I don't think that's a good comparison. The songs I mentioned above were released by respectable artists, not Disney's bubble-gum tween stars. And I think those songs mean so much to people because they're very strong both musically and lyrically. 'I See The Light' was neither --imo.
Ok, good point. Then what if it was released on the radio as a duet between two currently popular respectable artists? I don't particularly think "I See the Light" is the greatest song either musically and especially lyrically but I also don't think that its perceived quality or lack of quality if it was released on the radio is that predictable either. Tangled has become a rather popular movie and songs in popular movies tend to become radio hits.
I've been following Disney animated features and its reviews since B&tB came out, and as many of mentioned, the reviews always state that the songs are not as good, memorable, etc as the ones in the animated feature before it.
Semaj wrote:Plus, if I'm not mistaken, didn't Pinocchio have a couple "modern" references too? Pleasure Island alludes to a certain Robert Louis Stevenson novel, and the name "Lampwick" was a modern variation of the character's original name, "Candlewick".
Pleasure Island is actually a play on the 1939 San Francisco World Fair, which had a section called Treasure Island (obviously itself probably named after the famous novel). A lot of Pleasure Island naturally also contains things that would associate with a post-industrial world, but then again, the original book was only around sixty years old when Disney tackled it, and far from feeling like ancient yarns like how even Grimms' or Andersen's stories (written in the early 19th century) may have been.
And a few mild pop culture references shouldn't date a film. There are many more factors in what does and doesn't date a film, and even a film that remains a relic of a certain time period can be entertaining without having to put anything into context.
I'm going to see Narnia 3 now, that's a Disney film too, right?
Hopefully they'll show the Tangled trailer in front of it! (though ive already seen tangled xD)
You're right, it was Fox. How weird that it changed.
Anyways, they showed a lot of trailers, but that was before the lights went down and everybody was getting in and they just showed small clips without audio... Megamind, Little Fockers, Love and other drugs and You will meet a tall dark stranger, i believe. And when the lights went down they showed the trailer for Tron Legacy, which is premiering in a week or so. (I also saw that trailer before tangled.)
So unfortunately no Tangled... but something that excited me, a HUGE cardboard stand of tangled with Maximus, Flynn and Rapunzel. Flynn had an arrogant face and held his ugly wanted poster and pointed to it (no poses that we havent seen btw), Rapunzel had her normal pose with her 'brave face' and another wanted poster was put against the tree and the head was cut out, so you could go stand behind it and make a photo xD I didn't do that because
1. everyone would look at me like i was insane.
2. i didn't bring a camera.
About Narnia; i liked the effects, the beginning was a little boring but after that it was spectacular.
good film, a must see, seven out of ten
I love this movie, I wathed it for the second time yesterday, and I loved it even more. Partially cause I was one of the few in the theatre at the time ! (No annoying kids)

And how Kurt is a GUY makes it funnier.
I will upload it to youtube xD
I lowered her voice too (with the Healing Incantation), and you're absolutely right! She sounds just like Kurt, LOL! I wonder how you're video turns out!

Well, I FINALLY saw Tangled and I liked it! While it might take a while for me to accept it as a FANTASTIC film there is a lot to like about it.
First is the character of Rapunzel. Simply put, I love her. To me, she has Snow White's innocence, Ariel's tenacity and curiosity and some of Belle's spunk. She is innocent without being completely clueless, despite being a captive for 18 years in the tower. She is tenacious but isn't a brat about it. You can see in her actions that she understands the consequences, a result of Mother Gothel's manipulation, to the point of tears. Finally, she could defend herself, and it felt believable.
Flynn Rider is a far more likable character than I expected him to be. Despite me seeing a lot of the story beforehand, I was still surprised by him. He is basically the lovable loser, though with a far bigger degree of success than most characters of this type. He is very smart and talented, but there is some inferiority issues in him that make him very identifiable, to me at least. I really loved the chemistry between him and Rapunzel. It goes down the "I hate you/love you" path common in romantic comedies, but in here it is subtle, with there being a clear fascination between each other but some degree of doubt.
Mother Gothel is a great villain, but her motivations are rather shallow. Which is a shame because the way she displays herself nearly rivals the likes of Facilier (and I mean a BIG nearly). I feel that half of her theatrics are wasted on rather shallow ideas. What I enjoyed the most about her is that for a while, I DID believe there was love between her and Rapunzel. This could be that she was such an expert manipulator that their loved appeared to be convincing. I mean, it was so effective I kinda wanted Gothel to be genuinely affected by her daughter's rebellious nature, even with her desire to be young and beautiful.
I LOVED the sidekicks in this movie, perhaps much more so than in Princess and the Frogs. Pascal didn't do much but I thought he was adorable. Maximus I admit bothered me for a bit, but he grew on me by the end of the movie. I don't like how the movie dives into the trope of "all animals are dogs" as Maximus behaved like a dog (funny enough, in Dreamworks's dragons, Toothless acts like a cat...). I am a tad disappointed by how underused the pub thugs were. Their scenes were great and it annoyed me how the writers didn't find more ways to include them. But I guess that meant adding more to the story and dragging it down.
Rapunzel's parents did have a lot of emotion in their scenes, I admit, but I wish they talked more. Jim Hill compared them to the king and queen in Sleeping Beauty, but in that movie the queen has at least ONE line. In Tangled they have nothing, which is a shame.
The musical numbers I loved. Yes, I had listened to the soundtrack before watching the movie, so I knew what to expect. But I still enjoyed it immensely when watching the final film. "I See the Light" is my favorite of them all...
Speaking of which, the lanterns scene IS the "it" scene of the movie. There's a great build up to it and it doesn't disappoint. It is hyped as a wonderful event in the story and it truly is. To me, THIS is how modern Disney magic looks like. I think this is where Tangled has a bit of an advantage over Princess and the Frog. That movie had a lot of great scenes, but none of them stood out as big as the lanterns scene. That scene defines the whole movie, the character of Rapunzel, the climax of Rapunzel's relationship with Flynn and so many other wonderful things. Princess and the Frog lacked that scenes, to me at least.
The visuals are amazing. They surpass everything Disney has done so far in CG. There is a beauty to this world that sets it apart from even Pixar's work. It truly does feel like a fairy tale book come to life. The character animation is great, even if some of the design choices are odd. The characters are so fluid and their expressions are great.
Overall, really enjoyed this movie, may see it again just to experience it one more time.
Not sure if this has already been discussed, and I apologize if it has, but had anyone heard of this "Easter Egg" in Tangled previously? Walt Disney Animation Studios posted this message on Facebook today:
"See if you can spot Pinocchio in the Snuggly Duckling--he can be seen as Shorty swings around like a cupid!"
Just wondering if anyone knew about this or had seen it themselves, as I didn't notice Pinocchio in the scene. I've only seen the movie once, so maybe some of you that went multiple times were able to catch it?

Either way, it's pretty neat!
I haven't seen it (I never was able to catch it,) but I've heard about it. I also heard someone talking about seeing Pumba during that scene too. I wasn't able to find that one either...
I finally saw Tangled today (almost a month after it was released in theatres ). The theatre we saw it in surprisingly packed.
I thought the movie was pretty good, though I would not rank it in my top ten favorite Disney films. All the characters were decent, the animation was great and the songs were just fine (though, again, not Disney's best).
These were the previews that played before Tangled:
=Will see it = Will rent = Will avoid at all costs
Kung Fu Panda 2
Rio =
Cars 2
Gnomeo and Juliet
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never

That's a great use of the emotes to average what movie you'll see or avoid
