i love this film and they did a great job with the pic and sound.
i'm not a big fan of the DisneyE. Sound i'd prefer THX but oh well....

I'm pretty sure that most of the platinum releases include the original trailers for the movie. I have ripped trailers from Aladdin, Bambi, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and Snow White. I haven't yet checked Lady and the Tramp, but I think The Lion King is the only one (weirdly) with no trailers on it.

Thanks a TON for those, Escapay and Josh! So that each of your efforts didn't totally go to waste, I viewed the first half of links from Escapay's post and the second half from Josh's. Here's what I think:

The Little Mermaid Restoration: Wow! The footage I saw at the Disney Store was excellent, but went by so quickly that I couldn't examine the restoration closely like I can with these caps. What stands out to me the most is how clearly you can see Ariel's eyes, even the glistening in them. I can't wait to view this on my widescreen display.

Peter Pan: Maybe it's just me, but those few screencaps looked smoother and brighter than my DVD. I dunno if Disney actually used Lowry footage for that or if I'm just seeing things. It'd be easier to tell with shots that weren't so background artwork-oriented. That pic of Peter from the DVD booklet is definitely new, so I think it's from the cover art (which I expect will be revealed in the next couple of weeks). From the looks of it, it seems very nice and on-model, but we won't know for sure till we see the whole thing.

Tinker Bell: I feel embarrassed to say this. REALLY embarrassed....I think that animation looks pretty. No, I'm not looking forward to this movie. No, I'm not expecting a quality script. Yes, I know that this is a shameless commercial for Disney's Fairies merchandise. That said, that trailer looks kind of sweet and is aesthetically pleasing.

Cinderella III: Okay, I'm sort of torn on this. First the bad: the majority of the animation looks about Cinderella II quality, maybe a hair better. The guards and background people look exactly like they came from that sequel. The Prince and Fairy Godmother both look awful. I can understand the Prince, but there's no real excuse for the Godmother since she wasn't drawn as realistically as the Prince in the original. Now the good: The backgrounds seem to be channeling Mary Blair way more than II did. The trees in particular seem lifted from the original. Now the really good: I'm very impressed by Cinderella herself. I don't know how they did it, but she's actually on-model. I wouldn't go as far as to say perfectly on-model, but pretty dang close enough to satisfy me. Way to go, DisneyToon artists!

The Little Mermaid III: I think people are being a little too harsh on this. I feel it's definitely above Return to the Sea level. It's not as flat and sterile as that film. It's not as impressive as Lilo & Stitch and Brother Bear's sequels, but remember that those films had their original counterparts released within the past 5 years. It's harder to replicate animation from 17 years previous. Besides, I actually think the background fish almost look feature film quality. Only the ones in the foreground look DTVish (I think it's mainly the shading). Ariel and Sebastian look solid enough for me, though I agree that Flounder looks off.

Lighthouse Mike, thanks very much :D

I think I'm gonna have to get a job at a DVD retailer... :P

Anyways, very surprising news about Pan, eh? I certainly wouldn't have thought it'd be released so early, but it does make obviously "tie-in" sense for Tink's movie. Btw, the 3D for Tink actually looks pretty good IMO; way above that of Mickey's X-mas, or Core's The Wild.

I'm glad it'll only be another year for Jungle Book, as it's one of my favourite Disney classics. And as goofystitch mentioned, I'm also surprised Pinocchio hasn't been re-released yet.. sigh...

So my predictions are:

March '08: Pinocchio
October '08: 101 Dalmatians (mroe franchising opts)
March '09: Fantasia (w/ Fantasia 2000 as an accompanying SE during the same time frame, because they were never very popular movies, truth be told)

And, Sleeping Beauty will never get a real Platinum, because it doesn't need one.

Now my challenge is who can guess when Disney'll announce their next "Platinum" line? And how is it going to differentiate between the PEs, which were intended to be the top-of-the-line collector versions (although it didn't quite turn out that way). I really can't forsee Blu-Ray or HD-DVD settling their format war for at least another year or two...

Anyways, for those 101 lovers, just keep in mind that time really does fly. It feels like just yesterday that I first came to this site and ran out to start collecting the Disney DVDs (beginning with TLK). Ah, memories... :)

Hehe, you're welcome.

Anyways, turning this thread slightly to some shameless plugging, but I took the Robin Hood screencaps, and compared them to my GC DVD.

I really really hope that the footage in the trailer is NOT the actual footage we'll see on the MWE. Otherwise Disney are blatant liars when it comes to "digitally remastering" for their "lesser" films.

SB could do with a re-release for us who don't have it yet, though. :P

My guess is after the 10/13/14 platinums, they'll start a new line but essentially re-cycle the Platinum titles in that line. Something like "Snow White: Animation Legacy Collection" followed by "Beauty and the Beast: Animation Legacy Collection"

Plus, there are two other reasons why it deserves a Platinum re-release:

1. It could really use a comprehensive documentary running between 35 - 50 minutes. That's the only flaw the current SE has despite being an excellent package: its retrospective featurettes are rather shallow. If Disney's too lazy for that, then the least they could do is edit the audio commentary interviews (which were actually outtakes from the featurettes) into a long documentary. Then at least Sleeping Beauty would be commentary-less like the other 50s films (depending on what Peter Pan will do with the SE commentary for the Platinum release).

2. Disney can have a big fall merchandising campaign for it. Not as big as Cinderella or The Little Mermaid, of course, but big enough to get noticed. They could capitalize on the fact that it's a princess movie, and one that really doesn't have much merchandise to itself, which would make the stuff released more special. Then in 2010 and 2011, Disney can have fall merchandising campaigns for Snow White and Beauty and the Beast, which they didn't do for those titles originally.

Wow! Thanks so much for posting!

I'm so happy that we get Peter Pan: PE next year! I'm looking forward to it...but not as much as The Little Mermaid! I'm also excited to see the trailers for The Little Mermaid III and Tinkerbell. This is going to be the greatest Platinum Edition DVD so far!

While I don't like the idea of changing the commentary into a documentary, I think Disney might go that route since commentaries aren't always someone's favorite bonus feature, and they'd usually prefer some kind of visual reference to go along with what people are talking about.

It would be interesting, though, to see them tackle another "Inside Walt's Story Meetings" for Sleeping Beauty, since it, like Bambi, was a more visual film than a story film. But I fear that the IWSM was a one-time thing, likely their first attempt at a different type of commentary, and it probably didn't get as much praise as they would have wanted it to.

Thanks for that! I love the way it's promoted, and the voice over guy makes it sound so...revered, despite a lot of people not liking the film (I love it).

The video was somewhat choppy for me, what program did you use to rip it?

Is it wrong that out of all those trailers, the one that excited me most is Cinderella III? :p
