I think Disney sees it as a stronger DVD seller than anything else (BD/Theatre seller) because parents don't think children would care and it's cheaper from their pov. So the sooner its out on DVD, the quicker they can make some money. It's just children fodder to parents.Dream Huntress wrote:So, over here on Mexico the movie was released around March or April, I can't remember which month, but it was just 2 or 3 months ago, well, the thing is, the movie is already out on DVD, granted it only has the spanish audio and no extras whatsoever, but still, isn't this way too soon?
Not to me though

I keep expecting to hear about a BIG Disney movie release this year but then I have to remind myself that Pooh is it. Like I am excited for this movie but nowhere near as excited as I was for Princess and the Frog or Tangled. And if Disney are mainly hoping for DVD sales Im really disappointed cause the film could really make a killing if they just promoted it more. Also its release scheduale is just stupid. France had it in April but the rest of us are still waiting. Like wtf?

I just realized this film is due in just 11 days and I have not seen one piece of merchandise, one ad... nothing! This year could very well be named "the year Disney decided to only make sequels because they knew it would push merchandise" (Pirates 4, Cars 2, Pooh) ... and for Pooh being what? The number 1 or number 2 toy and merchandise mover for Disney Consumer Products, why did they make this movie and are now not selling it?
I remember seeing previews for Cars 2 over a month ago! I saw the Cars 2 ad on multiple channels totaling to at least a dozen times. They sold the heck out of that movie. There were Disney Channel previews, DVD previews, I had pop-up ads online - IMDb was re-branded for a short time. Even our newspaper circulars - one for Target I believe had the first two or three pages entirely devoted to Cars toys and my mom even said, "wow, they're really pushing this Cars sequel."
But I have not seen anything for Pooh. No TV ad, or preview, no merchandise that's new - what gives?
Did they get cold feet because it's hand drawn? Because of lukewarm reviews overseas? Because Cars 2 was panned and now they don't want to advertise another sequel just weeks later?
Why would they make two movies solely to push merchandise (and you know that's why they made Cars 2 and this Pooh - to sell toys - not necessarily to make a good movie) - but only throw a huge marketing push behind the former?
I'm baffled now. If Pooh is such a big merchandise pusher, where's all the new toys, clothes, games? Not that I necessarily support (or don't support) all that branding - but why isn't Disney doing what they intended with this sequel and sell toys?
Or am I somehow missing the ads/new merchandise?

The only advertisement I've seen in Australia are HUGE posters (the biggest I've seen x 4) in cinemas/city arcades and trailers.
It may be the case that because Disney knows WTP sells almost automatically every year (like Mickey Mouse), and so they are saving money on advertising. They could very easily blow all the money it's made in Europe on the tiniest promotion in each State of the US.

Well, there are currently TWO bus-stops near my house with big Winnie the Pooh posters up. I haven't seen any tv spots, but other people seem to have been able to see them.

And here I thought the Muppets would be doing the Spoof on Harry Potter...Not Pooh Potter

That Jim Cummings interview was really good.
