I think why "YCSTB" feels long is because it's a more or less continuous track on the CD, whereas in the movie (and to a lesser extent, the stage show), it's interspersed with dialogue / action scenes, which sort of slow the momentum.
The Von Tussels do lose a verse:
"Ever since we first saw the sun
It's us Von Tussel girls are always
Tryin' to please someone
But now we're gonna shake and shimmy it
And have some fun
Today!"
Well, the Von Tussels lose the verse, but the verse itself is still there with some lyric changes, like I said, where "It seems Von Tussel girls are always trying to please someone" becomes "a man and woman liked to shake it when the day is done". The characters themselves lose singing the verse, but for the most part, it's still there, so it's not like the run time of the song would be any shorter.
"Ta ta ta taaaa! Look at me... I'm a snowman! I'm gonna go stand on someone's lawn if I don't get something to do around here pretty soon!"
I saw the movie last night and overall I was pretty impressed. I have not seen the stage version, and I went into the theater with very little knowledge of the storyline or music. I felt there were a few flaws in the film, but overall I think it was really great. I really enjoyed seeing Michelle Pfeiffer back on the big screen again. It's been a while since we've seen her, and I thought she was really great in her role. The story and the music were both fantastic - good enough to make "Hairspray" one of my new favorite musicals. I'll have to pick up the soundtrack.
I saw it on Monday and it has been the best movie I have seen this year. The songs were great and the casting was great, too. I'm going back to see it soon.
I saw this tonight, and I really liked it! It gave me a very " " expression. I don't know exactly what did it, but it worked!
The cast was perfect! Everybody was great and fit their roles to a T. Also, the sets and cotumes were perfect and they accomplished the feeling they wanted perfectly.
My favorite character just had to be Christopher Walken's. Everyone was great, but you can't really beat him!
It may be too early to talk about this but does anyone else see this as an Oscar contender? I wasn't too sure at first, but now with the movie out and getting incredible good buzz, it doesn't seem too farfetched. I mean come on, if Chicago can win Best Picture, Hairspray, a far superior movie, has a decent shot.
I think they have a good chance at Supporting Actress (Queen Latifah), Costume, Art Direction, Makeup and Original Song (Come So Far, Got So Far to Go and maybe Ladies Choice and The New Girl). Longshots include Actor (John Travolta), Actress (Nikki Blonsky), Director (Adam Shankman), Cinematography and Best Picture.

Well, that's arguable about "Hairspray" being better, but either way, "Chicago" is a drama, whereas "Hairspray" is a comedy, and the academy pretty much hates comedies being in any big categories. So I don't see it getting best picture. Maybe a nomination. MAYBE. It will have a better shot at some of the technical categories, I'm sure.

Zac Efron will be on "The View" on Thursday. Man, they've really given promotion their A game on this film. It seems like the whole cast has been on every talk show. I know that Travolta, Latifa, and Bynes have already been on "The View".
Oprah had Travolta, Latifa, Pfeiffer, Kelley, Blonsky, and Efron on. The late-night shows have had Travolta, Latifa, Blonsky, and Walken. Only Snow and Marsden seem to be missing out.
I should think a holiday season release...I think Marc Shaiman said something about them prepping a two-disc version that would include Tracy's deleted song "I Can Wait".

I would imagine holiday season, unless it picks up some Oscar/ Golden Globe nominations, then it might be right on time for that in early January or February.

The usual waiting period for most movies to be released on DVD is 4 months from the theatrical release. So with that I predict around the end of November or beginning of December.
I hope we hear something soon. The DVD better be loaded with extras!!!
and i want to see how travolta changes to that incredibly sweet Edna,
i liked these characters bettes than the original ones, their nicer and do much sweeter, i just loved Tracy, Edna, Penny, and Latifa's character,

.....great villianess!!!
I agree with you so much!
I just saw the original Hairspray on abc family the other night, and i found it pretty dull.
It didnt take a long enough time to establish the characters, and you dont end up feeling for tracy at all!
Also Divine is a much worse actress then i thought she would be
