I didn't know the original "Shooting Star" was fully recorded with an orchestra; I thought only the demo and the pop version by Boyzone existed. Why didn't they release it as a bonus track or something? They wouldn't even have to spend any money on recording it since it's already done. ~exasperated sigh~
For the film Hercules, his song Shooting Star was recorded with a full orchestra but they decided it wasn’t active enough so Menken quickly wrote a replacement, Go the Distance.

Menken and Zippel had written a song called “Shooting Star.” “It’s a very sweet song and it’s very much a heartfelt ‘I wish I knew where I belong’ [song],” Menken tells Playbill. The team went as far as recording the full track with Hercules’ singing voice Roger Bart and the full orchestra before replacing it. The song felt too wistful, with not enough drive. It felt inspired by Candide—Menken’s original concept for the sonic palette of the movie before switching to gospel. And so the duo wrote “Go the Distance.”

Disney's really bad when it comes to this movie. Hunchback at least was fully decked out with features in the laserdisc edition, but Hercules never got a proper laserdisc, DVD, or Blu-Ray release. Shooting Star and I Can't Believe My Heart could both easily be included along any other deleted songs, but they never are.

I can't believe they haven't released it, when it was recorded. I wish we could listen to it. Maybe if Hercules gets a Legacy Collection release one day, it could be added as a bonus.

Disney has uploaded the entire D23 panel to Youtube! I hope they keep doing that with other panels:

^ I'm curious about the German translation, since he sang his own name more than once (meaning "Hercules" was in the song lyrics).

Don't ask me why but he sings of himself in a third person. It's only in the song though, no other references to that throughout the movie.

It is indeed. I haven't seen any explanation for it. It was probably for creative reasons I would assume?
As a kid, it never really bothered me. It still doesn't to be honest. But I agree that it's a weird decision. And I'm aware of people critisizing this choise - which I get.

I wasn't trying to offend by saying it was weird-- not a bad weird, just different. I watch the movies in English, so I really never think about how they are translated, but I do like watching their multi language song videos; I usually don't understand but a little Spanish in those, so hearing Herc sing his name was like, wow, a word I know, but it's his name...!

I never noticed until you just mentioned it, and I watched Hercules in German a couple of weeks ago.
It just doesn't seem weird when you watch it. Seems weird now though...

I only bought the Blu-ray to complete my collection and plus it's one of my favorite films. Unfortunately, Disney has never cared about giving it a good release. I hate that it never got one of those amazing 2-disc Collector's Edition releases for The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Tarzan all got that were stacked with bonus feature. Of course Tarzan did much better than Hercules, but those other two did equal to less than Hercules. I mean, I understand they weren't going to do anything for Hunchback because they were ashamed of it being too "adult," but what was the thought process with Hercules versus TENG or Atlantis?? Pocahontas and Mulan both ended up with decent 2-disc releases later (although not as good as those Collector’s Editions), but Hercules never even got that.

I'd have hope for a better release now since the Hercules property is seeing a mini-resurgence / newfound popularity if it wasn't too late for physical media... Everything's going digital and they're not going to do anything extensive for any film now.

I'm sure I must have read what you wrote back in April, but I just thought of something: Tarzan, Dinosaur, TENG, & Atlantis were new; I wonder if they got the jam-packed releases because either a) they were just the newest Disney animated entries, so Disney figured they'd sell great?, and/or b) since DVD existed when those films came out, they had time before the home video releases to put together lots of bonus material. Whereas Hercules debuted only on VHS. It would have been nice if later down the road they would've put more effort into a Hercules release (among many other films)...

That was excellent- thank you for posting it! Muses doll prototypes: I wonder why they never came out?! I think I had heard (but had forgotten) about using Susan's audition and having to take the noises out of it to use in the film. But that's crazy! The Phil maquette!!! At 53:46, the "reenactment" with Susan & Lillias recording "I Won't Say," Meg sings "No way, Bombay"-- cut line! Whoa! I love "Shooting Star"- it's super pretty. I'm so glad that we have "Go the Distance," but I like both.
