Enchanted house from Enchanto, enchanted castle from Beauty and the Beast, ... Yeah, I could see it.

Also you put into words something that I noticed with Mirabel, she doesn't really look 15. She looks more matronly -- it's not just the glasses either, it's more of her whole appearance. Her personality is youthful though.

Although to be fair I think Disney is just generally weak at making teens look like teens. I never really felt that Aurora was 16 or that Jim Hawkins was 15, for instance. (Looks wise, anyway.)

They are not pronounced the same though. Giulia is "Julia" and Julieta is "Hulieta". Confusing, but they are in different languages and each language has its own rules.

I agree, I think it's because of the short hair, the glasses and the earrings. Each on its own won't make her look older, but everything combined makes her look like a kindergarten teacher, especially when she's next to the kids.

It's true; I hadn't realized that. Julieta is a variant of Julia, which also exists in Spanish. Farerb is right the pronunciation is different, but I guess both names have a common origin.

Yeah, it's true Disney teens usually look older than their age. I don't mind it too much, though. After all, in real life there are also teenagers who look almost like adults. Especially girls, as they grow faster than boys at that age. I just mentioned that about Mirabel because, except maybe Moana, all the princesses in the Disney franchise look like adults, so in my opinion that could be an indication they might plan to include her in the line.

• The soundtrack is already available in Europe. Here's a Spotify link, though it probably doesn't work in all territories.

This website also has Youtube links to the songs, but again most likely they only work in certain countries.

• There's also a new clip featuring Mirabel and her mother in this article.

Listening to the soundtrack now. Nothing that really instantly grabs me so far... only on track 3 yet though.

What in the Shakira meets N Sync* circa 2001 is this?! The most "modern" sounding Disney soundtrack song to actually be part of the movie ever?! Yet also the most dated sounding one?!

Apparently I'm not a Lin-Manuel Miranda kinda guy. VERY high on lyrical content a little low on instant satisfying melody as far as I'm concerned... (makes me kinda nervous as to what he'll bring to TLM). and those damn same Miranda style spit rap vocal stylings....

Repeat listen value for me is zero and the production sounds extremely dated on the tracks, already!

Very curious what my reaction to the songs will be seeing as most here are disappointed with them.

While I am tempted to listen on Spotify, I prefer to wait and experience them for the first time during the movie.

Unfortunately I have no idea when I will be seeing the film. Local cinema distributors have not yet made any mention of a local release, which is odd.

However, I am still apprehensive about the cinema given the current Covid surge. And ... I am not sure I will be happy paying €10 to watch a movie with the mask plastered on my face and fogging up my specs.

I've been unable to discuss the previous two WDAS films as I still haven't watched them. Guess Encanto will be the third. ☹

How comes you haven't watched Frozen II nor Raya and the Last Dragon Jules? :o I actually sympatize with your intention to watch each new WDAS movie at least once on a big screen first when available or reasonable, but still, other ways haven't been accessible for you since then?

Here are more links to listen to the soundtrack: https://disneymusic.co/Encanto

To be honest, like other members, I was a bit disappointed with the songs after my first listen. I liked the ones I knew I'd enjoy based on the snippets like "We Don't Talk About Bruno" or "The Family Madrigal", but the others didn't stand out much to me. I was especially underwhelmed by Luisa's song, as I hoped it would be one of the best judging by the critics' reactions. However, now that I've listened to them several times, some have really grown on me like "Waiting on a Miracle", for example. I can't believe I went from not being impressed at all by the Japanese snippet to loving the full song. And though, I liked "Dos Oruguitas" from the beginning, now I love it as well. I think it'll definitely be nominated at the Oscars. And depending on how competitive the category is, it might even win, since similarly to "Remember Me" from Coco, it seems it'll play at an emotional moment in the film and will be very important to the story, which will probably help.

Regarding "We Don't Talk About Bruno", I wanted to add that the different types of music used for each character who sings in it work really well together, in my opinion. I liked that song even more than I expected. Now that I think of it, I guess combining different music styles in one song must be one of Miranda's trademarks as well. I think he also did that in the opening numbers of "In the Heights" and "Vivo", for example.

I'm still not a big fan of Luisa's and Isabela's musical numbers, but in every soundtrack there are always some songs better than others, so in my opinion this is still a really good album. I think Encanto's songs sound less Disney and more Miranda than Moana's, though, so I understand if the people who are not big fans of him don't like them much.

Here's how I would rank the songs right now (I haven't included the last one as I've only listened to the beginning of it in order to avoid spoilers):

1. We Don't Talk About Bruno
2. Dos Oruguitas
3. Waiting On A Miracle
4. The Family Madrigal
5. Colombia, Mi Encanto
6. What Else Can I Do!
7. Surface Pressure

As for the score, I liked Raya's much more, but this one wasn't bad either. I've only listened to it once, but I didn't recognize any special theme that was repeated more than once like it happened in Raya and I don't think it uses music from the songs either. However, it has a distinctive sound, which seems accurate to the setting, and I liked that. The track titled "La Cumbia De Mirabel" was my favorite. Also, I didn't expect it would include vocals at some points, like in the track called "Antonio's Voice".

By the way, finally the reprise mentioned in the press release wasn't included, right? Or did I miss it?

I am loving this soundtrack! "Waiting on a Miracle" made me tear up. I love Mirabel! "Surface Pressure" is a fun listen. "We Don't Talk About Bruno"- I agree that the different styles work well. So Mariano is betrothed to another, per the song? Or is she referring to the fact that he WILL be?. "What Else Can I Do" is good, maybe not quite as catchy as the others, but good. I really like "All of You.". "Two Oruguitas" is very pretty. It made me tear up, too. I was under the impression that the whole song would be in Spanish, but I guess it was just written all in Spanish?

^ It seems that Isabela and Mariano are betrothed, but I think that perhaps Isabela doesn't love him or want to get marry, but she's doing it because this is what expected of her. Dolores is clearly in love with Mariano.

It is in Spanish, though there's also an English version that plays over the end credits. Maybe that's the one you've listened to. I have to admit it made me tear up a bit too, especially knowing the events of the movie the lyrics are most likely about.

Speaking of the song, here's an interview with the singer who performs it:

After listening to the complete soundtrack the other day, I`m with those who think it was just meh. Not that I had huge expectations at all, but the songs were just passable and inferior to those who from Moana. There were a couple of songs who were better than others, but they were still overall just bland and forgettable. The same could be said about the score. What strikes me with the chanting at certain parts of the score, is that it`s reminiscent of the same chants of Moana and Raya and the Last Dragon. Otherwise, it was a meh soundtrack.

I took my kids to see the movie last night (sneak peak). Overall everyone enjoyed it. I don't think it's their best movie but I do think the themes are relatable and Mirabel is a very likeable character. Artistically, I think it's a very visually appealing movie. A couple of things:

1. We had listened to the soundtrack before viewing the film. One daughter didn't like Mirabel's voice on the soundtrack but after seeing the film agreed, "It totally works."
2. There were some songs on the soundtrack we didn't like much from listening to them, but we enjoyed them much more in the context of the story and with the accompanying visuals, like "Waiting on a Miracle." I'm still not sold on "Surface Pressure" but I think it will grow on me with repeat viewings (much like "Shiny" which I hated the first time or two I listened to it, and now it amuses me when I watch the movie, even if musically I still don't think the song is great).

Of course much of this is subjective and YMMV

I just finished listening to the soundtrack. Even though I had low expectations, I was still disappointed. I think it's one of Disney's weakest soundtracks for a musical. And it has nothing to do with Latin music, by the way, as Coco or even Elena of Avalor had a much better assortment of songs than this. Here's an overview of each song.

The Family Madrigal
It's overlong and exposition-heavy. The repetition of the same five notes throughout the song as well as of the phrase "family madrigal" makes it tiresome and annoying. The rapping at the end consists of Mirabel reciting the gifts each family member has again but in a much faster and frantic way which makes it come out almost incomprehensible. Also, the song ends very abruptly.

Waiting on a Miracle
It begins with a sad reprise of The Family Madrigal, which is a good start, but it goes downhill from there. We get more repetition of the family's gifts in an uptempo with a Flamenco-styled arrangement. The melancholy and the yearning Mirabel expresses doesn't work well with the high-energy sound. The bridge is not melodic enough and the thrice repetition of "open your eyes" is overkill. Don't get it wrong though; the song is not horrible. Just bland and uninspired like a song from a direct-to-video sequel. Overall, this moment feels a bit slight and unsatisfying. It needed something more powerful to work including a more skilled performer. Stephanie Beatriz struggles to catch her breath in some places and I find the color of her voice ill-suited for this type of song. A more talented performer could have elevated it.

Surface Pressure
This song is ridiculous. In a bad way. It's like a cheap R&B song that people laugh at. Not to mention, its structure all over the place. It's like two songs with two distinct tunes clumsily stitched together. You can't tell what's the chorus, what's the bridge, what's the verse. It's a huge mess. It's hard to believe such a song exists in a Disney classic. :( It's even worse than "Shiny" from Moana.

We Don't Talk About Bruno
Surprisingly decent. The song is quite catchy and cohesive despite being sung by multiple characters. I liked the salsa sound of the arrangement as well as the bridge. It reminded me a bit of Carlos Santana's "Smooth". I didn't like, however, the part where all of them are singing different lyrics at the same time. That was headache-inducing.

What Else Can I Do?
A dull, generic pop song. It's a shame Isabela didn't get something stronger. Such a wasted opportunity. Her small part in "We Don't Talk About Bruno" was actually better than this entire song.

Dos Oruguitas
This was just OK. Pleasant, but nothing special. Definitely not as good as "Remember Me" which is clearly trying to mimic. It reminded me of Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" in places. I found it weird than in the English version, they left the word "oruguitas" and "mariposas" untranslated. What's the point of doing that when you already have a version entirely in Spanish?

All of You
Like it was theorized, this includes a medley of previous songs. The beginning with Mirabel and her grandma was very reminiscent of "I Am Moana". Stephanie Beatriz went off key on "learn". Bruno's rap was not as insufferable as I thought it would be. It's a very typical ending song in many respects and kind of derivative, especially with the way the townspeople are used as chorus. Still, it's one of the better songs of the soundtrack.

Colombia, Mi Encanto
A run-of-the-mill celebration song. Carlos Vives' performance is top-notch though.

In general, the result is quite mixed. I can handle a soundtrack having some songs that don't appeal to me, if there are least a couple that are really strong and stand out. That's the problem here. The lows are very low and the highs are just average.

Wilmer Valderrama's voice doesn't suit the dad's character design. It creates the impression the sound isn't coming out of the character; that it's a voice-over. The bit with Dolores at the end was cute though.
D82 wrote:More TV spots and promos.
Camilo seems to have the most funny scenes in the movie. Like the one where's he playing with the ball as an old lady or the one where he's making fun of Mariano.
D82 wrote:I like the idea for the visuals; how Mirabel is literally "transported" to her uncle and aunt's wedding. Though, I've noticed their wedding outfits are exactly the same as their usual ones, but white. I guess it's to save money and I understand it since they're probably dressed like that for just a couple of shots, but that's something that didn't happen in traditional animation.
I like the concept too. It lets you witness the events in question instead of just hearing about it. You're right about the outfits. This happens often with computer-animated films. A lot of assets get reused to save time and money, not only within the same film but from one to another too. I'm not fond of the practice as it makes them look cheap, in my opinion.
D82 wrote:The fact that she looks more like an adult than a teenager, as I first thought she would given her age, and that her family is pretty much like royalty in the town where she lives are two things that make me suspect she could indeed be included.
I think they'll probably induct both Raya and Mirabel into the line-up at the same time.
Farerb wrote:Inside Your Heart was much better than Dos Oruguitas.
I find both to be pretty middle-of-the-road and unexceptional, but I suppose "Inside Your Heart" does have a slight edge over "Dos Oruguitas".
Farerb wrote:Also since I guess there are people who like spoilers, this is a major one from the final song: Mariano and Isabela do break up and he ends up with Dolores.
I saw this coming and I still hated it. Also, this development means that Bruno's prophecy about Dolores doesn't come true which is odd given how all of his other ones do.
Farerb wrote:I agree, I think it's because of the short hair, the glasses and the earrings. Each on its own won't make her look older, but everything combined makes her look like a kindergarten teacher, especially when she's next to the kids.
I'd say her outfit as well. Its cut and the fact it has embroidery on it, adds to that.
D82 wrote:And more promos.
LMM's Disney trivia game is weak. It's understandable not recalling the name of the kingdom in Frozen, but not knowing the line "family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten" from Lilo & Stitch is unacceptable. That line is famous and gets repeated so many times throughout the film. I'm questioning if he's actually watched any post-'90s Disney movies now. It's also ironic he gets wrong the lyrics to Daughters of Triton given he's working on the live-action remake. No sister of Ariel's is named Athena, Lin! That's her mom's name.
D82 wrote:There's also a new clip featuring Mirabel and her mother in this article.
Mirabel's facial expressions when she's talking about Isabela are a little too exaggerated. It comes off as unnaturally cartoony.

When you say "high on lyrical content", do you mean lyric-heavy or high-quality lyrics? If it's the latter, I disagree. His lyrics are very basic and simplistic. They lack intricacy and cleverness and there's a lot of repetition going on. I agree that he has trouble conjuring up satisfying melodies. I'm not a fan of his signature rapping style either.
Clindor wrote:As expected a new featurette to go along with the release of the soundtrack today.
It seems the part with the unconventional animation is during Isabela's song.

I also believe a nomination is a lock. Oscar members tend to cling on to the type of songs they like and keep voting for them. "Dos Oruguitas" has the same ingredients as "Remember Me". Both are Latin-flavored songs from critically-acclaimed animated movies that have a lyrical, lullaby-like quality to them, are performed by Latino singers, and are played during emotional sequences in their respective films. "Dos Oruguitas" will be a front-runner for sure, but I'm not certain it will win. "No Time to Die" seems to be its biggest rival right now.

"We Don't Talk About Bruno" doesn't feature different types of music though. It's the same musical style throughout. There must have been some miscommunication in the press about it.

I assumed they either meant the reprise of "The Family Madrigal" at the beginning of "Waiting on a Miracle" or the reprises of "The Family Madrigal" and "We Don't Talk About Bruno" in "All of You". However, after checking 'The Art of' book that seems not to be the case. It's actually a reprise of "Waiting on a Miracle" that either is in the film, but not on the soundtrack (which raises the question of why it was omitted) or it was cut from the film. Here's what the description underneath the storyboards for the reprise says. Don't worry; it's spoiler-free. "For the reprise, I wanted Mirabel to have a very magical moment, and having the house move the tiles around her was one way to do that. I started researching how the house could communicate this way, taking inspiration from videos of dominos falling and how they flipped to the other side." -Jason Hand, Head of Story.
D82 wrote:Speaking of the song, here's an interview with the singer who performs it.
"Yatra says the amazing Miranda, hand-picked him to join the film's soundtrack after listening to his song Adiós, which was nominated for a Latin Grammy." Is there any aspect of the film LMM wasn't involved with? He picked the genre, the setting, the characters, the singers, the story... He has exerted more influence on this film than even directors do. It's so weird.

Here are some spoiler-free tidbits I found interesting from the 'The Art of' book.

• The film is set in the 1900s.
• The portrait of the man on the cover of 'The Art of' book is not Pedro but Agustin from an earlier version of the story set in 1950s. In that version, Agustin was a patriarch who found the Encanto where he built a magical home.
• In an early version of the story, the protagonist was a young woman from present times who received a magical doorknob that transported her to an unexpected world.
• At one point, Casita was an extension of Abuela and not a character with its own personality.
• At one point, Camilo was going to be an angry teen instead of the jokester he is now.
• At one point, Pepa's power was to be indestructible and she had a daredevil side to her.
• At one point, Isabela had a dorky suitor that came from the city named Bubo.

Agreed. Some songs were better than others, but they were all quite mediocre and unmemorable. And yes, Moana's soundtrack was better even though that's not a very high bar to begin with.

I tried listening to the soundtrack but turned it off. Guess watching the movie is how I’ll first experience hearing the songs in full. Because what I heard was extremely bland and unimpressive.

Normally a new Disney musical receives quite a few listening sessions as soon as the soundtrack is out.
