Ah, that's great. I hope you enjoy the series. Tell us what you think after you watch the first disc!

I've still only got Season 3 on DVD, but that's mainly because I've got the other seasons on my computer (.avi files). Also, I'm hoping that once Season 6 concludes in May (it's their last season ), Warner will release a "Complete Series" boxset with a couple boxset-exclusive bonus discs (just as they did for "The OC" when that series finished).

Borders also has The O.C. and Smallville. How are they? I've been interested in them, but they've been getting mixed reviews, especially The O.C.

"Smallville" is probably the only "Superman" series I don't like, mainly because Tom Welling is a horrible actor, and if you have a bad "Clark", you better have a great "everyone else". And unfortunately, everyone else is only good, not great. None of them stand out enough as worth watching to make up for Welling's lack of talent (not even vets like John Glover, Annette O'Toole, or John Schneider). First season stories suffered from "Krytonite-Infected Human-Turned-Monster of the Week" syndrome which is what kept me from tuning in regularly for the subsequent seasons. And they had now idea how to write for Whitney Fordman (Eric Johnson), which is sad because he could have provided a "normal person" parallel to Clark without having to be a serious enemy (like Lex was), even though he started as such. At least they gave him a good exit (enlisting in the Marines, followed by a really bad episode where a shapeshifting girl pretends to be him and returns to Smallville, is discovered by Clark and killed, then we learn that the real Whitney was killed in action as well.). Ultimately, it's one of those shows where you wonder how the hell it got popular at all because the actors aren't that great (despite some being very nice to look at) and the stories are okay but not really enjoyable unless you are truly invested in them, especially if you want the story to help you overlook the actors.

The O.C. was great in its first season (even Mischa Barton was tolerable), but the later seasons were steps down in quality. A few episodes in the fourth season are slightly better. If you want to get into it, do so for Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson (Seth and Summer). They were the two best things about the show.

Thanks for the reply, Albert!

I think I may get the first season of The O.C. because I'm a fan of Adam and Rachel.

I've never seen (or been interested in) "Smallville", but "The O.C." is AWESOME- I've even watching it right now. It's so addictive, I love it! It's similar to other teen dramas, like "Beverly Hills, 90210", "Dawson's Creek", "One Tree Hill", etc. Teen dramas are some of my favorite non-Disney shows, so I like them all.

Good choice. Then skip the second and third seasons entirely and pick up the fourth. ;)

Same here, though there are several teen shows that I've never seen the appeal of (for example, "Friday Night Lights", a football show with plenty of teen drama, is not exactly as good as people say it is.).

One of the BEST teen dramas ever was "My So-Called Life". It only lasted a season, and starred Claire Danes as one of the most realistic teenagers ever portrayed in television: Angela Chase. The first DVD was extremely rare (going for as much s $200 online) and many fans were so glad when SHOUT! Factory released a new edition last year with a lot of really great extras.

I think I meant that I like all the shows I listed...I haven't seen a bunch of teen dramas, including the two you listed...I mean, I *may* have seen MSCL back in the day, but I wouldn't remember.

I mean, there are other teen dramas I like that I didn't list that I can't think of off the top of my head...

I, too, love teen dramas.

I'm interested in these, but haven't seen an episode:

Beverly Hills, 90210
Greek
Veronica Mars
Joan of Arcadia
Everwood
Teen Angel
Supernatural

Have either of you seen any of these, and can comment on them?

Ah, I thought you meant that in general you like all teen dramas!

Still, I wholeheartedly recommend "My So-Called Life". :thumb:

"Beverly Hills, 90210" - If you've got SoapNet in your cable package, you can check out 90210 (the original, not that crappy new version on CW!). It's in the third season now on SoapNet I believe (I vaguely remember watching the Mexico episode sometime last week, and that was the end of Season 2).

The first few seasons are...well, basic. High school drama and some family stuff. It's not until the later seasons that it gets to the good soapy stuff, which is why I always preferred the later seasons to the earlier ones. Plus, the yummy Vanessa Marcil was Gina Kincaid during the last 3 seasons. :D The middle seasons are the transition between cliched high school drama and cliched young adult drama, and I usually have a love-hate relationship with it. There were some good stories (I miss the days of Steve and Clare), and Valerie was definitely an interesting character.

"Greek" - I tried watching an episode and it wasn't too good. I don't see why ABC Family chose to keep this on but ended "Wildfire". Now THAT show was good. It was about a teenage girl who after a stint in juvie is ordered to work at Raintree Farm, where she eventually becomes a jockey for the titular horse (Wildfire). It's got a nice mix of multi-generational stories, and the classic rival families (The Ritters and the Davises, the Ritteres owned/managed Raintree). I'm hoping for seasons three and four to come out on DVD (only the first two are on DVD), so I can buy all of them at once (I'm kicking myself for always delaying getting the first season, as it was $14.99 at Wal-Mart for like six months, a couple years ago).

"Veronica Mars" - it's Kristen Bell. That's one reason to get it. It's an engaging detective series that isn't afraid to be dramatic when necessary and funny nearly all the time. That's another reason to get it. It's Kristen Bell. That's a repetitive-but-totally-worth-it reason to get it. The first season is the best, while the third was the weakest. The second suffered from, IMO, being darker than it should have been.

"Joan of Arcadia" - the best show in the world according to netty. I watched it faithfully during its first season, but never had a chance to catch up on its second (that's what DVDs are for, silly Scaps!). This is one show where you can easily blindbuy it and not be disappointed.

"Everwood" - a bit pretentious in its first season, but the characters loosen up a bit (although some get even more high-horse). Damn the CW for dumping this and picking up "7th Heaven" for Season 139. They used to show it on ABC Family, but not anymore (dammit!). Luckily, the first season is pretty easy to find for $20 or less, and the second season will FINALLY come to DVD sometime in 2009 (though with music changes, but that's a sacrifice that I'm willing to overlook in "Everwood").

"Teen Angel" - I've never seen it, though I did see the 1997 sitcom of the same name. I actually don't think I've ever known about this drama until now, though according to wiki it was part of the Mickey Mouse Club (??).

"Supernatural" - it's a show that I'd like to get back into watching regularly, but I simply don't have the time. It's about two brothers who go around chasing supernatural spirits and demons, and with a rather cool vintage car. It's got a unique look too, with really washed-out colors that make the atmosphere seem more eerie than it should. Catch a few episodes on CW before you decide to blindbuy the seasons on DVD.

A few other teen dramas I wholeheartedly recommend:

"Boston Public" - it's not on DVD, but you can catch it on the cable channel TVOne.

"Freaks and Geeks" - it's on DVD and totally worth it. I have yet to pick it up, though I did get Judd Apatow's follow-up show "Undeclared" (which is more college comedy than teen drama, so it's not listed, but still recommended)

"Jack and Bobby" - my favorite new show of the 2004-2005 season, and sadly WB canceled it. If you can watch any episodes of it online, do it.

"Party of Five" - the first three seasons are on DVD, and they are probably the best.

"Point Pleasant" - a supernatural drama that was canceled way before its time. The 13-episode run is on DVD.

Don't listen to Escapay concerning Greek.
Greek takes really off after the first 3-4 episodes and gets really funny and yes a little soapy, but not too much. It is a fun show that has a lot of heart and the whole sorority/fraternity setting makes it more fun than it might seem in the beginning.
It's less soapy than other teenage dramas (so far no pregnancies, deaths or freak accidents), but loads of fun.

I really like "Beverly Hills, 90210", but I actualy prefer the earlier seasons to the later seasons- I like the high school drama more than the adult soap-opera-y drama (but I do like soaps sometimes).

I used to watch "Freaks and Geeks" when it was on- it's more like a dramedy, though, because it's not a straight-up drama like others that we've listed- it's got some comedy, too, sort-of.

"Party of Five" is also a great show. I haven't actualy watched it in a while, but I got into it a few years ago.

PeterPanFan, Supernatural is a GREAT show. If you have a Costco or BJs nearby, they are selling seasons 1 and 2 for $19.99 each and season 3 is $37.99. Season 3 just came out so that's why it's more expensive. But keep in mind that the MSRP is $59.98 for each season, so it's really a bargain!

Anyway, I went out today and came home with:

Image

Forgetting Sarah Marshall: 3 Disc Collector's Edition $21.84 at Wal Mart.

Image
The Best Of The New Scooby Doo Movies: $18.99 at Costco. Since it's $69.99 at FYE, you can bet when I saw it for this cheap I freaked out and picked it up faster that you can say "SCORE!"

The Nude Bomb

I was bummed at Best Buy the freebies only came in Blu and a bunch of old people where buying IM that way. I'm starting to feel out of date but I still don't REALLY want Blu to take over darn it! But, hey more Maxwell Smart, with Iron Man in the same day is very good and then to add in one the best comedies in years (Richard Roper think so too anyway) as well? It's frickin' amazing! Plus I had the nice surprise that Sarah Marshall Digital Copy is supported by iTunes. AWESOME! :D

I know, I was so happy about that too. I used to use Handbrake to convert movies but that takes too long and the quality isn't that good sometimes. I was so happy when I found out the Digital Copies on my Sex and the City: The Movie and Forgetting Sarah Marshall DVDs could work with iTunes!

A great score on the Scooby-Doo Movies, DisneyFreak5282

That is probably the reason I haven't bought that set yet.

Some planned replacement DVDs today

from Target

Asterix The Gaul
Asterix and Cleopatra
The Twelve Tasks of Asterix

These DVDs will replace the Pan and Scan versions that were released a few years ago
