Either way, I think Rapunzel is going to be a real winner.
I'm really excited and curious too.

I just hope they can make it look like a real classic again.

Because to be honest, the PATF actually looks exactly like Cinderella 3 and TLM 3. In terms of style and animation.
It's some kind of digital look.
And the character design is quite similar to Hercules and Home on the Range. And unfortunately it misses this "classic" look, that TLM, Aladdin and BatB did have.
So if they are unable to make 2d films look like classics anymore, then this might be a wonderful alternative.

I would have to wait and see before I jump for joy. I have to see how the pull off the "3D characters that look 2D" thing since even when the 3D design is highly stylized there is still an element of 3D.

A good example would be the 2D illustration of Gusteau coming to life in Ratatouille. Pixar did a good job of making a 3D model look 2D, but it was still in 3D.

So I would have to see actual footage to see if the footage is convincing enough.

And I was under the impression that Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin were digitally inked and animated. What makes those films different from Princess and the Frog?

Thanks for posting that, nomad- JHM is the first website I visit each morning, and that hadn't been posted yet when I visited this morning.
Earlier this summer, select attendees at the Licensing International Expo were shown the opening of “Rapunzel”
Seriously, people, where is that drooling emoticon I'll give you 100 dancing pink elephants for?!?!? Was the opening of Rapunzel in storyboard format, or do you think it was in rough animation, or maybe even some finished, colored, animation?!?!?!? Either way, wow, I am so beyond jealous. Wow.

Lol, if only you could see me reading this article. I am so excited and jealous! Look at that picture of Beast that Glen Keane drew for a fan!!! That would be my most-prized posession!!!

I thought I remembered hearing way back before Keane left as director that the begining was finished. Lassater was quoted in saying that it was one of the best openings he'd ever seen from the studio.

I've been under the impression that a lot for the film was finished but Keane had hit some kind of director's block along with his illness and that's why he was replaced. I thought there was only a portion of the film left to finish before it was released and when the new directors came in they were to wrap it all up.

From what I heard, the movie is great when it starts and when it ends. Its in the middle where everything just falls apart and that's why the new directors were brought it; they wanted the film to be solid throughout, not just the beginning and the end.

See I don't get that at all. Animation has improved drastically since the classics, I mean it's clearly obvious even from Mermaid to Aladdin how much it had improved. I get the Aladdin vibe from this animation, but yes there are a few places where I do get the direct to video sequel vibe like when Naveen is on the steam boat and the crowd is taking photos.

Anyways I get the feeling we will be seeing what looks a highly stylized version of classic animation with some texture and more detail. not necessarily more dimension but yet maybe a bit, nothing like traditional CG movies however.

I too am really looking forward to this movie. If it resembles the concept art in any way, shape or form, then it will be a beautiful film. I think it will be interesting to see how it turns out as they are going for a more 2D looking approach to 3D characters. I for one would like to see 3D characters who appear more painterly than plastic, at least for a film like Rapunzel.

I'm out of the loop here. Glenn Keane is or was ill? I hope he is doing better. He seems like a very nice and genuine person, and of course enormously talented. I assume he must doing somewhat better because my father saw him at the comic-con.

And from what I heard, when the new directors were brought in, all the previous work was scrapped and the project started from scratch!

This is damn confusing.

Maybe the opening scene and the hair tests mentioned in the article is what the D23 Expo will show about a month from now:

"Highlights of upcoming animated films from Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios will include exclusive looks at The Princess and the Frog, the new 3D versions of the first two Toy Story films along with a sneak peek at Toy Story 3 and an early look at Disney's 2010 animated fairy tale, Rapunzel."

The animation in Aladdin and The Little Mermaid is notoriously "loosey-goosey". I don't blame the animators, they were working within the budget and timelines given to them. But let's not kid ourselves, animation just doesn't get more refined than Pinocchio and Bambi. The best anyone can do is equal them or be compared favorably to them

animators today will never be as talented as the nine old men. especially with most animators starting off with 3D animation.

yukitora, if one thinks that way then he/she will never amount to anything remarkable. If you're an up and coming animator you should brightly think that one day you'll be as good and maybe even better then the nine old men. A lofty ambition ... yes, but infinitely more productive than looking at your work and thinking that even a Marc Davis wart would do a better job, because it is a Marc Davis wart.

Back in the 16th century it was said nobody could surpass the achievements of Leonardo and Michelangelo. If anyone truly believed that then Raffaello would have bowed his head in shame and never touched a drop of paint (OMG who was he to challenge those two masters!!!?) and no artist since then would have ever taken up painting since s/he would be under the impression that they're not even fit to be a cool tattoo of a naked woman on Leonardo's nipple.

Get my point?

I'm not saying/didn't say animators shouldn't strive to be better, it'd be horribly tragic if they didn't (and i'm sure they do) and i'm definitely not saying that you should give up simply because you won't be the best. Don't know where you got that from.

Rapunzel gets her voice (someone on this board will LOVE this news ;)):
http://www.empireonline.com/news/feed.asp?NID=25788

And a slightly longer synopsis (attention: spoilers!):
Walt Disney Pictures presents RAPUNZEL, an action-packed, swashbuckling, animated musical comedy about the girl behind 70 feet of magical, golden hair. A princess stolen from her parents’ castle as a baby, Rapunzel is locked in a hidden tower longing for adventure. Now an imaginative and determined teenager, she takes off on a hilarious, hair-raising escapade with the help of a dashing bandit. With the secret of her royal heritage hanging in the balance and her captor in pursuit, Rapunzel and her cohort find adventure, heart, humor, and hair… lots of hair. With music by Alan Menken, this comedic re-imagining of the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale comes to theaters during the 2010 holiday season.
