Omg, a reply!! :o

Thanks so much!!! :D :)

About the colors, I feel that they should really be somewhere in the middle of the old and the new. I definitely like the pastel look of the new colors, and I could believe that's the feeling they wanted to give viewers in the original release (pastels definitely would go along with the romantic aspect), but I don't believe they had any intention for Belle to be a redhead or for you to see Beast before Belle does. I personally feel they went a bit too far with the brightness.

I'm not too invested in this though. But I can empathize, because if it had happened to Mermaid, I know I would be angry (though that one did have some problems with the yellows and greens in its Platinum release, I thought it seemed mostly well-done color-wise--though the clean-up could've been more consistent).

THE COLORS:

They already confirmed that when they transferred the movie from the computers to film, that it looked darker on film than what they had seen (and intended) on the computers.

So for the IMAX release, they changed the colors to be brighter as they intended, to make the film match how it looked to them on their brighter computer screens.

So they did change it, but how it looks now is more what they wanted it to look like all those years ago when they first created it.

Today i saw the diamond edition of beauty and the beast, but I' m not that pleased with the colours. Obviously they toned down the brightness, but they put an orange shade over it. All the village-people in the opening scene look like they have been in the sun for hours, haha. The platinum colours looked sweeter, maybe even better imo. I have recently sold my VHS so checking the original colours won' t go anymore, otherwise i would have done it. But i can say for sure that the colours on that didnt look so dark as all the clips shown here, it didn't look pastel but it wasn't as shadowrich as a lot of u guys think. The colours were also quite clear(and the scene in the garden bears almost the Same colours). Well maybe someone has an old VHS and can watch the colours, im quite curious. But till then, the platinum wasn't that bad.

wait, isnt the argument about orange/red tinting usually the exact opposite?

I found some concept art from the movie. Anyone else who think there is something familiar with it?:

well the platnum edition has lighter colours, but the diamond is more red/orange in my opinion....so i think i like the platinum better because the colours in the new one seem a bit to hard(like they used picassa and clicked on the button to warm the colours a bit up :P)...and i noticed that watching the platinum was more relaxing for my eyes(both dvd so it wasn't due to the medium)

btw: has anyone noticed that, when belle is in her room for the first time and mrs pott enters, that when belle opens the door, suddenly the brightness changes. like someone pushed a button on the computer :P. it could be just me, but it really happened...

O and about that concept art for the swing, great job finding it...couldn't remember this particular artpiece, but it proves once again that disney recycles some material that they don't use....unfortunatly it didn't make it into rapunzel as well..

Well, they're obviously similar, both wanted a Rococo feel for their movies. BatB wanted the same feel, but originally, Rapunzel was to be pretty much identical to that painting. But yes, it is a little eerie.

The VHS clips on the internet are darker, yes. When I watch the BATB VHS, I'm always surprised at how much detail is visible, even in the darker parts.

I noticed that too; I attributed it to the fact that up until Mrs. Potts enters the rooms, Belle is really down and depressed, but the moment that Mrs. Potts steps in and the armoire starts to talk to her, the mood lightens up a bit. Maybe they wanted to represent that idea visually, but it wasn't executed as subtle as it could have been.

well the colours are brighter in a flash, and since i can't remember it from the platinum edition(because those things really catch my eye, but then again maybe the platinum was to bright to see it), i propose disney made a nasty mistake here....

@ rodis: ok then i was right about the VHS and the clips on the internet are to dark(so don't compare them :P people)
thanks for checking ......

Even the handdrawn movies is able to come closer to such paintings now when they seem to have full control over the colors.

By the way, this is the place where I found the image, and where there are even more concept art from both Beauty and the Beast and other movies, in case there are some who has not seen them yet:

i have the 2-disc dvd, since it was released earlier in the netherlands, but there aren't that much extra's on it...
its more a collection of some new extra's(alternative opening and deleted scenes, making off i believe, music video of jordan sparks) and old extra's from the platinum dvd(not all, just a few)...concept art and galleries etc are not on this new edition

It was released only now in the US? Damn Disney to treat 80% of consumers (dvd buyers) like shit!

Anyway, the bonus features on the dvd are very good! On Disc 2:

- 'Untold stories': Making-off Beauty and the Beast. 50 minutes documentary.

- 'The story behind the story': 25 minute piece about the original origins of some famous Disney Classics

- Featurette on composing the music for the film with Alan Menken and Don Hahn (20 minutes)

- Deleted scene: Alternate opening. 25 minutes of storyboard reel and original dialogue, showing a totally different opening of the movie (before Disney decided to make it a musical)

- Deleted scene: Belle in the library (20 minutes)

- Deleted scene: storyboard version and original recording of Ashman & Menken for 'Human Again'

- Alternate version of 'Be our guest' with Maurice instead of Belle and different lyrics

- Camera test: computer test of the ballroom scène

- Alternate score: original musical score for the transformation scène at the end of the movie; later altered for the final version

- Early animation: watch several scènes in rough and cleaned-up pencil animation

- Trailers (2) and tv spots (4)

- 'Broadway Beginnings': 20 minutes fluff piece about the Broadway musical based on the film

- Music video in which a Disney Channel tween-star rapes the song 'Beauty and the Beast'

And I'm sure there's more, that I have forgotten about.

Yeah, it stops being funny when you use it in two threads in a row.

Picky, picky, picky. Apparently, almost no one's ever satisfied with the colors. :x

These bonus features are almost exactly the same as the ones I have on my deluxe edition of B&B. Yet another reason why I don't need to buy this dvd.

Your remark about the Disney channel tween-star is spot-on Goliath! It's excruciating to hear and watch these music videos. Could Disney not at least choose someone with a more mature singing voice? Probably the kids like it???? :?
