disney wants the movie to make double of what Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons and Bolt did in their opening weekends. So this means pushing merchandise and the characters in the princess line.

So I ask you once again... Would you rather see Disney ignore the film and face a big flop or see Disney hyping it through movie releases, merchandise and other marketing and see The Princess and the Frog the most successful animated film in a while?

animation already used for DVD games

Post by kurtadisneyite »

I believe some of the on-hold Belle, and some of the released Aurora enchanted tales animation, was used for a DVD Game released 1 -2 years ago (I had done some work on the title and a few of the effects in the game).

Disney will release their product however they wish - they are in the business to make money from their properties and sometimes the decisions are strange, but ones we have to live with.

IMHO, Making these sequels, provided they are done to a decent level of competence (C-II barely scraped by) won't hurt the originals that much. Why? The originals, for all their animated excellence, are getting more dated with each release, particularly wrt audio quality. Some classic soundtracks sound so bad, by today's standards, that Disney itself has pondered re-recording some of the earlier classics with an all new cast!

Besides, unless Disney can change the copyright laws to perpetual ownership of a character (I.E., they own Cinderella, Aurora, Tiana, Gosharootie, etc. FOREVER), they will loose copyright protection after a certain number of years. You can already find some Disney material (Alice comedies, old BW, a few color cartoons) on public domain DVD products.
2D isn't Ded yet!
