Wow- I have to say I'm surprised at how successful it's been. You'd think it was the '90s! I must confess that "It's Like That" has grown on me to the point that I now really like it (though I still expect more from her). It looks like most of The Emancipation of Mimi is now available on Rhapsody, so I'll have to check it out on there soon.

MARIAH CAREY'S 16th #1 HIT, "WE BELONG TOGETHER"!!

Post by MutantEnemy »

Mariah Nets 16th Hot 100 No. 1 (Billboard Daily Music News)

With the 2-1 ascension of "We Belong Together" in the song's eighth week on Billboard's Hot 100, Mariah Carey notches her 16th No. 1 on the singles chart. In addition, the track, which is also the Hot 100's greatest airplay gainer, moves 2-1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart to become her ninth chart topper there.

As Fred Bronson reports in this week's "Chart Beat" column, Carey has not been on top of the Hot 100 since 2000 with "Thank God I Found You." The last time she landed there with a purely solo track (with no other featured artists) was in 1998 with "My All."

Carey's move to No. 1 comes as Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" drops to No. 2 after four weeks on top. But Stefani's not done yet, as "Hollaback" remains in the catbird seat on Billboard's Pop 100 chart for a fifth week.

---------------------------------------------------------

Together Alone (Chart Beat)

From Aug. 4,1990, the week she hit No. 1 for the first time on Billboard's Hot 100 (with "Vision of Love"), Mariah Carey occupied the chart's summit for at least one week every year through 2000, when she spent the week of Feb. 19 in pole position with "Thank God I Found You."

Carey hasn't visited the zenith since -- until now. More than five years after "Thank God I Found You," Carey earns her 16th No. 1 with "We Belong Together" (Island). This new chart-topper keeps Carey in third place among all artists with the most No. 1s in the rock era, but inches her ever closer to matching and surpassing Elvis Presley's second-place total of 17 No. 1 hits. The Beatles remain in first place with 20.

"We Belong Together" is Carey's first No. 1 on the Hot 100 without any featured artists in seven years and one week, since "My All" topped the chart the week of May 23, 1998.

A 2-1 rise on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart is good enough to make "We Belong Together" Carey's ninth No. 1 on this survey, and her first since "Loverboy" led the list for two weeks in August 2001.

Carey was supported on "Loverboy" by Da Brat and Ludacris. "We Belong Together" is Carey's first No.1 without any guest artists since "Always Be My Baby" captured the top spot in May 1996.

Yeah, I just had to call and give you guys a congratulatory message for the sweet 16! And, it’s really... This is, this is our number one record. I can’t even know what to say, seriously.

This is amazing and I know how hard you guys worked and how much, you know, time and effort and energy and stuff you put into this moment and I just want to share it with you `cause this is our moment and I have to tell you that I thank you so much from the bottom of my heart, to the depths of my soul!

Seriously this is an awesome day, this is amazing, and you guys should be so proud of yourselves and I’m so grateful to you and grateful to God for this moment. So, listen we gotta be "livin’ it up" right now, because this is, this is seriously an historic moment and I’m just glad, I’m just glad that I’m sharing it with all of you, for real, this is our moment, and I love you, appreciate you and enjoy you much. Okay? Thank you, thank you, thank you! And I’ll talk to you soon, yay! Bye bye!

It’s okay, don’t think this is not a festive message, it’s just that I don’t have my typical cohorts partners in crimes here to leave a message with me, plus they had a nice party for me last night, a surprise party, and I woke up to do "Good Morning America" today, so I’m a little sleepy, little sleepy, but I had to call and just give you love and give you thanks as always, I love you so much. Bye bye!

I've gotta say that, with the exception of a line here and there, "We Belong Together" has won me over and it's almost like we're back in the 90s again! This is her best performance since "My All." From what I've heard so far, it seems like The Emancipation of Mimi is her best album since Butterfly (one of my lesser favorites), but not as good as her albums from '96 and back.

Wow, I'm so happy for her! To think, if it wasn't for Destiny's Child's Bootylicious, she would have had 17 #1's right now. I don't know if anyone remembered this, but it's rumored that Tomy Motola released the commerical single of Bootylicious the same week as Mariah's Loverboy in order to block Mariah from another numbers one. Mariah leapt 62-2 and Bootylicious went from like 7-1, so in this case, airplay won out.

For awhile, I thought that maybe Christina Aguilera was the artist to challenge Mariah in terms of number one hits, and she still probably can. She has four currently, and just barely missed with Beautiful and the love ballad she had for her debut CD, forgot the name. Anyway, she's been pretty low-key lately, so I guess it's a no-go. There's also Ashanti, but her star seems to have faded as well. Britney has never had more than one number one hit, and that was with "Hit Me Baby One More Time..."

The formula that Mariah and Christina use to get their tracks to high positions is simple: Release the song to radio and hope it catches in on, then, during the week they think it peaks at airplay, release a whole bunch of single for like $75 cents. It's a controversial technique, one that has faded out since no one buys singles anymore, but it works(ed).

Wow- that surprises me. So with Mariah being #3 all-time with 16 number ones, what other artists are near her but still behind? Any artists still on the charts today?

what is so great about that list is that the only person who could possibly get another #1 today is janet, and even that would be a miracle!

On April 15, 2008, Mariah Carey will release her highly anticipated new album E=MC^2 , which follows in the giant footsteps of it's predecessor The Emancipation of Mimi. This release comes little more than three years after TEOM was first released.

It's lead single "Touch My Body" has made a huge impact on radio and it currently #4 on the Hot 100 airplay chart and #15 overall. The song was released March 24 as a digital download and a remix featuring Rick Ross & The-Dream and is expected to be released tomorrow.

Download and request "Touch My Body" to help it reach #1 on next weeks Hot 100, if it reaches the pole position it will make Mariah second only to the Beatles in #1 hits. Below is cover art and track listing confirmed by Island Def Jam Records and a press release for the album:

With over 160 million albums sold worldwide, Mariah Carey is the most successful female recording artist in history. This year, Mariah returns to the marketplace with E=MC², the follow up to the 10 million selling #1 album, The Emancipation of Mimi.

'Touch My Body' is the deliciously daring first single from the upcoming album release, which has already set records for its massive reception at radio across the Top 40, R&B, R&B/Adult, and Rhythm/Crossover formats. The video for 'Touch My Body', directed by feature filmmaker, Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, X-Men), premiered globally on network and cable television, along with online outlets.

Mariah Carey is now positioned as the only active recording artist in the 48 years of the Hot 100 with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits, and has already tied Elvis Presley's record setting 17 #1s.

Executive Produced by Mariah Carey and Antonio "L.A." Reid, E=MC² will include offerings by hit-makers Jermaine Dupri, DJ Toomp, Stargate, will.i.am, Bryan Michael Cox, Nate 'Danjahandz' Hills and James Poyser.

The E=MC² album release will be supported by major television appearances/performances, specialty programming at BET/MTV/VH1, specialty online programming, and a superstar advertising campaign including television, radio, online, outdoor and print outlets.

-Mariah Closing In On Record For No. 1 Hits-

Mariah Carey is on track to collect her 18th No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart next week.

"Touch My Body," the first single from her upcoming album, dipped one place to No. 15 on the latest survey. But the fresh availability of a digital download should send the song hurtling to the top next week.

That will push Carey to second place among artists with the most No. 1s in the rock era. The record is held by the Beatles with 20; Carey is currently tied with Elvis Presley.

Carey's album, "E=MC2," the follow-up to her 2005 Grammy-winning smash "The Emancipation of Mimi," arrives April 15 via Island Def Jam.

Asked recently by Billboard if she ever thinks about surpassing the Beatles' record, Carey admitted with a laugh, "I do, because people bring it up. But it's not like I sit around thinking about that type of stuff while I'm creating something. I did write this record in terms of wanting it to be a lot of songs that could potentially be singles, because people like that."

"I think it would be phenomenal," Island Def Jam Music Group chairman Antonio "L.A." Reid says of the prospect. "But the real goal is to create music the whole world can sing. And if we break records and set some milestones while doing that, that would be beautiful."

Note: The final Billboard position for "Touch My Body" will be published on Wednesday.

Yay! "Touch my body" is Mariah's 18th number 1 single. If she makes it past 20 she'll beat the Beatles and hold the title as the only artist to have the most hit singles in billboard history. If anybody ever doubted Mariah or dismissed her after Glitter then they can think again, 'cause she's proved all you haters wrong.

I knew she would do it. At first I wasn't too fond of this song, but it grew on me quickly. I'm really happy for Mariah, I'm sure she'll get #19 before she's done with this album.
